Fifty years ago, “Good Times” became the first sitcom to depict a two-parent Black American family. Now, Netflix is debuting a present-day animated reboot chronicling the Evanses two generations after the original. Set in Chicago’s Cabrini Green projects in the same apartment from the 1970s dramedy, the series follows Reggie (J.B. Smoove), his wife Beverly (Yvette Nicole Brown) and their children, Junior (Jay Pharoah), Grey (Marsai Martin) and Dalvin (Slink Johnson). Black people aren’t a monolith, and respectability politics certainly aren’t the answer to racism, sexism, bigotry and homophobia. Yet it’s puzzling that this mind-numbing series is how creator Ranada Shepard is paying homage to such a classic show while trying to speak to 21st-century Black people. It’s also very clear why Netflix decided against sending out screeners for review.
In the season opener, “Meet the Evans of New,” we learn about the new occupants of apartment 17C.

The legacy of Good Times continues 50 years on, as Netflix rolls out an animated reboot of the series on April 12.
The original CBS sitcom, created by Eric Monte and Mike Evans and developed by Norman Lear, offered a heartfelt focus on a working-class Black family and starred Esther Rolle as Florida Evans and John Amos as husband James, who were raising three kids in a Chicago public housing project. Rolle and Amos originated their characters on Maude, a spinoff of Lear’s seminal comedy All in the Family.
BernNadette Stanis, who was a teen when she landed her first-ever role as middle child Thelma, tells The Hollywood Reporter that Lear let her improvise audition lines with Jimmie Walker, who was already cast as older bro J.J. “I started in on Jimmie just like I would treat my real brothers,” says Stanis, who recalls stunning Walker when she playfully smacked his shoulder.

Good Times star John Amos is speaking out just days after the Los Angeles Police Department closed its investigation into claims of elder abuse. The investigation came after the actor’s daughter, Shannon Amos, claimed her father was a victim of “elderly abuse” last June. Per TMZ, the allegations were brought up again when Shannon called Adult Protective Services this spring. The Aps sent the case to the LAPD, who then launched an investigation, which found no evidence of wrongdoing. “I want to first of all thank the LAPD for their professionalism and thoroughness in their investigation in which they concluded that I am doing well,” John said in a statement, per People. “This is the same thing I have been saying all along in my response to the media.” The Roots actor continued, “I want to thank my fans for their kind words to me in support of my movement everywhere I travel.

The Los Angeles Police Department might have closed its investigation into claims of elder abuse against Good Times actor John Amos, but the star’s daughter is not letting the issue go away. Shannon Amos and her management team sent a statement to TV Insider on Monday, April 8, noting that she is dissatisfied with the results of the investigation. This comes after the LAPD said that police found no evidence that John was the victim of elder abuse. “While I acknowledge the efforts of the LAPD on my father’s case, I am disappointed with their conclusion since no one from my family has seen or spoken to my father since July 2023, when K.C. Amos [Shannon’s brother], Eugene Brummet, and Belinda Foster removed him from a medical facility against doctors’ orders,” Shannon said. “We continue to receive outreach from care providers, medical professionals, and others with evidence that raises...

John Amos is not the victim of elder abuse, according to a police investigation that found no proof to substantiate the claims made by the actor’s daughter, Shannon Amos. According to TMZ, the Los Angeles Police Department spoke to parties on both sides of the matter and officially closed the investigation. It was said that police found no wrongdoing and that there was not enough evidence to bring charges against anyone. The latest news comes after Shannon opened a GoFundMe page for her father last June, when he was 83, claiming he was a victim of “elderly abuse.” However, the page was later taken down after John and his son, K.C. Amos, said the claims were false and that Shannon was the one inflicting the abuse. At the time, Shannon claimed she’d contacted the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and alleged that her father was not receiving proper care at an intensive care unit.

