Beta Film has dropped the trailer for “Estonia,” a Scandinavian limited series about Europe’s deadliest civil maritime disaster.
The eight-part cinematic show, which is represented in international markets by Jan Mojto’s Beta Film (“Babylon Berlin”), charts the sinking of the Ms Estonia on Sept. 28, 1994, which killed over 850 people.
The series is directed by Swedish director Måns Månsson and Finnish director Juuso Syrjä. While the sinking of the ship is an important part of the show, “Estonia” also spotlights the tentacular probe launched in the aftermath of the tragedy by the Joint Accident Investigation Committee established by Sweden, Estonia and Finland.
Showrunner Miikko Oikkonen, who co-wrote the series with Olli Suitiala and Tuomas Hakola, said that when he “started to read the final report and went through the material, (he) realized the investigation itself was even more interesting than the accident.”

It’s pitch dark and stormy and Pelle Heikkilä, one of Finland’s biggest stars, is getting slammed by massive waves in a 10-meter-deep water tank.
The shoot of “Estonia,” a Scandinavian limited series about Europe’s deadliest civil maritime disaster, is underway in Belgium at an indoor water stage. The eight-part cinematic show, which is budgeted at €15 million (14.7 million) and is being shopped by Jan Mojto’s Beta Film (“Babylon Berlin”) at Mipcom, charts the sinking of the Ms Estonia on Sept. 28, 1994, which killed over 850 people.
The series is directed by Swedish director Måns Månsson and Finnish director Juuso Syrjä, who are polar opposites, one coming from festival-friendly auteur filmmaking, the other coming from high-end commercials.
Like the cast and crew of the series, the tragedy itself involved multiple countries, including Estonia, because it was an Estonian ship and departed from Tallinn; Sweden, because nearly half of the people...

"His story doesn't add up." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a new true crime series called The Unlikely Murderer from Sweden, about the infamous 1986 assassination of the Swedish prime minister. This will be available to watch on Netflix starting in November, including in the US for anyone curious to learn more about this event. The series focuses on a man named Stig Engström, who passed away in the year 2000. Nearly 20 years later, independent investigators and the police eventually named Engström as the lead suspect, but of course they can't do anything else now that he is dead. This series dramatizes how a man claiming to be a witness at the assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme may have gotten away with murder. Engström managed to elude justice right up to his death with a combination of audacity, luck, and a perplexed police force. Starring Robert Gustafsson as Stig Engström,...

Early in HBO’s Swedish-language adaptation “Beartown,” two people are running desperately through the snow. One is carrying a rifle, and the other is doing their best to avoid getting shot. Their faces are obscured, any telling identification avoided, but the chase ends with the hunter and prey isolated on a frozen lake, the latter kneeling in front of the former, before the image cuts to black just before a shot rings out.
Considering the audience learns both identities before the end of the second episode, this intense introductory scene isn’t meant to tease a mystery. “Beartown” is a blunt story, stocked with direct lessons. Still, it’s patient about revealing its thesis, and the life-or-death stakes set up from the get-go help to prepare the audience for when normal life in a small Swedish town turns very, very ugly. For a while, it may seem like “Beartown” will...

Netflix has ordered “The Unlikely Murderer,” a Swedish limited series based on Thomas Pettersson’s eponymous 2018 award-winning book.
The five-part drama series is a fictional interpretation of how Stig Engström, the graphic designer named as the suspected murderer of Sweden’s prime minister Olof Palme, managed to elude justice right up to his death through a combination of audacity, luck and a perplexed police force.
Engström’s murder was not planned well, he did everything wrong from the beginning and almost no one believed his lies about what he actually did during that fateful night in 1986 in Stockholm, Sweden. The series will question how police could have let the suspect get away, despite tracking him.
The series is written by Wilhelm Behrman and Niklas Rockström. Charlotte Brändström (“The Witcher”) is the conceptual director and will helm the first two episodes of the show.
The Swedish-language series will be produced by Flx,...

Throughout the film, the characters will communicate with each other primarily from behind a screen. The cast are filming their scenes one at a time and in the presence of a skeleton crew. For aeons, the Lycans and the Vampires have waged war with one another – a seemingly eternal battle that has, to date, fuelled four tentpole installments in the Underworld franchise. That latest entry in Screen Gems’ cult series, Awakening, didn’t fare terribly well with critics or fans, hence why the release of next year’s Underworld: Blood Wars is being held up as a return to form.
At least, that’s the idea. Acting as the directorial debut of franchise newcomer Anna Foerster, Blood Wars heralds the return of Kate Beckinsale as Selene, the age-old Vampire Death Dealer who wages war with just about everyone in sight in today’s first-look trailer. Unless you’ve done your homework on the Underworld lore, you’d be forgiven for feeling a little confused coming out of the sizzle reel, but it does tee up an intriguing dynamic between Beckinsale’s hardened lead...

Kate Beckinsale's return as Selene in Underworld: Blood Wars will now take place in the winter rather than the fall.
According to Box Office Mojo, Underworld: Blood Wars will be released by Screen Gems on January 6th, 2017. The film was previously slated to come out on October 14th, 2016.
A Lakeshore Entertainment film, Underworld: Blood Wars stars Beckinsale back in her role as the highly skilled vampire Selene, with Theo James once again playing David and Charles Dance returning as the vampire elder Thomas. Bradley James (Damien, iZombie) also plays a key role in the fifth Underworld film, which is directed by Anna Foerster from a screenplay by Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter, Priest):
"Theo James (The Divergent Series) returns as Selene’s ally David, reprising the role he played in Underworld: Awakening. British actors Tobias Menzies (“Outlander”, “Rome”) and Lara Pulver (“Sherlock”) take on the respective roles...

