Back in 2019, the world saw the first season of The Morning Show, following the aftermath of the allegations of sexual misconduct behind a network broadcast morning news program. Since then it has become one of Apple TV’s trademark shows.
However, in the same year, a movie that is quite reminiscent of this series was released. Even though it received significantly less hype, it’s still worth a watch and our attention to the depicted events. Luckily, it’ll be added to Prime’s catalog tomorrow, on May 25.
The plot of this drama revolves around three ambitious women, who work at one of America's most powerful news networks, Fox News. While their broadcasts contain lots of provocative headlines, their names are about to become headlines themselves.
The point is that the women join efforts to expose the channel’s CEO, their professional “father” who made them famous, for sexual harassment...

For a biopic about Donald Trump, The Apprentice is surprisingly concerned with other things. The film has exactly what you might expect and somehow a curiosity around every corner, a familiar historical intrigue firmly planted in a tonal shock. The shock comes from its subtlety and perspective, the latter of which has a unique bent for a film about an ex-President debuting in an election year that spotlights his third campaign.
As you can imagine, there’s no shortage of American directors looking to cinematically take down Trump. But, for now, none of them get to. At least not as blatantly as Ali Abbasi, the international director who won the job to tell the story of the debased mogul from the early ’70s to the mid-80s.

He may be on trial for fraud in New York City, but Donald J. Trump has made his presence felt at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival.
The Iranian-born, Denmark-based film director Ali Abbasi debuted his newest movie “The Apprentice” in competition this week, and its number one critic is the former President of the United States and current Republican candidate for this year’s election. In “The Apprentice,” Sebastian Stan stars as the young Trump, with Emmy-winner and current Tony-nominee Jeremy Strong as his mentor, the notorious litigator Roy Cohn. (You can watch the successful Sundance-launched documentary “Where’s My Roy Cohn?” for more about this relationship.)
Following the film’s bow Trump’s legal representative Steven Cheung released a Trump-style statement: “We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers. This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked.

The Apprentice filmmaker Ali Abbasi was asked Tuesday at the film’s Cannes Film Festival press conference about Donald Trump’s legal threats against the movie following its world premiere here the night before.
“Everybody talks about him suing a lot of people, they don’t talk about his success rate [with those lawsuits],” the filmmaker told the press today.
Following the movie’s premiere, where it received an 11-minute standing ovation at the Grand Theatre Lumiere, Trump campaign advisor Steven Cheung back in the U.S. declared, “We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers.”
The movie follows the rise of a young 1980s Donald J. Trump, played by Marvel Studios movie icon Sebastian Stan, as a real estate baron and how he became inspired to wheel and deal from ruthless attorney Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong).

Even in Cannes, it’s hard to avoid Donald Trump.
“The Apprentice,” the story of the 45th and possibly 47th president’s early years as a real estate developer, earned a eight-minute standing ovation on Monday. It’s probably safe to assume that the film festival crowd isn’t a Maga-heavy one, so it helps that “The Apprentice” paints a blistering portrait, focusing on Trump’s relationship with Roy Cohn, the McCarthy-ite lawyer and fixer who took an interest in the “the Donald” before he was a household name.
Sebastian Stan (“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”) stars as Trump, Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) plays Cohn and Maria Bakalova (“Borat 2”) portrays Ivana Trump, the thrice-married president’s first spouse. Ali Abbasi, the Iranian-Danish filmmaker behind “Border” and “Holy Spider,” directs the movie from a script by Gabriel Sherman, a journalist who covered the Trump White House, as well as...

The Trumps were on the red carpet this evening at the Cannes Film Festival — sort of — as Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice world premiered in competition. The film was greeted with an 11-minute post-screening ovation at the Grand Theatre Lumiere.
Sebastian Stan, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominee known for his work in the MCU and the Hulu miniseries Pam & Tommy, here plays a young Donald Trump with Oscar nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat 2) as Trump’s first wife, Ivana. Emmy and Golden Globe winner Jeremy Strong also stars as infamous attorney Roy Cohn, and Martin Donovan is playing Fred Trump.
Stan and Bakalova attended the red-carpet premiere. Strong was not in attendance as we understand he stayed in New York where he is starring on Broadway in An Enemy of the People.
Abbasi in remarks after the film said he wanted to embrace the politics of now in cinema with so much unrest in the world.
“In the time of turmoil, there’s this tendency to look inwards, to bury your head deep in the sand … and hope for the best, hope for the storm to get away,” he said. “But you know, the storm is not going away, the storm is coming, actually. The worst times are to come.”

