Only This and Nothing More: Kempff Explores Cultural Gaslighting in Parochial Thriller
As in the timeless singsong of Poe’s classic poem “The Raven,” ‘suddenly there came a tapping’ in Knocking, the directorial debut of celebrated Swedish short filmmaker Frida Kempff, based on a novella by Johan Theorin (whose Echoes of the Dead was adapted by Daniel Alfredson in 2013).
An insular exercise of how the cultural stigma of mental illness creates a glaring pathway of socially acceptable forms of gaslighting, the success of such an exercise is dependent on the well-executed lead performance of Cecilia Milocco, who is equally sympathetic and frustrating as a woman whose faculties are also questioned by an audience conditioned into dismissiveness.…...

Phoebe Fox was born in to an acting family, the daughter of actors Stuart Fox and Prue Clarke. When she was a young girl, she got to see her mother play Cinderella. “I was seven or eight and couldn’t get over the fact my mom was Cinderella,” she says with a laugh. “To me, it just seemed like the best job, playing make-believe.”
After attending the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada), Fox soon made a name for herself onstage in plays like “A View from the Bridge” opposite Mark Strong and films like “Eye in the Sky” and “The Aeronauts.”
This week, she can be seen in two very different roles: now available on digital and streaming is “Intrigo: Samaria,” a mystery from Swedish director Daniel Alfredson; the film is the third in a trilogy of films based on stories from acclaimed Swedish writer Håkan Nesser. Fox plays Paula,...

Venom crossed the $300m threshold via Sony Pictures Releasing International (Spri) this week and currently stands at $302.5m – but can it hold off Universal Pictures International’s (Upi) big push for Halloween?

The following article contains minor spoilers for “Blade Runner 2049.”
In addition to a pair of memorable performances from Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, cinematographer Roger Deakins’ stunning visual work, and director Denis Villeneuve’s dystopian vision, “Blade Runner 2049” has one more element worthy of excitement: a supporting cast of new and rising stars. Many of them have already made their mark on indie cinema, like the perpetually working David Dastmalchian or the irreverent Carla Juri, while others will likely use Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic as a springboard for even bigger careers (like Ana de Armas, the film’s biggest find).

As the Sarajevo Film Festival gets underway, Screen considers the regional funding landscape.
Film funds and national agencies in Southeastern Europe are more prevalent than at any point since the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.
However, while there is growing trust among filmmakers and producers that public funding for their projects is accessible - if not abundant - structural and political challenges still abound.
Below, Screen considers the public funding landscape across the Balkans.
Croatia
For five years the Croatian Audiovisual Fund (Havc) was a shining example of a well-organised and appreciated institution in the region. In the last year, however, the organisation has experienced turbulent change and political interference, which resulted in CEO Hrvoje Hribar resigning in May.
Things are slowly getting back on track under new director Daniel Rafaelić, despite a recent dispute over funding for a Swiss documentary.

"You don't have to go with us. Once you do, there's no turning back..." Enderby Entertainment & Gotham Group have debuted the trailer for a thriller called Blackway, about a grotesquely crooked cop played by Ray Liotta - perfect casting for this role, that's for sure. He steps over the line one last time, assaulting a woman who then takes a small crew to confront him head on. Anthony Hopkins and Julia Stiles co-star, with a cast including Alexander Ludwig, Lochlyn Munro and Hal Holbrook. This is one of those films where you can't believe it has this cast, with that many reputable names, yet looks so awful. Even the score is terribly cheesy. No really, this just looks straight-to-cable awful. I am sorry this isn't any better than it is. Daniel Alfredson's claim to fame involves directing the second and third installments of the Swedish "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" trilogy. ★☆☆☆☆ Daniel Alfredson's appallingly bland backwoods drama Go With Me (2015) stars Anthony Hopkins as ex-logger Lester, who comes to the aid of harassed waitress Lillian (Julia Stiles). While Lester spends his evenings making garden ornaments in memory of his dead wife, Lillian is redecorating her dead mother's house. Trouble lurks in the hedgerows via stalker Blackway (Ray Liotta), who has already assaulted Lillian outside of her restaurant and decapitated her cat. The sheriff (Dale Wilson) proves worse than useless and suggests she go to find local Whizzer and ask for the help of his friend Scotty. Like a sneaky taxi driver the script takes us around the houses, rather than anywhere we want to go.
Whizzer (Hal Holbrook) doesn't know where his pal Scotty (Aaron Pearl) is but Lester, on an apparent whim, decides he will take up the mantle of Lillian's guardian angel. Not exactly moving with the lightning speed of an avenger,...