Kate Beckinsale is set to reprise her role as Selene in the dark new adventure, and there's no doubt that it's going to kick some ass because all the Underworld films have kicked ass.
Oh yeah, I also already got to see some footage from the film at CinemaCon! If you've enjoyed the prior Underworld movies, then this one is going to be a real treat. The footage we were shown was loaded with action and Selene is preparing for a new war. She sets out on a journey to find a special blood which will make her invincible.

Kate Beckinsale's fifth adventure as the Vampire Death Dealer Selene will be titled Underworld: Blood Wars. Co-producers Screen Gems & Lakeshore Entertainment made the announcement earlier today on the film's official Facebook page. Anna Foerster (Outlander) directed the feature, which wrapped principal photography earlier this year, with a script from Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter). Joining Beckinsale are Theo James, who reprises his role from the previous installment, Tobias Menzies (Outlander), Lara Pulver (Edge Of Tomorrow), Charles Dance (Game Of Thrones), Bradley James (iZombie), James Faulkner (Da Vinci's Demons), Oliver Stark (Into The Badlands), Peter Andersson (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), Clementine Nicholson, and Daisy Head (The Syndicate). The film will arrive in theaters just in time for Halloween on October 14, a week ahead of the Tom Cruise-starrer Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. There are also a few early rumors circulating that suggest a sixth film with Beckinsale is already being planned.

Welcome the Next Generation. Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment have formally announced that Underworld 5 will leap from the shadows and into theaters later this year bearing the title Underworld: Blood Wars. Series stalwart Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, a Death Dealer and a Vampire-Corvinus hybrid, when the long-gestating sequel opens on October 12, 2016.
Steering Screen Gems’ horror sequel toward a theatrical release is director Anna Foerster – best known for helming various episodes of both Criminal Minds and Outlander – and she’ll be overseeing a starry ensemble cast that comprises Tobias Menzies and Sherlock alum Lara Pulver as a formidable Lycan leader and tenacious vampire, respectively. Foerster is no stranger to the blockbuster space, though, having served as director of photography all across Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down.

Olivia Taylor Dudley is genuinely creepy as a woman possessed in this otherwise routine chiller
The devil may have all the best tunes, but he’s none too fussy about his scripts. The Vatican Tapes is a murky stew of satanic shenanigans that starts with the revelation that the Holy See has a secret archive documenting diabolic visitations. Its prime case history involves a young Los Angeles woman named Angela, who shows worrying symptoms of housing an evil presence – foul temper, a tendency to behave erratically in taxis and an ability to make hapless policemen do horrible things with lightbulbs. Before long, a specialist cardinal arrives from Vatican City, armed with holy water and the now-mandatory camcorders: he’s played by the glumly intoning Peter Andersson, a sort of pseudo Max von Sydow.

If you’re looking for a good horror movie this Halloween weekend, keep looking. The demonic-possession subgenre isn’t exactly one crammed with quality cinematic experiences, but with The Vatican Tapes, it hits a dull, unscary new low.
This is a movie so inept that it doesn’t even have a protagonist, so there is no focus for what little story there is. Is this the tale of Angela (Olivia Dudley [Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, Transcendence], who looks so much like Patricia Arquette here that I thought she must be a daughter or a cousin or something, but apparently not), who on her 25th birthday is suddenly taken over by Satan?...

You know the one about the young girl who gets possessed, nobody believes it, and someone of power has to perform an exorcism in the 3rd act? Sure you do. We get this movie or some variation therein, a few times a year. Sometimes it’s a demon, sometimes it’s a ghost, but it always ends up being roughly the same film outline. Popping bones and inhuman movement or contortion is a given, speaking in lounges, and there’s a fake out where you think the entity has left…But Not Yet! Before going any further I should say that yes, The Vatican Tapes is precisely one of these movies. The last time I caught one before this was last year’s Deliver Us from Evil, which came from Scott Derrickson. I didn’t care for that, but coincidentally Derrickson’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose was the last theatrical one I really enjoyed.

Mark Neveldine, best known for his wild collaborations with Brian Taylor (Crank/Gamer), is one of the most lovably renegade filmmakers in the game today. His daredevil dedication to achieving the perfect shot has been detailed by curious paparazzi members on numerous occasions, because when you see a director holding onto a motorcycle while wearing rollerblades, you tend to get a little curious. But his latest film, The Vatican Tapes, is a solo departure from those typically outrageous action stylings. There’s no need for high-speed filming techniques in this barely-found-footage exorcism thriller, as this religious shocker calls for a much more restrained lens. Possession plotlines require a low-and-slow handling – something Neveldine isn’t exactly used to doing.

Better the Devil You Show: Neveldine’s Solo Outing Can’t Quite Reach its Inner Demon
It’s hard to figure out who these religious themed horror films are made for. Director Mark Neveldine, stepping out on his own for the first time following four co-directed efforts with Brian Taylor (the team behind the Crank films and that Nicolas Cage sequel Ghost Rider), can’t seem to provide an answer with this derivative hunk of spiritually solicited scares, yanking plot points from ye classic films of yonder, like The Omen and The Exorcist, but whittled down to a palatable PG-13 rating for the kiddies. Those who are actually religious find these forays into devilish mayhem blasphemous or exploitational, while an increasing number of staunch non-believers need a bit more than the run-of-the-mill possession flick to be goaded into the thrill of a fantasy they don’t believe in anyway.
