Public funding for Ukrainian filmmakers has dried up.
Ukrainian producer Aleksandra Kostina of Bosonfilm, in Cannes with Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk’s Directors’ Fortnight title Pamfir, has made an impassioned plea for European support.
Public funding for Ukrainian filmmakers via the Ukrainian State Film Agency which backed Pamfir, as well as other organisations, has dried up as the Russian invasion continues.
“I would be very grateful if international funds would have some initiatives for Ukrainian filmmakers, however tiny, that we can apply for,” said Kostina.

Just when it felt like spirits might be flagging during this summer’s virtual edition of Polish Days—the industry program of the New Horizons Intl. Film Festival—the organizers turned to the unlikeliest of heroes: Wirginia Szmyt, better known by her stage name D.J. Wika, an 82-year-old icon of the Warsaw music scene, and the subject of director Agnieszka Zwiefka’s forthcoming documentary “Wika!”
D.J. Wika put on a rousing online set for the directors, producers, sales agents, and industry guests who might have otherwise been mixing on a dance floor in Wrocław, Poland, where New Horizons is typically held each July. But for anyone missing the energy of the buzzy summer fest, which because of the coronavirus pandemic has been postponed until the fall, “we tried our best to recreate it,” says New Horizons’ head of industry Weronika Czołnowska.

Kasia Adamik, Anna Kazejak and Dorota Kędzierzawska are among the directors who are to receive subsidies from the main funding body in Poland. The Polish Film Institute’s (Pisf’s) second funding session of 2020 was modest in comparison to the first one this year: only five projects – as against ten – will receive financial grants. A further two films, Biała odwaga by Marcin Koszałka and Kosmos by Michał Marczak, were moved to the next session. However, it’s not the quantity that drew the attention of industry experts and the media to the Pisf experts’ ruling. Of the five supported films, four will be helmed by female directors, which is unprecedented in both number and ratio. The Polish branch of the Women in Film organisation has been lobbying for gender parity and increased visibility for female artists for years, and finally it seems to have come to fruition. The only male.

Netflix has released the first trailer for a new series they’ve produced called 1983. The series is a polish spy thriller that follows “a group of rebels in search of the truth behind a deadly secret.”
This looks like it’s going to be a great and intense series. I’m a big fan of spy stories and this one has an interesting twist. The story is set in an alternate history where the Iron Curtain never fell. I like what I’m seeing in this trailer and I’ll definitely be checking this series out.
Here’s the full plot summary:
Following in the great tradition of Cold War spy thrillers, this alternative history series takes place in a world where the Iron Curtain never fell. Now, in 2002, twenty years after a devastating terrorist attack in 1982 that halted the course of Poland’s liberation and the subsequent downfall of the Soviet Union,...