Then again, such a moment in Daniel Alfredson's "Go With Me" is a near-perfect summation of the film as a whole: dully shot, performed as though underwater, and almost entirely pointless. A would-be gritty tale that sets a minimal plot barely ticking over in the forests and mountains of British Columbia, it clearly has designs on being a sort of woodsy, foggy modern-day Western in which terse characters with tragic backstories live out hardscrabble lives, adhering to personal codes and doing What They Gotta Do. But if there's a trick to making such stories lithe and resonant rather than episodic and mechanical, it's one "Go With Me" has missed. Instead, we get a thriller so turgid that...

Not unlike previous years, the 2015 edition has a good numbers of films from Italy and the U.S., with several France co-productions littered throughout and the addition of fresh faces with first time works from composer Piero Messina and artist/musician Laurie Anderson.

On the heels of yesterday's Toronto Film Festival announcement, this morning we get the lineup for the 2015 Venice Film Festival and, as always, there's a little crossover with some films set to premiere on the Lido ahead of their Toronto (and/or Telluride premieres). Some of the titles not screening at Toronto (at least not yet) that will premiere at Venice include Baltasar Kormakur's Everest, which is serving as the opening night film, Drake Doremus' Equals starring Kristen Stewart, A Bigger Splash from Luca Guadagnino, Go With Me directed by Daniel Alfredson, Dito Montiel's Man Down, Amy Berg's Janis as well as a new, 16-minute short film from Martin Scorsese titled The Audition and a Brian De Palma documentary directed by Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow. There's also buzz building for The Childhood of a Leader directed by Brady Corbet and starring Robert Pattinson and Berenice Bejo.

The Venice Film Festival has become one of the longest-running events on the festival circuit, its veteran status giving it a level of prestige that has only been heightened by the films that have screened at the event. Having first started in 1932, a number of movies that have gone on to be classics have won prizes at the festival, including Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, Satyajit Ray’s Aparajito, and Alain Resnais’ Last Year at Marienbad. Interest in the festival’s lineup announcement has thus grown over the years, with many film fans curious to see what the organisers select to play at the event, due to its stature. The full lineup for the 2015 incarnation of the festival, the 72nd one in the festival’s history, has now been announced. The festival itself will run from September 2nd to the 12th, with a jury that includes Alfonso Cuarón, Nuri Bilge Ceylan,...

There are two new thrillers out this weekend in limited release that are well worth your time, and I reviewed them here. Two more indie thrillers hit both theaters and VOD yesterday, but they’re enough of a mixed bag for me to suggest you wait for their inevitable DVD or Netflix release instead. Both are produced and acted well enough, but they share a single trait that keeps them from the recommended list. For everything they do, it’s the things they don’t do that ultimately underwhelms. Cor van Hout (Jim Sturgess) is a man between jobs. It’s the early ’80s, and the economy in Amsterdam is in the canal leaving him far more motivated towards illicit employment. His friends are in the same boat — Jan (Ryan Kwanten) is good with his hands, Frans (Mark van Eeuwen) is a wild man and Willem (Sam Worthington) is an aggressive go-getter with an existing grudge against...

In 1983 — as chronicled in Dutch investigative reporter Peter R. de Vries's bestseller — five financially desperate childhood pals turned to crime, capturing wealthy beer magnate Freddy Heineken (and his chauffeur Ab Doderer) in broad daylight after robbing a bank to fund their operation. Not to be confused with 2011's liberties-taking thriller The Heineken Kidnapping (a more ambitious and exciting film, with Rutger Hauer as the abducted mogul), The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest director Daniel Alfredson's exposition-heavy English-language adaptation boasts an amusingly belligerent Anthony Hopkins as the brew baron and little else. Jim Sturgess, Sam Worthington, and True Blood's Ryan Kwanten co-star in this glossy, lifelessly paced ...

