The Story: A New York cop is unwillingly recruited as an assassin for a top-secret government agency, Cure. Re-christened Remo Williams (Fred Ward), he’s sent on the trail of an unscrupulous weapons dealer, but first must survive his training with Chiun (Joel Grey) master of Sinanju.
The Players: Starring: Fred Ward, Joel Grey, Kate Mulgrew & Wilford Brimley. Music by Craig Safan. Directed by Guy Hamilton.
The History: The Adventure Begins…and ends, with this, the lone big-screen adventure of Remo Williams, the veteran of well over a hundred pulp novels (published as “The Destroyer” series – written by Warren Murphy & Richard Sapir). This was an attempt by Dick Clark (of all people) and the then-fledgling Orion Pictures to launch their own James Bond-style series of adventures. While people may laugh at the attempt now, they definitely had reason to think this could work, with the brain trust at Orion the...

Of all of Hollywood’s attempts to cash in on the video game craze of the 1980s, The Last Starfighter trails only Tron as the decade’s most fondly nostalgized entry in the video game movie’s micro boom. Like Tron, Nick Castle’s film is a demonstration of then-new CGI technology, which means that inevitably its heavy reliance on wireframe animations and blocky, thickly pixelated objects has very much aged, though the fact that its visual effects are tethered to the game technology of the day further highlights it as a relic of its era. Perhaps the one area in which it’s ahead of its time is in its conceit of an arcade game being used as a military recruiting tool.
At the center of The Last Starfighter is a teenager named Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), who lives in a trailer park at the dusty outskirts of his hometown.

"You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier." Hollywood screenwriter Gary Whitta has revealed a special pitch trailer "sizzle reel" that they created for The Last Starfigher sequel already in development (tentatively) called The Last Starfighters. This trailer features concept art with a score and a tiny bit of dialogue from the original shown at the end. Whitta originally dropped some of the concept on Twitter back in 2018, so we've seen most of this stuff before, but there are a few new images added in this trailer. Plus it's just thrilling to see all the art (by Matt Allsopp) with the music (by Chris Tilton & Craig Safan). Whitta was developing this project with Jonathan Betuel, the same screenwriter on the original cult classic 1984 sci-fi film. The concept for this sequel is said to involve Alex returning again, but no exact plot details have ever been revealed.

“Greetings, Starfighter. You have been recruited by the Star League to defend the frontier against Xur and the Ko-Dan armada.”
For those of you who remember seeing director Nick Castle’s sci-fi gem in theaters during the summer of 1984, those words are ingrained in your memory!
The Last Startfighter tells the story Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), an arcade game whizz-kid whose wildest dreams comes true when he finds himself enlisted to fight in an interstellar war. The movie also starred Dan O’Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart and the great Robert Preston as “Centauri”. It’s still a fun, great film to watch!
Now screenwriter Gary Whitta has revealed the sizzle reel for The Last Starfighters, the sequel which fans have long been waiting for.

While it may be hard to believe that less than a decade ago Nightmares was one of The most sought after, most-requested titles for re-release, after watching this 80s anthology it’s easy to see why. Very much part of the 70s and early 80s portmenteau film vogue, which gave us the likes of Trilogy of Terror, Creepshow and its sequel, The Twilght Zone and Cats Eye, Nightmares features four stories that riff on pre-existing themes:
Terror in Topanga is a take on the “killer is in the house” trope; whilst The Bishop of Battle plays on the perils of obsession and the early-80s belief that video games were “evil”. The Benediction is a quasi-religious version of Richard Matheson...

It's that wonderfully eerie time of year and Mondo is getting into the Halloween spirit! They recently revealed a few collectibles for A Nightmare on Elm Street, which is one of the greatest horror franchises of all time. These films are a blast to watch and I always enjoy watching one or two of them during this time of year.
They have released a vinyl box set featuring all of the soundtracks from all of the films in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. That box set comes with seven pieces of art for the films that were created by artist Mike Saputo. There are also two prints created by the same artist that have gone up for sale for A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Nightmare Elm Street 2.
You can find all of the information below that was released for the vinyl set and the two prints.

