“The Godfather of Gore” Lucio Fulci worked across all genres, but it’s his horror output that’s most remembered thanks to his knack for visceral violence, gore, and unconventional storytelling. All of these are on prominent display in his Lovecraftian “Gates of Hell” trilogy that began with 1980’s City of the Living Dead. While its atmosphere and gross-out gore gags are the standout reasons to watch, City of the Living Dead also happens to make for a stellar Halloween hidden gem.
The premise is simple: a priest commits suicide in a Dunwich village cemetery and unwittingly opens the gate to Hell. The death is observed in visions by a medium, Mary Woodhouse (Catriona MacColl), as she’s conducting a séance in her New York apartment. Mary’s so overwhelmed by fear of the imminent evil encroaching that she collapses and is presumed dead, only to be rescued from her...

Scooter McCrae is a name that will always catch my attention, because he and his feature directorial debut Shatter Dead seemed to be getting a lot of coverage in the pages of Fangoria magazine back in the early ’90s. He made his second feature, Sixteen Tongues, in 1999 – and now, more than twenty years later, Deadline reports that he has finally gotten a third feature through production. The latest Scooter McCrae film is a “darkly erotic sci-fi” project called Black Eyed Susan, starring Damian Maffei of The Strangers: Prey at Night.
Deadline notes that Black Eyed Susan was one of the first projects to secure a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement when the strike got started. Shot on 16mm film, it centers on Derek, who after finding himself desperate for work, accepts a job replacing his recently-deceased friend at a tech startup. ‘Black Eyed Susan’ – ‘Shatter Dead’ Filmmaker Scooter McCrae Returns With Bdsm Sex Doll Horror Movie
The director of cult films Shatter Dead (1994) and Sixteen Tongues (1999), Shooter McCrae has wrapped production on his third feature film, titled Black Eyed Susan.
The film is currently in post-production, Bloody Disgusting has learned.
“The stylishly spare, lo-fi aesthetic erotic science fiction feature was filmed on Super 16 in Brooklyn and other areas of Upstate New York. Its cast includes Damian Maffei, Marc Romeo, and ex-WWE Superstar Scott Fowler. Model Yvonne Emilie Thälker marks her feature film debut as the picture’s titular character.”
Desperate for work, Derek (Maffei) accepts a job replacing his recently-deceased friend at a tech startup. Continuing to develop the company’s innovative project means working intimately with Susan (Thälker), a bleeding-edge Bdsm sex doll meant to receive and appreciate punishment as an integral part of her evolving AI.

How do Lucio Fulci fans catalogue their favorites? By number of atrocious set pieces? Or by simply weighing the entrails and moving from there? Fulci’s career is by no means limited to his gruesome peak in the late ’70s and early ’80s, but it’s sure difficult to find many who hold his ’60s spy knockoffs and westerns in as high regard as violent stoners do the likes of Zombie, The New York Ripper, and City of the Living Dead (also known as The Gates of Hell). While there’s no denying the effectiveness of the cheapjack surrealism underpinning The Beyond, most of his other gore touchstones are notable only for the extreme lengths they’re willing to go, not how far they’re capable of burrowing beyond viewers’ gag reflexes.

Since launching in 2020, Cauldron Films has quickly established itself as a boutique label to watch for cult film fans. In addition to unearthing and restoring obscurities like The Crimes of the Black Cat, American Rickshaw, and Frankenstein ’80, they’ve secured a few heavy hitters. Their most recognizable title to date is Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (originally released in the US as The Gates of Hell). Following an exclusive slipcase edition last year, a standard retail version of the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray set is available this week.
The 1980 Italian horror film is significant for kicking off Fulci’s thematically connected Gates of Hell trilogy, followed by The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery the next year. Developed in the wake of Fulci’s success with Zombie in 1979, City of the Living Dead features more undead ghouls but this time as accoutrements rather than a centerpiece.

While Italian genre cinema generated its fair share of classics throughout the ’70s and ’80s, filmmakers during that period were also quick to exploit successful trends. Lax copyright protections gave way to Italian rip-offs of such hits as The Exorcist, Jaws, Dawn of the Dead, Alien, The Evil Dead, and Mad Max, to name a few.
Not even Italy’s own productions were safe from imitation, as the cannibal subgenre proved. While 1972’s Man from Deep River is often cited as the originator, the international notoriety of Cannibal Holocaust ushered in the cannibal boom in 1980. Man from Deep River director Umberto Lenzi helmed another one of the subgenre’s highlights, Cannibal Ferox (originally released in the US as Make Them Die Slowly), in 1981.

