It’s lucky 13 for the fun and fabulous Coney Island Film Festival! That’s right, 2013 will see the 13th annual edition of this New York City staple that combines the fine art of filmmaking with the rambunctious art of sideshow performing on Sept. 20-22.
The fest opens on the 20th with the documentary More Than the Rainbow, a profile of Matt Weber, an NYC cab driver who moonlights as an art photographer. The film is directed by Dan Wechsler.
Other docs screening at the fest include the uplifting tale of A Clown’s Recovery, directed by Matthew Broomfield; the sports drama of One Wall: Kings of Coney Island, directed by Joe Glickman; the profile of a Coney Island legend in The Commander in Chief, directed by Jim McDonnell; the struggle of Bending Steel, directed by Dave Carroll; and World Circus, directed by Angela Snow.
But, there are also fiction films in the mix,...

Humor is on deck in this hilarious behind-the-scenes look at “Peeples,” written and directed by Tina Gordon Chism and starring Craig Robinson, Kerry Washington, David Allen Grier, S. Epatha Merkerson, Tyler Williams, Melvin Van Peebles and Diahann Carroll. Take a look at the video below the post. “Peeples” focuses on one man’s mission to get permission to marry a stodgy father’s daughter: “Sparks fly when Wade Walker (Craig Robinson) crashes the preppy Peeples annual reunion in the Hamptons to ask for their precious daughter Grace’s (Kerry Washington) hand in marriage. Wade might be a fish-out-of-water among this seemingly perfect East Coast clan, but he’s not about to let himself flounder. [ Read More ]

Ocala, Fla. — Police in north Florida cited country music singer David Allen Coe for running a red light before being struck by a tractor-trailer near downtown Ocala.
The Ocala Star-Banner () reports the crash occurred early Tuesday. A message on his website says 73-year-old Coe is "recuperating from his accident and will be ok." His agent told the newspaper that Coe's concerts in St. Louis and Louisville, Ky., have been canceled. http://bit.ly/15ZV3t5
Authorities say the truck's driver, 50-year-old Robert Johnson and 49-year-old Lisa Meade, also were injured.
Ocala police say Coe was driving a 2011 Suburban when he ran the red light. The truck hit the SUV broadside, pushing it into a nearby parking lot. The truck flipped on its side, wrapped around a pole and spilled the radishes and corn it was hauling.

Oklahoma City — Oklahoma prosecutors on Thursday charged a second man with killing a prostitute featured on HBO's "Cathouse series" and three other people.
Denny Edward Phillips faces six counts of first-degree murder for the 2009 shooting deaths of Brooke Phillips, 22, who had worked as a prostitute at the legal brothel Moonlite Bunny Ranch near Carson City, Nev., Milagrous Barrera, 22, Jennifer Ermey, 25, and Casey Mark Barrientos, 32. The two additional murder charges are because Brooke Phillips and Barrera were pregnant.
The victims were found inside a burning home in southwest Oklahoma City. Phillips, who was not related to Brooke Phillips, faces an additional charge of conspiracy to commit murder.
Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater said he plans to seek the death penalty.
"We believe he ordered the hit on Casey Barrientos," Prater told The Associated Press. The others were killed to eliminate witnesses to Barrientos' slaying, the prosecutor said.

London (AP) — Rupert Murdoch's Sky News channel twice authorized its reporters to hack into computers, a potentially embarrassing revelation that could further dent the media tycoon's hope of acquiring full control over satellite broadcaster BSkyB.
Sky News said in a statement that in one case it broke into emails belonging to Anne and John Darwin, the so-called "canoe couple" who became notorious in Britain after the latter faked his own death in a boating accident as part of an elaborate insurance scam.
It acknowledged intercepting the couple's emails, but said that the material was later handed to police and insisted it had done nothing wrong.
"We stand by these actions as editorially justified and in the public interest. We do not take such decisions lightly or frequently," Sky News chief John Ryley said in a statement.

You guys have been digging the short films we've been posting lately so here's another one for you to check out. Desdemona 6 is a 12-minute short film that channels feelings of Christine and even a bit of Halloween. It brings new meaning to the term "muscle car."
This is the second short film from Last Call Pictures, and this one has a real '70s grindhouse feel to it. Desdemona 6 features Katie Bearden, Jason Mac and Bruce Rowland and was directed by Johnny Priest, who also handled the writing duties with Mac Allen. Music was done by Rich Douglas and stunt driving by Rowland and David Allen. Be sure to stick around after the credits for an additional scene.