Many great horror icons are accompanied by scores that are just as haunting (and perhaps just as recognizable) as the characters they accompany, and that's especially true with the eerie, dreamlike sounds of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Containing the scores for the first seven films in the franchise that Freddy built, Mondo and Death Waltz's newly revealed Box of Souls 8-vinyl set includes chilling tracks remastered by James Plotkin, killer new artwork by Mike Saputo, and a 12-page booklet with reflections on the franchise from composers and cast members. You may never sleep again after listening to it...

It's a TV movie graduated to feature status, with four imagination-challenged tales of terror. The script has lots of variety -- a video game possessed by the devil, a truck possessed by the devil, and lastly, a rat possessed by the devil! Making all of your nightmares come true … Varèse Sarabande will be releasing A Nightmare On Elm Street 8-cd box set (limited 2000 units) on October 16, 2015.
This deluxe package contains all 8 soundtracks from the original series, over 8 hours of music including almost 3 hours of bonus tracks. New artwork has been commissioned for the set (by artist Shawn Conn, http://atomicdeadguy.com/), and configuring the sleeves together forms a larger piece of art. Before you have any nightmares, please don’t worry … the original Matthew Joseph Peak creations are included in the packaging.
The set comes complete with the trademark knitted Freddy sweater encasing the outer box.
The world was introduced to Wes Craven’s Freddy Krueger (portrayed by Robert Englund) in 1984 with A Nightmare On Elm Street. Krueger was a former child killer seeking revenge against the parents who burned him by haunting the dreams of their teenage children and killing them in their dreams.

Nick wades into another stack of DVD releases, including 80s action epic Remo: Unarmed And Dangerous, and lots more besides...
"Whatever happened to Fred Ward?" is a line surely on the tip of most people’s tongues. Apparently, the star of Tremors and The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult has mostly been doing TV work over the last few years, though you’ll almost certainly remember him as the charismatic star of 1985’s Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins. No? Well, shame on you, because Remo, making a welcome Blu-Ray debut, leads this month’s action-packed, erm, action special.
If you weren’t one of the lucky few that grew up with the preposterous movie otherwise known as Remo: Unarmed And Dangerous punctuating their childhood, we’ll fill you in. Riding on the success of the Rambo films (essentially, the only tenuous link being the vaguely similar name), Bond director...

To mark the release of Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins on 7th July, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray.
First they faked his death and gave him a new identity. Now a top secret organisation is training a former New York cop to combat corrupt forces operating outside of the law. His mentor, Chiun, is an ageing Korean master of the martial arts who can run on water and dodge speeding bullets.
Born on the pages of Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir’s The Destroyer series of men’s adventure novels, Remo Williams was placed in the capable hands of Bond director Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger, The Man with the Golden Gun) for his big-screen outing. Fred Ward (Tremors) plays the trainee assassin, with Academy Award-winner Joel Grey (Cabaret) occupying the role of Chiun.

An 80s sci-fi epic that gave hope to videogame geeks everywhere, The Last Starfighter is still a lot of fun all these years later. Jeff takes a look back…
“The amusing thing about this? It's all a big mistake. That particular Starfighter game was supposed to be delivered to Vegas, not some fleaspeck trailer park in the middle of tumbleweeds and tarantulas. So it must be fate, destiny, blind chance, luck even, that brings us together. And as the poet said, the rest is history.”
1984’s The Last Starfighter might just well be the best embodiment of the wish-fulfillment fantasy for gamers everywhere. It validates the hours spent in front of video screens by rewarding one player in particular with high adventure, giant spaceships, cute girlfriends, and the opportunity to save the planet.
In this modern day Arthurian fable, Alex Rogan (Lance Guest, supposedly 17 or 18, but looking mid-20s) can...

A modest box office success in 1984, but has time faded The Last Starfighter’s lustre? Certainly not, argues Timon…

For many of us, the 80s is filled with a plethora of ‘classic childhood movies', films we watched countless times on rainy afternoons, quoted till our parents yelled at us and to this day, have a special place in our hearts and on our geeky t-shirts.
In fact, you can't talk to a 25 to 30-year-old about The Goonies, Ghostbusters, The Neverending Story and Flight Of The Navigator without having a nostalgia fest, but among all these films there is one that may not have been truly embraced by 80s film fans as much as it deserves to be: The Last Starfighter.