The first trailer for Netflix’s animated reboot of the iconic ’70s sitcom Good Times was released last week, and the reaction has been… let’s say, mixed.
The original Norman Lear sitcom ran for six seasons from 1974 to 1979 and earned praise for its portrayal of a working-class Black family. The animated reboot follows a new generation of the Evans family as they keep their heads above water in a Chicago housing project, but the tone of the trailer, complete with a drug-dealing baby, didn’t exactly rub fans the right way.
While speaking with THR, original Good Times stars John Amos (James Evans) and BernNadette Stanis (Thelma) shared their thoughts on the trailer. Both actors made it clear that they aren’t ready to pass judgment until they’re able to see full episodes. “I really can’t form an opinion, as I’ve not seen any of the episodes yet,...

Stars of the original Good Times are weighing in after the trailer for Netflix’s forthcoming animated reboot led some fans to question whether the new project will indeed be “dynomite.”
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year after premiering in February 1974, Good Times focused on the Chicago-based Evans family, with the Norman Lear-produced series running for six seasons and earning praise for its realistic portrayal of a working-class Black family. After the first promo debuted last week for Netflix’s animated exploration of the Evans family’s current generation, plenty of social media users expressed surprise that the new series — which appears to double down on stereotypes with such elements as a drug-dealing infant — didn’t highlight the positive themes from the initial show.

“Good Times,” which celebrates its 50th anniversary on Feb. 8, suffered from an identity crisis during its six-season run on CBS. So much so, the lead actors — Esther Rolle and John Amos — would leave the popular second spinoff of ‘All in the Family”(Rolle would eventually return) because the sitcom changed focus.
Norman Lear ruled the airwaves in the 1970s. He blew up the conception of a family sitcom in 1971 with the CBS sitcom “All in the Family” which focused on a working class family from Queen lead by the bigoted patriarch Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor). During the first season, Bea Arthur guest starred as Maude, Edith Bunker’s (Jean Stapleton) favorite cousin who was the antithesis of Archie-outspoken, much married, ultra-liberal.
And after a second appearance on “All in the Family,” Arthur got her own series “Maude” in the fall of 1972. The breakout performer on that series was Esther...

Norman Lear, who recently passed away at the age of 101, transformed the network television sitcom in the 1970s by confronting America's cultural contentiousness head-on and daring viewers to laugh at a bigot like Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" or the white-folks-hating George Jefferson on "The Jeffersons." People were more than ready to accept this challenge. "All in the Family" was the top-rated show on television for six of its nine seasons, while "The Jeffersons" ranked in the top 10 for four of its remarkable 11 seasons. Along with "Good Times," "Sanford and Son," "Maude," "One Day at a Time" and "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear basically dominated the decade. It was a creative hot streak that's never been matched and one that Lear could never replicate.
After the 1978 premiere of "Diff'rent Strokes," Lear went ice cold. "The Baxters" and "Palmerstown, USA" only hung around for two seasons, while "Hanging In" and "aka...

John Amos is hoping to put the past behind him when it comes to recent family drama, noting that “all families go through trials and tribulations of some sort.” The Good Times star and his filmmaker son, K.C. Amos, recently spoke with People about their family struggles; earlier this year, the legendary actor accused his daughter, Shannon Amos, of “elderly abuse,” something which Shannon denied. “It is his sibling, that is my daughter, my first child. I love her. K.C. loves his sister. We just have, I guess, what might be best described in the tabloids is an acrimonious relationship, but everything heals in time, and the love is still there,” John told the publication. Back in June, Shannon started a GoFundMe page for her father, claiming he was a victim of “elderly abuse.” However, the page was later taken down after John and K.C. said the claims...

The animated series follows the Evans family in the present day as they navigate today’s world and contemporary social issues. As the original did, the new show will strive to remind viewers that with the love of family, everyone can keep their heads above water.
Smoove and Brown will play the show’s central couple, Reggie and Beverly, with Pharoah taking on the role of one of their sons, Junior.

TV giant Norman Lear, who died Dec. 5 at 101, leaves behind arguably the single most valuable body of work ever committed to the medium. On seminal series like All in the Family, Maude and The Jeffersons, Lear dared to tackle issues then considered unthinkable sitcom fodder — rape, abortion, homosexuality, racism, alcoholism — with a genius’ eye and ear for capturing their moral complexities while poking at the foibles of the American working class. These six episodes, however, stand out among the rest for having actively moved the needle on public opinion — and in doing so elevated Lear’s work from mere entertainment to timeless agitprop art.