A Portland, Oregon, man was sentenced to 45 days in jail and a psychiatric evaluation after he was arrested at a Toys "R" Us for attacking customers with a pair of toy lightsabers. Police subdued David Allen Canterbury, 33, the would-be Sith Lord, after he entered the toy store and retrieved two plastic lightsabers and proceeded to attack customers in the parking lot.
According to reports Canterbury was able to deflect the wire of a police Taser before eventually being wrestled down by officers. The force is strong in this one.
Fortunately, no Padawans were injured during the melee, though a story like this begs the question: Where was the Star Wars Kid when all of this was going down?

Pro-Tip, kids: the all-time won-lost tally in standoffs between unhinged folk wielding replica lightsabers and law enforcement wielding Tasers and firearms will always be pretty one-sided. Portland police said that 33-year-old David Allen Canterbury went to a local Toys R Us store, grabbed toy "Star Wars" lightsabers in each hand and started to hit customers with them. He then carried the lightsabers outside the store and swung at police. Officers tried to use a Taser to subdue him, but Canterbury successfully deflected one of the wires away. Police eventually wrestled him to the ground before taking him into custody. Canterbury pleaded no contest to fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest. The judge sentenced Canterbury to 45 days in jail, two years of probation and a mental-health evaluation that could call for treatment. Canterbury told the judge that he is already seeking mental-health treatment. He also apologized to his victims. Canterbury has been banned from Toys R Us. The judge did not give him additional time for violating the terms of his probation for a previous heroin-possession conviction.

It's only a matter of time before someone figures out how to make a real-life lightsaber. Sure, it's going to be tricky, as you have to find a way to actually make the laser stop and not blast through the roof every time you turn the damn thing on, but once those kinds of kinks are worked out we'll be in business. Until then, though, we'll just have to make due with swinging around shower curtain rods like George Michael in Arrested Development. Or you can do like some random guy in Portland, Oregon and use the toy versions. Oregon Live (via Giant Freakin Robot) has reported an incident in the Pacific Northwest state that involved a disorderly man named David Allen Canterbury, 33, who dual-wielded a pair of toy lightsabers and started swinging them around in a local Toys R Us, hitting random customers, and then proceeded to venture outside...

Actress Jaime King has hired a top nutritionist to help her on the road to good health after years spent eating "like a toddler" to maintain the body of "a 14-year-old-girl".
The 32-year-old Sin City star doesn't want to become an actress who sets a bad example for the next generation of young stars - and so she has stopped being so obsessed with her weight, and she has called on food doctor David Allen to help her make better choices about what she eats.
She tells Life & Style magazine, "I grew up in Hollywood, and my whole life I've believed that I have to look like a 14-year-old.
"I've had this weird expectation that I should weigh 118 pounds, even though I'm five-feet-eight. I don't want to put that image out to young women, that they have to look like a prepubescent girl."
King reveals she has been eating "like a toddler" for years, explaining, "I'd eat little bites of a lot of different things, like peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches, turkey bacon, oatmeal and chocolate-covered pretzels."
But she has started to get serious about what she puts in her body and has called on nutritionist Allen to help her stay healthy.

Rioters chose Rim. But Twitter and Facebook's new mob mostly carry brooms. "It's Like Hogwarts," says an observer.
After another night of rioting in London left some London communities crisping at the edges and littered with glass, a Twitter-rallied force of do-gooders are taking to the streets with gloves, brooms, and dustpans to clean up the mess.
If Rim was the choice of rioters, Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook are the tools of the clean-up crews.
Using the Twitter handle @Riotcleanup, citizens are coming together following protests of the police shooting a Tottenham man. The Twitter account is raking in thousands of new followers per hour in the process. (At last count they had 59,000.)
Meanwhile, Riotcleanup.co.uk lists times and locations for cleanup efforts, along with suggestions for equipment that people could bring along.

Shout! Factory once again is giving us a double feature DVD, one a blaxploitation film set in New York City and the other a gritty noir-flavored film set in Saigon during the Vietnam War. Both have the connection to the war itself. And I’ll be the first to say that they are both worth your time, forgotten gems that have never seen the light of a DVD release until now.
Ossie Davis directs Gordon’s War, actor and director who made what I consider the finest blaxploitation film around (Cotton Comes To Harlem) and he does wonders with a tried and through plot consisting of a man on a mission of revenge against those who wronged the people of his neighborhood in the mode of good ol’ 70′s vigilante justice. Gordon Hudson (Paul Winfield) comes home from the Vietnam War where he finds out that his wife has died from a heroin overdose.
