Like it started doing last year with Tracker, CBS is getting a head start on promoting its new fall series Poppa’s House by dropping teasers during March Madness that feature Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr.
Unlike last year’s spots touting the new Justin Hartley drama, however, the newest one acknowledges how early it is to be talking up the new sitcom. Fortunately, the Wayans are in on the joke.
“Long lead marketing!” quips Damon Wayans in the 15-second spot.
“We do have a sense of humor at CBS, so allowing our talent to acknowledge what the audience is seeing, is something we feel good about,” President and Chief Marketing Office Mike Benson tells Deadline. “We also think that the audience will appreciate the honesty. Let’s call it what it is … long lead marketing and have some fun with it. It’s not only good marketing, but it...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus did a lot of embarrassing things as Elaine over the many seasons of "Seinfeld," from a pilled-out Marlon Brando impression to the sultry voice of a sex phone operator, but none were quite as humiliating for the actor as that jerky little number in the final season. The legendary comedy series was filled with unforgettable moments up til the very end, and one of the most memorable things from the entire show — Elaine's iconic dance — doesn't occur until the season 8 episode "The Little Kicks," named after her ungainly movement. So why did a seasoned comedian like Louis-Dreyfus get so bashful, and where exactly did that dance come from anyway?
"She was very nervous about this because, as much of a trooper as she is to look foolish and being funny, she was a little worried about it being foolish and not being funny," explained "The Little Kicks" director...

CBS has ordered three new series from this year’s crop of pilots.
The network has handed series orders to Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; The Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth; and the Wayans family comedy, which now is known as Poppa’s House.
Related: 2023 CBS Pilots & Series Orders
The trio will air during the 2023-24 season and will be joined by Tracker, starring Justin Hartley, which formerly was known as The Never Game and was ordered to series in December.
CBS isn’t specifying episode orders, particularly given the current writers strike, but given that all three come from its own studio, the network can be flexible.
It comes after CBS made some space for new titles after axing East New York and True Lies on Tuesday, though it reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., instead bringing the drama back for a seventh and final season.

Lea Michele sat down with The New York Times ahead of her opening night on Broadway playing Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl” and confronted accusations of bullying made over the years by her former “Glee” cast members. Samantha Marie Ware came forward in 2020 to accuse Michele of making “traumatic microaggressions” against her on the set of the Fox musical comedy. Ware said Michele threatened to get her fired, among other forms of bullying. “Glee” star Heather Morris supported Ware, writing on Twitter that Michele “should be called out” given “the disrespect” with which she treated others “for as long as she did.”
“I knew from day one when I attempted to introduce myself. There was nothing gradual about it. As soon as she decided that she didn’t like me, it was very evident,” Ware told Variety in a 2020 interview. “It was after I did my first performance, that’s...

Bill Hader, uh, made his mark last year when he won the Directors Guild of America Award for comedy series for helming the “Barry” pilot “Chapter One: Make Your Mark.” He’s back in the running again and is the overwhelming favorite to defend his title, which would make him the ninth person to win this award twice.
Hader has a commanding lead in our predictions with 31/10 odds for the breakout Season 2 episode “ronny/lily.” The next closest is the series finale of “Veep,” by David Mandel, at 39/10, followed by three episodes of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”: “Marvelous Radio” by Daniel Palladino, “It’s the Sixties, Man!” by Dan Attias, and “It’s Comedy or Cabbage” by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
The former “Saturday Night Live” star would join a two-time winners club that includes Andy Ackerman (“Seinfeld”), Hy Averback (“M*A*S*H”), Paul Bogart (“All in the Family”), Beth McCarthy-Miller,...

Exclusive: Tony nominee Taylor Louderman (Mean Girls) is set as the female lead opposite Ken Jeong and Max Willems in CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot The Emperor of Malibu, from Crazy Rich Asians author Kevin Kwan and Warner Bros. TV.
In The Emperor of Malibu, written by Kwan and David Sangalli, directed by Andy Ackerman and showrun by Michelle Nader and Christina Lee, when Auggie (Willems), the son of a Chinese billionaire (Ken Jeong), announces his engagement to an American woman (Louderman), his outrageous family descends upon the couple to win their son back and test drive the American dream.
Louderman portrays Kate. Exclusive: ABC’s multi-camera/hybrid comedy pilot Nana, headlined and co-executive produced by Katey Sagal, is making a major casting change. Ben Lawson (Designated Survivor) has been tapped as the male lead opposite Sagal. He replaces Josh Cooke, who had been originally cast in the role.
The decision was made after the pilot’s table read late last week, which triggered a substantial reworking of the script. While Sagal as the title character was very well received, a number of other elements underwent changes, including the male lead character Alex getting reconceived. That led to the recasting.