There was lots of hugs going around among Abbasi, Stan and Bakalova as the lights went up on the two-hour film. Cate Blanchett, Cynthia Erivo and Oliver Stone were among the crowd applauding afterward. Stone, who has made his share of political films, even offered a spot review.

An exploration of power and ambition, and set in a world of corruption and deceit, The Apprentice examines Trump’s efforts to build his real estate business in New York in the 1970s and 80s, also digging into his relationship with Cohn. It’s a mentor-protégé story that charts the origins of a major American dynasty. Filled with larger than life characters, it reveals the moral and human cost of a culture defined by winners and losers.
The real-life former Potus is currently standing trial in a criminal hush-money case in New York.
Gabriel Sherman, whose bestseller The Loudest Voice in the Room inspired Showtime’s miniseries The Loudest Voice, starring Russell Crowe as Fox News founder Roger Ailes, wrote The Apprentice script.
The Apprentice producers are Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films, Jacob Jarek of Profile Pictures and Ruth Treacy of Taylored Films. Executive producers are Grant S. Johnson, Sherman and Amy Baer, in association with Kinematics as the financier.
International sales are being handled by Rocket Science with CAA and WME on domestic sales in Cannes. Studiocanal recently acquired UK-Ireland rights.

To clear any confusion up front, The Apprentice has nothing to do with the NBC reality competition of that name, in which Donald Trump sifted through a field of aspiring businesspeople to identify the most promising of them, sending an eliminated contestant home each week with the brutal dismissal, “You’re fired!” On the other hand, you could say that Ali Abbasi’s biographical drama has everything to do with the television series.
It’s a reverse reflection of the mentorship process, in which the host becomes the hungry young upstart, laying the foundations for a business empire built in part out of smoke and mirrors, and operating under the guidance of a master manipulator.
Written by political journalist and Roger Ailes biographer Gabriel Sherman, the movie is first and foremost the story of a Faustian pact, in which the eager apprentice is schooled to ditch conventional notions of morality,...

Megyn Kelly has become quite a controversial figure over the years. However, there is no denying that she played an important role in the Fox News scandal against the founder, Roger Ailes, during the MeToo movement. This was perfectly depicted in Charlize Theron’s 2019 film, Bombshell. The film was an exceptional success, even winning an Academy Award, and the journalist seemed to agree with this.

However, this sentiment seems to have changed over the years. Not because of the film and its story, but because of something the actress said during the press tour. Kelly recently spoke out about a comment Theron made about her assault that made her very upset.

South African-American actress and producer Charlize Theron known for her versatility and range in a wide variety of film roles, proved her determination and quick wit when it came to Bombshell (2019). It’s official: Donald Trump — or at least a fictionalized version of him — is heading to Cannes.
The prestigious French film festival unveiled its 2024 official film selection Thursday in Paris, and Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice was among the titles revealed for the event’s main competition.
The biographical drama stars Sebastian Stan as Trump and explores his career as an aspiring real estate tycoon in the New York City of the 1970s and 1980s. The film is described as a mentor-protégé narrative that documents the start of an American dynasty and tackles themes including power, corruption and deception. It delves into the relationship between Trump and Roy Cohn, the New York City prosecutor oft-remembered for working with Sen. Joseph McCarthy during the Second Red Scare.

Scoop is a dramatized feature about the BBC’s Newsnight team scoring a sensationally revealing 2019 interview with Prince Andrew about his relationship with millionaire sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. For a film about a journalistic exclusive, it has the most generic title possible. There are already at least four other movies out there called Scoop, including a rubbishy 2006 Woody Allen film and a 1987 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s peerless 1938 satirical novel, a twofer satire of both the press and the British aristocracy.
Sadly, this latest Scoop has none of Waugh’s acid wit or alkaline intelligence. Although serviceable as a retread of the events that led up to the royal interview conducted by Newsnight anchor Emily Maitlis (impersonated here by Gillian Anderson), an interview recreated for big chunks of the running time, it doesn’t significantly deepen or enrich our understanding of the personalities involved — let alone journalism, privilege, sexual exploitation or the price of fish.

Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe seemingly starred in every other film in the early 2000s. He has become more selective in recent years, so that when he does appear onscreen in a film, it feels like more of an event. Most recently, he strikingly transformed into disgraced former Fox News head Roger Ailes in the Showtime limited series “The Loudest Voice,” for which he won a Golden Globe and earned a SAG nomination.
Crowe is one of only a handful of actors to have been Oscar-nominated for a leading role in three consecutive years — 1999’s “The Insider,” 2000’s “Gladiator” (win) and 2001’s “A Beautiful Mind,” all of which were also nominated for Best Picture (with “Gladiator” and “A Beautiful Mind” winning). The premise of "Air Force One" — President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) foils terrorists who hijack his plane, John McClane-style — requires national unity. The film calls for you to root for the president and only works if the majority of the audience (i.e. the U.S. population) sees their president as an unimpeachable good guy (pun intended). That is simply not the reality of America of 2024. "Air Force One" screenwriter Andrew Marlowe spoke to Syfy recently about why, to use the cliché, the film couldn't be made today.
"When we were doing it, the presidency and that position was not as politically charged as it is today. And so, I think that there are specific challenges about doing it in the contemporary climate that we would have to figure out."
Marlowe adds he'd only be interested in a follow-up if it reflected the world as is now: "Are we saying something new?...

Sebastian Stan will play a younger version of Donald Trump in a film that is set to explore ‘power, corruption and deception’ in a period New York City movie.
Sebastian Stan (pictured here in Fresh) will be taking on his most controversial role yet in The Apprentice: playing a younger version of the hugely divisive Donald Trump.
Whilst Stan is perhaps known best for playing Bucky, the brooding Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beyond that role he’s not averse to the odd creative risk.
Along with Lily James (who portrayed Pamela Anderson), his version of rock star Tommy Lee in Hulu’s biographical miniseries, Pam & Tommy was critically lauded but sparked wide debate over whether the duo (and their fellow collaborators) had the right to tell that story.
Less controversial but certainly on the edgy side was his role in last year’s Fresh, which we...

Former White House press secretary-turned-MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki torched Fox News and Rupert Murdoch after the announcement of his departure from the company on Thursday.
In announcing the exit, Murdoch appointed his son Lachlan in his place as chairman of Fox and News Corp. After decades of relentlessly building a massive media empire, however, Murdoch’s exit didn’t leave Psaki with high hopes for the future of Fox News without him.
“You can’t really talk about the right wing ecosystem in this country without talking about Rupert Murdoch, who announced this week that he’s retiring from his role as chairman of Fox and News Corp,” Psaki said on Sunday’s episode of “Inside With Jen Psaki.”
The MSNBC host continued, “But even if he never sets foot in his office again, he removes himself entirely — which, by the way, I’m very skeptical of — he’s...

The last time Rupert Murdoch believed that he had created the Next Big Thing, he celebrated at the Temple of Dendur.
The Roman Egyptian temple, completed in 10 Bce, was dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis, who was believed to help the dead enter the afterlife.
Now a few Millennia later, the Temple of Dendur resides as a centerpiece in the collection of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, where thousands of visitors gather each year to marvel at its grandeur.
The evening of Oct. 24, 2007, Murdoch gathered New York’s business and media elite at the Temple, where hundreds of candles spelled out the word “Fox” as they entered the venue.
The purpose of the party was a celebration of Murdoch’s new idea, one conceived with his Fox News lieutenant Roger Ailes: a competitor to CNBC called Fox Business Network.

The ruthless, decades-long sibling rivalry that inspired “Succession” is coming to a quiet close, as Rupert Murdoch hands the keys to Fox and News Corp to his eldest son Lachlan. But with the less-hands-on son taking over from the business and media legend, experts say this family saga is far from over.
Murdoch for decades was concerned about his successor, and long wanted one of his three children with his second wife — Elisabeth, Lachlan and James — to take over, at one point intentionally plunging them into a lengthy succession battle. Besides being the oldest son, Lachlan also had the advantage of sharing his father’s right-wing political ideology, and his heir-apparent status became clear in recent years as he ascended within Fox Corp.
But analysts suggest that Lachlan, 52, will struggle to fill his father’s legendary shoes, at a particularly challenging time for Fox News.

The news that Rupert Murdoch was stepping down as chairman of Fox Corp. and News Corp. quickly triggered talk of his legacy, overshadowing one aspect of his announcement: Whether it comes to politics or to his companies’ media properties, he’s not going away.
In his announcement to employees, Murdoch insisted that he would be involved “every day in the contest of ideas,” while echoing some of the cancel-culture themes prevalent on Fox News and in the New York Post: “Self-serving bureaucracies are seeking to silence those who would question their provenance and purpose. Elites have open contempt for those who are not members of their rarefied class. Most of the media is in cahoots with those elites, peddling political narratives rather than pursuing the truth.”
The 92-year-old mogul added: “I will be watching our broadcasts with a critical eye, reading our newspapers and websites and books with much interest,...