The original series starred Esther Rolle, John Amos, Jimmie Walker, and Ja’net DuBois. The sitcom followed Rolle’s Florida Evans as she raised her family in a Chicago apartment building. The new animated series was green-lit by Netflix in 2020 with basketball star Steph Curry and Seth MacFarlane‘s respective production companies attached in addition to Lear’s Act III Prods. Norman Lear was a man of modest physical stature, standing a trim 5’7″ on a good day. In terms of his impact on television — comedy primarily, but the medium as a whole — he was a giant, who belongs on any Mt. Rushmore of showrunners. He dominated an entire decade of TV like no one before or since, with hit after hit that expanded the boundaries of what could be done with the old-fashioned multi-camera sitcom format (shot on a stage in front of a studio audience), and what kinds of stories and characters audiences would accept.

Pierce Brosnan looks unrecognizable as the D-Day veteran, Artie Crawford, for the upcoming Sky Cinema film, The Last Rifleman, in a newly released photo.
With the help of prosthetics and a gray wig, the 70-year-old actor had been given the appearance of a 92-year-old man.
Brosnan’s character wears a uniform covered in war medals while also using a walking stick.
The character was inspired by the experiences of the late Royal Navy Lieutenant Bernard Jordan.
In June 2014, this veteran became famous for escaping his care home at 89 years of age just so he could commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Normandy landings.
Jordan lied to the staff by stating that he was just “‘popping down to the shops.'”
He made it to France by taking a train at Brighton Railway station to Portsmouth before taking a ferry to France.

This is set for a quick opening next week streaming in the UK via Sky Cinema. Yet another super patriotic "look at what we did back then!" story about a WWII veteran – this film tells the exact same story as The Great Escaper with Michael Caine. I guess it's a story they really need to tell multiple times. A WWII veteran escapes his care home in Northern Ireland and embarks on an arduous but inspirational journey to France to attend the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings, finding the courage to face the ghosts of his past. The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.

The reports of the Good Times star’s hospitalization came from his daughter, Shannon Amos, who shared a GoFundMe page, claiming her father needed financial help to be cared for properly and bring the perpetrators of the elder abuse to justice. However, the Roots actor later refuted the claims that he was the victim of elder abuse and has now provided a further update on the situation. “To all of my fans, I want you to know that I am doing well. I am not in ICU, nor was I ever fighting for my life,” a representative for the actor shared with People. “First, I want the GoFundMe campaign about me to stop immediately and the funds subsequently...

Good Times actor John Amos is refuting claims that he’s the victim of elder abuse alleged by his daughter, Shannon Amos. While John is currently hospitalized, a GoFundMe page shared by Shannon Amos claims her father is in financial need in order to be cared for properly and bring the perpetrators to justice. In the page vying for donations, Shannon details a situation in which her father was unexpectedly hospitalized on May 14, and upon reaching his side at the Memphis, Tennessee location, she writes, “What we found shattered our world: my dad fighting for his life in the ICU.” She adds that in the following weeks, she and her family “unraveled a horrifying truth — my dad had fallen victim to elder abuse and financial exploitation.” (Credit: Courtesy of Everett Collection) She claims they’re cooperating with the Colorado Bureau of Investigations and the local Sheriff’s Department in her...

According to Shannon, her dad phoned her from a hospital in Memphis, saying he was in unspeakable pain. Out of the country at the time, Shannon quickly hooked up with her dad on FaceTime to learn more about the situation.

Aaron Sorkin‘s The West Wing is one of the most optimistic shows to air on television. From 1999 to 2006, President Josiah “Jed” Bartlet, played by the versatile veteran actor Martin Sheen, and his idealistic staff of deep thinkers presented the illusion that Capitol Hill was where the finest minds in America worked together to find the right answers, and got bonus points for the most self-righteous. The NBC series began the same year as HBO’s The Sopranos, and could be seen as its polar opposite, though the two shows had many similarities. Both were considered dramas, but had so many individual laugh lines they veered into comedy. Each featured a strong leader who faced crises, at home and abroad.
Starting with the very first episode, President Bartlet confronted beltway blowback, global dissension, and harsh life-threatening decisions. Some of these issues were personal, because a president’s private life affects the political process.