The project also hails from writer Lon Zimmet, Ted Melfi and Kimberly Quinn’s Goldenlight Films, Alcon Entertainment, 20th Century Fox TV and ABC Studios.

Sought-after multi-camera episodic director Victor Gonzalez has made an exclusive development arrangement with Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Under the pact, Gonzalez via his Fortaleza Productions and Kapital’s Kaplan and Dana Honor will focus on content for the underserved Latino market, developing Latino-based multi-camera comedy series for broadcast, cable and streaming.
Gonzalez and Kaplan met more than five years ago when Gonzalez directed multiple episodes of two of Kaplan’s first series as a producer, Instant Mom and Wendell & Vinnie for Nick at Nite. Gonzalez has since helmed episodes of two other Kapital multi-camera series, CBS’ Friends with Better Lives and 9Jk.
After directing 5 episodes, about a third of the entire 9Jkl’s first-season order, this past season, Gonzalez is set to direct five episodes each of the initial 13-episode orders of Kapital’s two new multi-camera series for next season, The Neighborhood and Fam, both on CBS.

After CBS yesterday wrapped its round of early pickups of the series it considered no-brainers for renewal, it has started to shed the weakest of the rest. Monday comedy Living Biblically has been pulled from the schedule effective immediately. Starting next week, it will be replaced by repeats of The Big Bang Theory.
The move is not a surprise. Living Biblically is CBS’ least watched series this season and tied for last place in adults 18-49 (Live+same day). No “Bull,” CBS wants you to know that the freshman Michael Weatherly series is actually the No. 1 new show of the year in total viewers, over NBC’s lauded “This Is Us.”
“We congratulate them on their success, but we like winning,” CBS senior exec VP Kelly Kahl said. He also pointed out that even CBS’ “Blue Bloods” has a larger audience than any other drama on the other networks, except “This Is Us.”
“The Big Bang Theory” is the “Wayne Gretzky of comedy,” he noted, arguing that no other half-hour comes close in total viewers, which is why they’re big on spinoff entry “Young Sheldon.” The show was recently renewed for two more seasons, a negotiation that Moonves characterized as amicable.
He also said he “hoped” that the show will continue even beyond that. “We’ll do these two years and we’re not going to just lay down,...

Mr. Robinson isn’t a show for everyone, which is largely a function of the fact that Welcome Back, Kotter wasn’t for everyone, and owed a lot of the success it had to limited alternatives.
Don’t get me wrong, Welcome Back, Kotter was not only a great show, but it managed a surprising amount of influence on the landscape of television for decades… it just wasn’t for everyone.
Mr. Robinson stars Craig Robinson as a part-time substitute/part-time singer who runs into an old flame and hopes to rekindle things. When he learns that she now teaches at their old High School, he takes the first chance he gets to substitute there.
Mr. Robinson is laid-back almost to a fault… well, probably to a fault. He quickly hints that he wasn’t very serious about school, and hasn’t been very serious about anything since, but he...

Fox’s “cynical-but-hopeful” comedy Mulaney has been on an interesting journey since its early days as an NBC pilot — but creator/executive producer/star John Mulaney is confident in the show’s future, largely because of the strength of its cast.

“The biggest revelation to me [during this process] was seeing the strength of the ensemble,” Mulaney told reporters Sunday during the Television Critics Association summer press tour, noting that we’ll really see the cast come together in Episode 6. “This is a very potent weapon.

John Mulaney (pictured above center) has a pretty good strategy for his once-nbc and now Fox comedy, “Mulaney” – ”I just watched ‘Seinfeld’ and copied it,” the former “SNL” writer joked at Sunday's Television Critics Association panel. He added: ”They run it all the time. It was easy.” The easy comparison though, is not completely a joke. Mulaney is a clean-cut, suit-wearing comic a la Jerry Seinfeld. His observational material is not completely unlike Seinfeld's, and the multi-camera sitcom follows the protagonist curating a stand-up career, also like “Seinfeld.” Also read: Fox's Peter Rice: ‘American Idol’ Is ‘Aging Gracefully,’ But Contestants Are a Problem Plus,...

When Ryan Seacrest kicks off the upfronts by welcoming Pitbull to the stage with his entourage of booty-dancers, you know that Fox isn’t catering to your mom. (Unless your mom is one of Pitbull’s booty-dancers, in which case, lucky you!) So it’s no surprise that Kevin Reilly, Fox’s chairman of entertainment, followed Pitbull’s performance with the announcement that Fox is branding itself as “America’s Next Generation Network,” focusing on a youthful audience. That might also explain why Andy Samberg was there, making some decent quips for the benefit of his fellow Next Generation Americans — and a few self-aware advertisers,...