Lachlan Murdoch, the 52-year-old scion, has — at least for now — won the game of succession at the media empire built by his aging father, Rupert.
Lachlan is not a change agent. His assumption of sole day-to-day command at News Corporation and Fox Corporation is a story of continuity — which likely means that the media organs under his watch will continue their signature mix of tabloid populism, climate denial, and mindless Maga-mania. In the letter announcing Lachlan’s promotion, Rupert called him “absolutely committed to the cause.”

Rupert Murdoch’s retirement from the boards of Fox and News Corporation is the event we’ve been waiting for.
The most critically-acclaimed television series of the modern era, “Succession,” imagined a Murdoch figure struggling with the decision to let go of the reins. Journalist Michael Wolff’s book “The Fall,” to be released next week, muses about a post-Rupert world. That world will, we now know, arrive as soon as November, when Murdoch becomes chairman emeritus of both companies, and his son Lachlan Murdoch takes charge.
Murdoch has been consequential not merely for his Oz-like dominion over the global news landscape but for the substance of what his news organizations do. In the U.S., his Fox News, scrappily assembled in 1996 and given its voice and its vim by the late Roger Ailes, has set the agenda for the modern conservative movement, with its opinion hosts broadcasting in bitter...

Fox News executive John Finley, fired last week after more than two decades with the network, was pushed out after a woman alleged she was sexually harassed and stalked, according to a Friday report by Mediaite citing sources it did not name.
The network said Finley was fired for violating company standards, but did not clarify what those standards were. “Fox News Media and John Finley have parted ways after an independent investigation concluded that he had violated certain standards of business conduct,” a Fox News spokesperson told TheWrap.
A recent investigation conducted by an outside law firm resulted in Finley being placed on leave from his role as executive vice president of development. He was subsequently fired.
Mediaite reports that a woman who was not an employee of Fox but has worked on projects for Fox Nation, which was helmed by Finley, had reached an undisclosed settlement with the network.

When Megyn Kelly launched a new podcast via her own production company in 2020, she feared it would have an audience of only two: her husband and her therapist. Three years later, her worries appear to have been unfounded.
In a sign of how her listenership has grown, she is extending a multi-year deal she has in place for the program to run first on SiriusXM — which has raised her visibility — that will keep her broadcasting “The Megyn Kelly Show” live on the company’s Triumph channel between noon and 2 p.m. eastern weekdays well through the 2024 election. Kelly expects to interview former President Donald Trump and play the exchange over the course of an hour on the September 14 edition of her program.
The situation seems to suit her. “I could never go back to having a boss. I don’t do well with bosses,” Kelly says in an interview with Variety,...

A New York judge declined to toss out former Fox News executive Laura Luhn’s lawsuit against the network and its then-parent company over the settlement of her claims that ex-network head Roger Ailes abused her and tried to blackmail her.
Luhn is challenging an agreement she signed with the network, claiming that it was entered into under duress. The agreement was for her then salary of $250,000, to be paid annually until her retirement age, which was 12 years from the time it was signed.
The judge, Lyle Frank, rejected the company’s motion to dismiss. He wrote that the complaint “is replete with factual allegations regarding duress and her inability to report the alleged sexual abuse and misconduct while it was occurring. At this stage of the litigation, the duress that is alleged that occurred prior to the negotiation of the agreement between the parties is enough for this case not to be dismissed,...

A judge has advanced a lawsuit from former Fox News employee Laura Luhn, who sued the network over decades of alleged sexual abuse by late CEO Roger Ailes.
The state supreme court judge, Justice Lyle Frank, found on Monday that a settlement Luhn signed releasing Fox News from claims of discrimination and negligence — including an allegation that Ailes blackmailed her with sexually explicit videos — isn’t enforceable because she may have signed the deal under duress.
Fox’s latest legal headache involves claims from Luhn, filed in January, that she was subjected to two decades of sexual abuse by Ailes. She sued the network, parent company 21st Century Fox and former co-president Bill Shine after the passage of the New York’s Adult Survivors Act, which temporarily lifted the statute of limitations on certain allegations of sexual misconduct. Before Margot Robbie was Barbie, she was Harley Quinn, Naomi Lapaglia, Tonya Harding, and many more characters. There's no doubt Robbie loves her job as an actor, and while tackling the role of an iconic children's toy wasn't initially on her career bucket list, it's clear she's happy she took a chance with the role.
A month before the highly anticipated July 2023 release of "Barbie," Robbie spoke to Vogue about how playing the role never even crossed her mind. "It wasn't that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that," she explained. "This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn't even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project."
And while "Barbie" might arguably be Robbie's most hyped-up movie in her career so far, it's by no means the only role she's slayed. Take a look back at Robbie's best movies below.

