(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we're kicking off Wick Week with a look back at one of the most exhilarating sequences in the entire franchise: the knife fight in "John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum.")
It's not happenstance that the "John Wick" movies have exploded in popularity since first arriving on the scene in 2014. Set entirely in New York City and incredibly thin in terms of actual plot, the small-scale original nonetheless is an action masterclass, plunging audiences into an entirely new world with its own unique rules. With each and every installment that's followed, the Keanu Reeves-starring franchise has upped the ante in terms of both scope and scale. Where the first mostly kept the action constrained to various set pieces of Wick taking on hordes of bad guys while armed with a single firearm,...

The “John Wick” movies are a series of American action thriller films that follow the story of the titular character, John Wick (played by Keanu Reeves). The first movie in the “John Wick” movie series, “John Wick,” was released in 2014 and was directed by Chad Stahelski. How many “John Wick” movies are there? The straight answer to the question is three, chapter 4 of the series is set to release next year.
The movie follows John Wick as he seeks revenge after the Russian mobsters kill his dog, given to him by his late wife. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over 88 million worldwide.
The second movie, “John Wick: Chapter 2,” was released in 2017 and picked up right where the first one left off. In the second movie, John Wick is forced to fulfill a debt to the Italian Mafia, which puts him in conflict with some of the world’s deadliest assassins.

How big has the “John Wick” film franchise become? Apparently too big for creator Derek Kolstad to remain involved. Screenwriter Kolstad created the John Wick character and universe and has solo writing credit on the first two Keanu Reeves-starring action movies, 2014’s “John Wick” and 2017’s “John Wick: Chapter 2.” While Kolstad cracked the story for 2019’s “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum,” he shared screenwriting credit with Shay Hatten, Chris Collins, and Marc Abrams. Now with the upcoming “John Wick 4” and “John Wick 5,” Kolstad is not involved whatsoever.
“At a certain stage the studio will tell you, your creation is graduated, and you wish it well,” Kolstad recently told Collider. “I’m still close with [director Chad Stahelski], still close with [first film co-director David Leitch], and I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m excited to see.”

John Wick is back, and this time he’s bringing a subtitle. Parabellum is both a type of gun and Latin for “Prepare for war”, both of which set the tone nicely for this thrilling third instalment in the sharp-suited action franchise.
The action picks up exactly where Chapter 2 left off, with former assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) now a fugitive with a $14 million bounty on his head after killing someone on the premises of the Continental Hotel, the haven for hit-people run by Winston (Ian McShane). After fighting off hordes of attackers, John manages to call in a favour with gangster-slash-ballet instructor The Director (Anjelica Houston), who grants him safe passage to Casablanca,...

There’s little original about John Wick the character or the film series, so the reason he is a smash success action hero is all due to Keanu Reeves’ performance. Derek Kolstad created the man in the black suit and his dog, overseeing the direction of the three films although the latest installment, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, required four screenwriters: Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins, and Marc Abrams. That’s never a good sign.
We pick up exactly ten minutes after John Wick Chapter 2, with our hero on the outs with the High Table. He’s on the run with a $14 million bounty on his head and few willing to associate with the “excommunicado” man. Wick is not without resources and manages to get out of New York, using his sole “Get out of Jail” free card.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is once again directed by Chad Stahelski, after co-directing the first instalment in 2014 and returned to the director’s chair solo on John Wick: Chapter 2. The latest John Wick instalment takes place momentarily after the previous chapter and finds the titular character on the run against any and all of New York City, including the continental itself. Chicago – I must admit that upon initial viewing, I didn’t care much for the original “John Wick” film. Coming as it did in the post “Taken” wave of old guy revenge thrillers, I found it to be stylish but supremely silly nonsense, since it was the death of puppy as the spark that lit the fuse. However as time has gone by, John Wick has grown on me.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
It was “John Wick: Chapter 2” that managed to do a deeper dive into the strange mythology of John Wick’s underground society of assassins … complete with their own code, their own currency, and their own boutique hotel (The Continental). That was the right move, because even in my initial review I recognized that this world building was interesting. fresh and the most promising element.

Beginning with what would be the climax of a standard action film, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum runs like a well-oiled machine, delivering exactly what you want in ways you didn’t know you wanted. Picking up mere moments after chapter two’s finale, there’s only a few minutes on the clock before John Wick (Keanu Reeves) becomes “excommunicado” with a $14 million price tag on his head, and all of the world’s assassins on his tail. Blood is on his hands after a verboten killing on the Continental Hotel grounds so he’s on the run, and his options are running short.
What follows in this first act is a balletic, radiant, and relentless feat of action filmmaking, captured with the kind of clear-eyed, pleasure-filled elegance reminiscent of Jacques Demy–just imagine a bit more gunplay, knife throwing, dog chomping, horse kicking, and samurai swordplay on motorcycles. It’s a total blast,...

