Began in films in 1940. Joined 20th Century Fox from 1941 to 1947, notably as orchestrator/musical director. Worked on many classic films, including Stormy Weather (1943), Laura (1944) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). As composer scored mostly B-grade features. Worked in television, 1956-1965.
Emil,according to his nephew, Randy Newman, once conducted a feature soundtrack at the 20th Century Fox sound stage in his bathrobe, after his Malibu house had burned down - along with all his clothes.