Title: Kidnapping Mr. Heineken Director: Daniel Alfredson Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Sam Worthington, Jim Sturgess and Ryan Kwanten People often take pride in all the hard work they put into garnering fame and fortune, particularly when their efforts provide much needed support for their families. But when their persistent work ethic fails to offer them enough money to efficiently provide for their loved ones, they’re often driven to take drastic measures to comfortably sustain them. That’s certainly the case in director Daniel Alfredson’s new action crime drama, ‘Kidnapping Mr. Heineken,’ which is set to be released on Friday on iTunes and VOD and in theaters. Yes, your first assumption is correct – Kidnapping Mr. Heineken details the imprisonment of Amsterdam’s most iconic beer entrepreneur, and even more shocking is that it’s based on a true crime. Back in 1983, Freddy Heineken and his driver Ab Doderer were kidnapped by local scoundrels and then released some three weeks later for 35 million Dutch guilders – the largest ransom ever paid for one individual. As an avid beer drinker and alcohol culture snob, my complete ignorance of the real event is surprising and shameful, but Daniel Alfredson does an amicable job of filling in the blanks. Peter R. de Vries’s source novelization serves as a proper jumping point for writer William Brookfield, as he and Alfredson find a tense balance between historical recreation and cinematic embellishment – either of which can easily sink a true story when handled clumsily.

It was a best-selling phenomenon. It spawned a trilogy of hit Swedish movies which turned Noomi Rapace into a global star. It also generated an American adaptation helmed by David Fincher that scored good notices and a decent $232 million worldwide.
Yet with a budget of $90 million, Fincher's R-rated English language adaptation of Stieg Larsson's best-seller "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" wasn't a runaway hit. As a result, progress on the sequel has stumbled since the first film's release over three years ago.
Sadly it now appears the project may well be dead. Rooney Mara, who took on the iconic role of Lisbeth Salander in the first movie, has indicated in an interview with E! Online that the second novel in the series "The Girl Who Played with Fire" isn't likely to get a U.S. screen treatment:

The halls are starting to hum softly here in Berlin as the European Film Market swings into gear. The first deals were announced yesterday before the event officially opened, with The Weinstein Co notably boarding Im Global’s The Man Who Made It Snow. This morning, FilmNation unveiled a series of offshore output deals for titles from Open Road, which will kick off with the Jamie Foxx/Michelle Monaghan-starrer Sleepless Nights.
Though it’s not likely to be a frenzy, and with currency concerns in the market internationally, Berlin should see more action in the coming days. Distributors are looking for product for 2016 and beyond, and some memorable buys have emerged here in recent years. In 2014, The Weinstein Company made a record-setting $7M deal for The Imitation Game which has now made about $140M worldwide and has an armful of Oscar nominations to boot.

True story or not, Kidnapping Mr. Heineken looks like a nice little thriller. Sam Worthington gets shit on quite a bit as an actor, but his ensemble work has been much stronger than his leading man roles. In this thriller, Worthington is flanked by Ryan Kwanten and Jim Sturgess in the tale of a kidnapping gone awry. At the center is Anthony Hopkins who looks to be turning in yet another duplicitous role. As you can see, director Daniel Alfredson has put together a nice visual style in the...

There's a chance you might remember a foreign film called The Heineken Kidnapping starring Rutger Hauer, about the abduction of Alfred Heineken, the heir to the beer empire of the same name. Well, there was another film about the same event, but Kidnapping Mr. Heineken puts more of a focus on the thriller nature of the story with Sam Worthington, Ryan Kwanten and Jim Sturgess attempting to pull of what would become one of the biggest crimes of the decade. But rather than the plan going wrong, the kidnapping of Mr. Heineken (Anthony Hopkins) actually works, but that's just the beginning. Watch!