Yesterday we shared the news of the three-disc special edition 4K release Severin Films is planning for the 1981 film Nightmare, a.k.a. Nightmares in a Damaged Brain. Now we have another awesome Severin Films release to let you know about, as they will be giving legendary director Lucio Fulci‘s 1977 film The Psychic a four-disc special edition 4K release!
Described as Fulci’s “ultimate giallo masterpiece”, The Psychic was scripted by Fulci, Roberto Gianviti, and Dardano Sacchetti, and is also known as Seven Notes in Black or Murder to the Tune of the Seven Black Notes. Apparently Quentin Tarantino entertained the idea of remaking the film with Bridget Fonda in the lead role back in the ’90s. Fulci’s film stars Jennifer O’Neill (Scanners) as a woman tormented by violent visions of past slayings. Or are they premonitions of murders still to come?

Forty-one years after director Lucio Fulci‘s film The Beyond (watch it Here) was released and embraced as a classic by many horror fans, a new version of the movie is now about to make its way out to theatres across the United States. This new version of The Beyond is called The Composer’s Cut because it features a brand new score composed by Fabio Frizzi – who also composed the movie’s original score.
Starring Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Sarah Keller, Antoine Saint-John, and Veronica Lazar, The Beyond shows what happens when a young woman inherits an old hotel only to find it sits atop a gateway to Hell and all manner of creatures lurk in the darkness.
The film is the second entry in Fulci’s “Gates of Hell” trilogy, which began with City of the Living Dead and ended with The House by the Cemetery.

Italian maestro Fabio Frizzi has composed more than 100 scores over the course of his 50+ year career, including features, shorts, and television, but he’s most well known for his work with Italian horror legend Lucio Fulci. The Italian maestro will be joined by his Frizzi 2 Fulci band for a live concert of his chilling compositions, followed by the award ceremony and a special screening of Zombie.
Frizzi is best known for his work with Lucio Fulci on the likes of Zombie, The Beyond, and City of the Living Dead. He also composed the scores for such cult classics as Pieces, Devil Fish, and Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, while Quentin Tarantino featured his music in Kill Bill: Vol. 1.
Fulci passed away in 1996, but his legacy lives on in part through Frizzi, who has been paying tribute to his friend and frequent collaborator since debuting Frizzi 2 Fulci in 2013. This event marks Frizzi’s third time performing at the Coolidge.

When film fans hear the name of Italian director Lucio Fulci, it almost inevitably brings to mind his oft-quoted moniker as the “Godfather of Gore,” thanks to the films made towards the end of his career that caused so much trouble with the British film censors; Zombie Flesh Eaters (1980), The Beyond (1981) New York Ripper (1983) being some of the most notorious. To view him as such however is to miss out on what was an extraordinarily prolific career which also included musicals, comedies, westerns, historical dramas, fantasy films, science fiction and thrillers. This new Blu-ray and digital release of The Psychic, out now in a 2K restoration from Shameless Films, is an opportunity to reassess one of his less well known films, which is only now being released in the UK for the first time.

Cineploit records have announced their two latest releases for 2020; Lawa “The Parallax View“ (Cine 23) and Pan/Scan “Kosmonauter” (Cine 24).
It’s particularly good to have Lawa back. On “The Parallax View” (not related to the 1970s conspiracy movie classic), they take a ride through French and Italian cinema score of the 70s and 80s from the works of Michel Colombier, Michel Legrand and Jacques Revaux to Alessandro Alessandroni, Daniele Patucchi, Nico Catanese, G & M de Angelis and the master of them all, Ennio Morricone. There are also some original compositions and concepts from Lawa which fit seamlessly into the impressive playlist. Once again they are honouring the world of film music in their idiosyncratic, very personal way. In his directional debut Tate Steinsiek has some big shoes to fill. Steinsiek known for his work in special effects in films such as Face Off, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich is making his film debut with the horror classic Castle Freak. The film Castle Freak came from the minds of horror legend Stuart Gordan and Dennis Paoli back in 1995. One of the producers of the film is Barbara Crampton who appeared in the original film as Susan Reilly. But have no fear horror fans, Crampton has been a regular in the genre for decades, and her work with director Stuart Gordon is well documented. The film was written by Kathy Charles The Kings of Maine. With a musical score composed by Fabio Frizzi , The Beyond and Kill Bill). After she’s permanently blinded in a tragic car accident, Rebecca’s receives some bizarre news: her long-lost-mother has recently passed away,...