A new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series was released over the weekend, and with this one we took a look back at a film that came from two masters of the genre: George A. Romero and Dario Argento. The film is the 1990 anthology Two Evil Eyes (watch or buy it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above!
Scripted by Romero, Argento, and Franco Ferrini, Two Evil Eyes consists of adaptations of two separate Edgar Allan Poe stories, The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar and The Black Cat. The film has the following synopsis: George A. Romero provides unabated horror in “The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar”. As he lays dying, Ernest Valdemar’s scheming young wife and her lover anxiously await his demise – and his vast fortune. But when Ernest dies unexpectedly while under hypnosis,...

Ice Cube might have started out in the world of music. But the rapper has also become quit the established actor over the years, appearing in more than two dozen movies. In fact, Ice Cube reportedly carries a net worth of $160 million. However, early on, the rapper never thought he had a chance at landing a role in his film debut, the Oscar-nominated drama Boyz n the Hood.
‘Boyz n the Hood’ was Ice Cube’s first major breakthrough movie
The 1995 film Friday arguably established Ice Cube as a big-screen leading man. After all, he carried top billing on that hit comedy, which also catapulted Chris Tucker to stardom. And since then, he’s appeared in countless hits, including two Friday sequels, the Barbershop franchise, 21 Jump Street and its sequel, Ride Along and its sequel, and most recently, 2020’s The High Note.
But 1991’s Boyz n the Hood was something special.

In a career that has spanned six decades, John Amos has had memorable roles on acclaimed television shows like The West Wing and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. However, the show he’s probably best remembered for was part of Norman Lear’s stable of shows in the 1970s — Good Times, a show about a struggling Black family living in the inner city. When it started out, the show was remarkable for the way it dealt with real-life topics, which made Amos extremely proud to be a part of it. We’ve spoken to Amos many times over the years, and he explained to us why he loved the show so much early on, but why the catch phrase “Dy-no-mite” literally killed him on the show. (Click on the media bar below to hear John Amos) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Jamesamos-_-3.mp3 Though the show went on...

Middle-aged men acting stupidly has sadly become a cinematic staple in an era marked by the celebration of refusing to grow up as a way of life. Any doubts that the new Netflix comedy starring Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg will buck the trend are immediately dispelled in the opening moments featuring daredevil stunts (not performed by the stars, natch) and broad pratfalls that wouldn’t have been out of place in the silent era. Sadly, Me Time doesn’t get any more sophisticated from there.
Director/screenwriter John Hamburg (Along Came Polly, I Love You, Man) has long demonstrated a delight for finding humor in strong personality differences. "Every parent's dream is to spend a week without their family" Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for Me Time, a new comedy from writer / director John Hamburg. Who's ready for another absurd and crazy Kevin Hart Netflix project?? When a stay-at-home dad finds himself with some “me time” for the first time in years while his family is away, he reconnects with his former best friend for a wild weekend that nearly upends his life. Mark Wahlberg co-stars with Kevin Hart, and a huge ensemble cast including Regina Hall, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Jimmy O. Yang, plus John Amos, Anna Maria Horsford, Andrew Santino, Deborah S. Craig, Naomi Ekperigin, and Drew Droege. This looks so stupid, there's no way to not admit this about it, especially when they get into this wingsuit scene at the end. This is campy 90s crap that wasn't supposed to be in movies ...

Roots actors Louis Gossett Jr. and John Amos have looked back on the groundbreaking series on its 45th anniversary and commented that many cast members did not see a career boost despite the show’s success. Adapted from Alex Haley’s bestselling novel, Roots debuted on ABC in January 1977 and followed Kunta Kinte (Amos), an African man who is taken from his home and shipped to North America as a slave. The series was a hit, amassing huge ratings and taking home nine Emmy awards, as well as a Golden Globe and Peabody Award. While Gossett Jr went on to win a Best Supporting Oscar for his role in the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman, Amos says that many of the other Black actors did not see the same profile raise as Gossett or fellow co-star LeVar Burton, who played the young Kinte. “Roots” made TV history when it premiered on ABC 45 years ago, with more than half the country tuning in for the adaptation of Alex Haley’s bestselling novel about his enslaved ancestors.