Marc Abrams will be producing along with his Catapault 360 partner Michael Benson. “John writes from a real human place, and has already tapped into the relationship between young Anthony and his dad,” Abrams told Variety.com when Sayles’ confirmation was announced. HBO is picking up a new series based on the life of Anthony Kiedis and has hired "The Spiderwick Chronicles" writer John Sayles to handle the project. Set as a drama, it will be centered on the early life of the Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman in 1970s West Hollywood and Los Angeles.
Having "Scar Tissue" as its working title, the series chronicles the childhood of Kiedis who lived with his mother in Grand Rapids, Michigan before moving to L.A. to live with his father when he was eight.
Kiedis' father, known as Spider, was dealing drugs for living in Sunset Strips and allegedly was supplying rock stars such as The Who and Led Zeppelin. All the while, hoping to get into the show business.

HBO and Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis are developing a series based on the singer’s unconventional, rock 'n' roll childhood. Kiedis has partnered with Catapult 360 partners Marc Abrams and Michael Benson to create the series, tentatively titled Scar Tissue. Abrams and Benson are scouting for a writer to pen the script, which will center on Kiedis' relationship with his father, Spider, who sold drugs and mingled with rock stars on the Sunset Strip, all while aspiring to get into showbiz. The show will begin with young Kiedis moving from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to West Hollywood to live with his dad. But Kiedis' father, having been raised in a tyrannical household, decided to go to the other extreme. The show will also center on West Hollywood and Los Angeles in the early 1970s, including the rock stars encountered by Kiedis and his father (who, according to rumors, was...

HBO led all TV networks in attracting nominations in the 60th anniversary WGA Awards, fetching two noms for dramatic series writing and three for comedy series writing.
In the dramatic series category, HBO's The Sopranos and The Wire are joined by Showtime's Dexter, NBC's Friday Night Lights and AMC's Mad Men.
In the comedy series category, HBO attracted noms for Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage and Flight of the Conchords. Also nominated in the category are NBC's The Office and 30 Rock.
Conchords also attracted a nom in the category of new TV series, where it joins Mad Men, FX's Damages, ABC's Pushing Daisies and Comedy Central's The Sarah Silverman Program.
The WGA's recent news releases have dealt almost solely with its ongoing strike against some of the same companies figuring in the WGA Awards. The guild had planned to release its TV and radio noms today but released the information late Wednesday without previous notice.
"In order to maximize press coverage for the 2008 Writers Guild Awards as well as not compete with Golden Globes' nominees ... we made the decision to go out a day earlier than previously announced," WGA West spokesman Gregg Mitchell said.
Globe noms were released this morning.
The WGA Awards are set for Feb. 9, with simultaneous ceremonies planned at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles and the Hudson Theatre in New York.

"Zip" is back in contention at NBC.
NBC has handed out a cast-contingent pilot order to the Universal Media Studios/Reveille project, which was originally developed last season when it was picked up by the network as a pilot directed by Dan Attias and starring Rob Huebel.
Written by Mark Rizzo, Marc Abrams and Michael Benson, "Zip" revolves around "have nots" living in a ZIP code full of "haves."
NBC's previous regime passed on the pilot in May. When Reveille's Ben Silverman joined the network as co-chairman in June, he put the project back in development.
Rizzo, Abrams and Benson penned a new script, which is getting a cast-contingent green light. Richard Shepard is set to direct the new pilot, which is exec produced by Abrams and Benson. Rizzo is serving as supervising producer.
"Zip" is one of two Reveille/UMS comedy pilots at NBC, along with "Kath & Kim," which also is casting.

Ben Silverman, executive producer of ABC's hot prospect Ugly Betty, has teamed with ABC for another project, the single-camera comedy Parental Guidance. The network has given a put pilot commitment to the half-hour project, to be written by Marc Abrams and Michael Benson. Guidance, which will be executive produced by Silverman, Abrams and Benson, revolves around adult parents who live life not too differently from when they were 25 and explores how that affects their kids. Talks are under way with studios to come on board and produce the comedy with Silverman's Reveille. Guidance stems from a first-look deal Abrams and Benson recently inked with Reveille through their newly launched Catapult Llc. (HR 9/18).
