Fuse Group, a visual effects firm that has acquired a number of smaller shops in recent years with private equity backing, has changed its name to Pitch Black as it looks to grow into a top post-production vendor for studios and streamers who need to produce content at high volume.
Pitch Black CEO Sébastien Bergeron said the new moniker is meant to invoke a broad range of possibilities presented by a dark screen. “It’s mysterious for us — it’s like a blank canvas of our own universe,” he told Variety.
Despite the rebranding for the parent company, Pitch Black’s banners will retain their own names and label identities in the marketplace. The business case behind the Pitch Black roll-up is to offer big studio and streamer clients a menu of vfx labels, each with different specialities, but in a one-stop shopping environment under one corporate umbrella with offices around the world.

Adelaide’s Rising Sun Pictures has been acquired by the LA-headquartered FuseFX, in a deal that is argued to “position the business for global strategic growth”.
In addition to LA, FuseFX has studios across the world including in New York, Atlanta, Vancouver, Montréal, Toronto, and Bogotá. With the acquisition of Rsp, it bolsters its staff numbers to 800.
Rsp was founded in 1995 by Tony Clark, Gail Fuller and Wayne Lewis, growing to become one of Australia’s most successful independent VFX businesses. Its credits span projects such as Mortal Kombat, Black Widow, Ford v Ferrari, Spider-Man: Far from Home, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Captain Marvel, The Predator, The Boys season 2, Game of Thrones, Thor: Ragnarok, The Hunger Games, Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Australian projects in recent years include Peter Rabbit, Deadline Gallipoli, Anzac Girls and The Water Diviner.

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...