The summer’s most anticipated comedy is Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. After her two box office misfires of 2022 — “Amsterdam” and “Babylon” — Robbie is on the cusp of her first critical darling and giant financial hit in a long while. Two of her acclaimed performances brought her Academy Award nominations in the previous decade, so with “Barbie” opening in theaters, let’s look back at Robbie’s two Oscar races.
Her first Oscar nomination came in 2018 in the Best Actress category for her performance as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.” Written by Steven Rogers and directed by Craig Gillespie, the film tells the true-life story of Harding’s rise in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships and how everything came crashing down. With his relationship with Fox News apparently souring, Geraldo Rivera is thinking about retirement, and said he will announce his next career move in a week on Twitter and “The Five,” the show he will exit next week.
Rivera posted on Twitter Friday that he had spoken to Brian Kilmeade on his Wabc radio show and said, “I am unsure about my next career move & will announce next Friday here on Twitter & Live on @TheFive whether I stay with Fox or do something else, with your support.”
The correspondent for the conservative news network, who was recruited by founder Roger Ailes in 2001, said June 30 will be his last appearance on the talk show.
While the post generated a few inevitable references to his ill-fated 1986 live excavation of Al Capone’s vault, most of the comments were positive.
Some followers suggested that the social media platform may be all the veteran journalist needs.

With a running time of 96 minutes, Frank Marshall’s Rather, a documentary about the life and times of Dan Rather, is premiering at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival opposite Luke Korem’s Milli Vanilli, a 106-minute documentary about the life and times of Milli Vanilli. I know that both documentaries exist in their own vacuums and the comparison is apples to rutabagas, but I’m still confident in saying this: A definitive documentary about Dan Rather is going to require more time to properly tell its story than a definitive documentary about Milli Vanilli.
In its home stretch, Rather mentions that for a young generation weaned on social media, Dan Rather is an amusingly cantankerous Twitter truth-teller, but those new fans have very little awareness that he was once a revered (and briefly disgraced) journalist and broadcast nightly news anchor. Leaving aside that those Rather-adoring whelps similarly don’t...

Conservative media personality Megyn Kelly went after CNN’s Chris Licht and his ability to lead the news organization after a profile in The Atlantic put him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
“In the piece, Licht comes across as self-aggrandizing and insecure, uttering phrases to a reporter like ‘I’m a machine!’ while pumping iron in the gym. My god. What kind of a man does that?” Kelly questioned during her Tuesday episode of SiriusXM’s “The Megyn Kelly Show,” later adding: “It’s clear he fancies himself a mini Roger Ailes wannabe.”

In the spring of 2020, Tucker Carlson went to war with one of Fox News’ most powerful figures.
Carlson had grown so furious with Fox’s communications and PR chief, Irena Briganti, that he attempted to get her fired, people familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone. Briganti, formerly a key lieutenant to the late, disgraced Fox News mastermind Roger Ailes, had been an influential figure in the cable-news industry for years, as an infamously aggressive enforcer within Fox’s public-relations apparatus.
But after years of mutual antipathy between the executive and the high-profile host,...

Who’s trying to trash Tucker Carlson?
Bad looks for the disgraced Fox host have been leaking all week, from video clips of offensive banter and “creepy comments” captured between show tapings, as Media Matters put it, to his now-infamous “not how white men fight” remark made in a text exchange with a producer.
The text was reported late Tuesday by the New York Times, which cited people with access to un-redacted copies of text messages and other communication presented in the Fox News vs. Dominion case discovery. The videos, meanwhile, have been dribbled out on the left-leaning nonprofit media watchdog site – and prolific Carlson critic – Media Matters, with the special headline tag Foxleaks.
The knives may be out, but the assassins are still in hiding – and this whodunit has more suspects than a game of “Clue.”

What is Rupert Murdoch up to? At age 92 he confronts the challenge of re-energizing Fox News, yet his stewardship remains as enigmatic as his politics.
Hollywood remembers that for 30 years Murdoch owned, then dismembered, a major movie company, yet never made clear whether he liked or hated movies. He stalwartly runs what is technically a family company, yet his relations with family (and with marital candidates) remain volatile.
So who is Rupert? A key player for a generation in worldwide journalism, he would not be a comfortable mix with attendees at this weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Roger Ailes, the first head of Fox News, once explained to me, “Rupert is a great man, whoever he is.” Murdoch supported Ailes in building a news colossus, then empowered his self-destruction.
If few understand Murdoch, few can define Tucker Carlson either. That’s why Murdoch created him, associates argue, and now is nimbly discarding him.