Part of our on-going series Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Forever on the edge of one's seat, giallo is the provider of all the glamorous and hallucinatory emotions. The film genre and its musical sister is somewhat a crown jewel when it comes to detailed niches, sub-genres, and die hard fans. Original LP records from the giallo genre can cost a hefty sum and the blossoming vinyl reissuing industry (an exciting addition over recent decades) proves how enduring the genre and its sub-genres are. This giallo bonanza comes in just shy of two hours and you will find both influential and cherished moments and secluded moments on the sidelines. That, for me, showcases its textures and ultimately what a fun, trippy genre it is. The work of the masters is in full swing, beloved composers such as Bruno Nicolai, Nora Orlandi, Riz Ortolani, and Goblin all have turns. And of course, the...

It’s virtually impossible to separate the ‘80s horror output of renowned Italian director Lucio Fulci from the amazing, distinctive music of Fabio Frizzi. Much like the long association between Fulci’s compatriot Dario Argento and prog-rock band Goblin, Frizzi’s scores for classics like The Beyond, Zombie (a.k.a. Fabio Frizzi Announces the “Beyond Composers Cut Tour” Frizzi 2 Fulci: (Press Release) Fabio Frizzi is returning to North America to perfom the legendary score for “The Beyond.” “The Beyond” is a psychedelic, supernatural nightmare directed by the granddaddy of Italian splatter Lucio Fulci. The second film in Fulci’s "Gates of Hell" trilogy sandwiched between City of the Living Dead (1980) and The House by the Cemetery (1981), “The Beyond’s” loose narrative revolves around a Louisiana hotel which may in fact be one of the seven gates to hell. The movie is beloved by horror fans for its surrealistic imagery and gore-tastic set pieces, including gouged out eyes, face-eating spiders, reanimated corpses, and a bloodthirsty dog. Additionally, a composer’s cut of the score is being re-release in conjunction with the tour via Cadabra Records.

Fangoria and Full Moon are producing a remake of the classic 1995 horror film Castle Freak. This movie is considered a cult classic that centered on a horrific creature lurking within the shadows of a castle.
The original film was produced Charles Band, who hired Re-Animator director Stuart Gordon to helm it. Band had a poster created for the film project that didn’t even have a script and told Gordon he could do whatever he wanted with it as long as it had a castle and a freak in the story.
So, Gordon ended up turning it into a loose horror film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story The Outsider and he cast Re-Animator stars Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton to star in it.

A reboot of the now almost three decade-old Puppet Master franchise – a series which totals a mammoth 12 films at last count – The Littlest Reich will undoubtedly pique the interest of those outside of the original fanbase due to the pedigree of writing talent attached. It’s from the mind of one S. Craig Zahler, responsible for the double whammy of Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Bone Tomahawk (both if which he helmed and wrote). Zahler’s particular brand of witty wordplay, jet black humour and wincingly Ott gore is evident throughout The Littlest Reich. The film has been shepherded to the screen by the production arm of the recently resurrected Fangora brand, and like Blumhouse, there’s been real care here to ensure that horror aficionados haven’t been short-changed by an empty cash-grab exercise.

Following its well-received screening at the 2018 Overlook Film Festival, Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich (written by Bone Tomahawk director S. Craig Zahler) was acquired for North American distribution by Rlje Films. It's been playing the festival circuit and will be getting a Us theatrical and VOD release on August 17th. Having seen the movie at Fantasia, I can say that this movie has some of the most insane and bloody kills ever put on screen, and if you want to see some of that for yourself ahead of August 17th, take a look at the newly released red band trailer:

As if the lineup for Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 wasn't impressive enough, the festival has added two films to its slate: David Barker's Pimped (touted as an erotic thriller with a touch of Hitchcock and Brian De Palma appeal) and screenings of the restoration of John Carpenter's classic Halloween! The guest lineup includes Barbara Crampton, Leigh Whannell, Shaked Berenson (Tales of Halloween), Issa López (Tigers are not Afraid), composer Fabio Frizzi, and many more!
Press Release: Two extra films have been added to the record-breaking 2018 line-up: Pimped is director David Barker’s modern transgressive erotic thriller, an Hitchcocktail of elevated suspense and shock in the revered style of Brian De Palma, And If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s Halloween on the big screen, now’s your best chance. The inclusion of this 4K restoration needs no explanation in anticipation of a new Michael Myers slasher being released in October.
