He graduated from Ohio State University in 1950. He started out as a musician, playing drums with groups including the Radio City Music Hall orchestra.
He grew up in Coshocton, Ohio. His mother wrote book reviews and accompanied silent films on piano. His father was the son of a Lithuanian immigrant and ran a general store.
