Charles Addams' very first Addams Family comic strip -- or at least a proto-version of the Family -- appeared in the pages of the New Yorker in 1938. In the strip, a vampire-like woman stands next to a large, bearded, brutish man at the foot of a staircase in a haunted mansion. Bats fly overhead and spider webs adorn the light fixtures. A creepy third member of the family peers down through a railing high above. Standing at the door is an eager, white-suited vacuum cleaner salesman attempting to hawk his wares. "Vibrationless, noiseless, and a great time and back saver. No well-appointed home should be without it," the salesman says. He is unperturbed to be in a haunted house, and presses on with his sales pitch, even though the manse has clearly never been swept.
Charles Addams would revisit these creepy characters regularly, eventually settling on a core cast of characters.

Ah, "The Addams Family." They're creepy and they're kooky. Mysterious and spooky. They're all together ooky. And so on. The ghoulish Addamses were created by cartoonist Charles Addams in the pages of The New Yorker before Hollywood came calling, adapting Addams' comics into a TV series in 1964. The series followed a family of weirdos who live every day like it's Halloween, much to the confusion of the normal folks all around them. The original "The Addams Family" series lasted only two seasons, running between 1964 and 1966, but its impact and influence continued for decades.
Sadly, the majority of the original cast of "The Addams Family" are no longer with us. But there's one main player who is still around.

The NBC sitcom Night Court debuted 40 years ago — on January 4, 1984 — with newly instated judge Harry (Harry Anderson) showing his “irregular” side by ordering a feuding couple to a coffee date with their attorneys. And the show, which followed the eccentric staff at a Manhattan arraignment court, only got better from there, according to IMDb users who have rated the original run’s 193 episodes. In fact, none of the current Night Court revival’s episodes can compare to the top 10 episodes from the original, according to those user ratings. Here are those standout Night Court episodes — all of which are currently streaming on Prime Video — along with comments from IMDb reviewers. 10. Netflix is looking for ways to expand the universe of hit drama Wednesday, which reportedly involves developing a spin-off featuring Uncle Fester.
The Addams Family has been a perennial presence on the big and small screen since Charles Addams’ comics were adapted into the original television show in 1964.
Since then, there have been reunion television films and animated series, but the franchise arguably hit its peak in the 1990s with the release of feature films The Addams Family and it’s arguably even better sequel Addams Family Values.
Very few people talk about Addams Family Reunion which, although it features a scenery chewing turn from Tim Curry, failed to make an impact, much like The New Addams Family, the television series which followed soon after, which is only really worth watching for the episode where John Astin, the original Gomez, returns as Grandpapa Addams.

“They’re gonna put me in the movies,” Ringo Starr sang on The Ed Sullivan Show as the Beatles covered Buck Owens’ hit “Act Naturally.” The 1965 appearance featured songs from the group’s new film, Help!, director Richard Lester’s send-up of James Bond movies and other elements of spymania, as well as a follow-up to the greatest jukebox movie ever made, A Hard Day’s Night (1964). Both films put the rhythm up front. It was natural.
Prior to the nationally broadcast live performance, Starr prepared the audience by introducing himself as “all nervous and out of tune,” and smiled embarrassedly without missing or slowing a beat through his propulsive country swing. Starr was a natural performer, a locally famous beat-keeper in Liverpool before joining the Beatles, whose rhythm patterns had a character which set him apart from other drummers. His beats had personality. As the song says, he played the...

The Beatles altered the musical landscape with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and not just with the music. Its kaleidoscopic color-bomb collage cover stood in stark contrast to many albums of the era. It was the first album the Fab Four released after they stopped touring and put a nail into the coffin of Beatlemania that John Lennon wanted to hammer for years. Sgt. Pepper’s cover included dozens of famous faces in addition to John, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison. Ringo worked with two of them on notable projects outside of The Beatles.

William Dozier's 1966 TV adaptation of "Batman" remains, even at this late date, the high water mark for all Batman media.
Colorful, whimsical, surreal, and borderline kinky, "Batman" served as an arch satire of the conservative underpinnings of most mainstream comic book heroes. Batman and Robin, played by the legendary Adam West and Burt Ward, were depicted as simultaneously heroic and terminally square, eschewing vice and indecency in favor of painfully wholesome, all-American activities such as camping, chess, drinking milk, birdwatching, and engaging in proper hygiene. Batman and Robin were walking 1950s classroom scare films, living in a bizarre universe of costumed vigilantes and horny criminals. The brilliance of the show came largely from West and Ward, who were able to deliver some of the strangest dialogue ever written without once ever winking or cracking a smile. "Batman" is a comedy masterpiece.
Of course, the most appealing aspect of "Batman" were its villains.

It's almost impossible to talk about the original 1964 "The Addams Family" without mentioning the other 1964 television show that also features a family of outcasts: "The Munsters." During their heyday, both of these monster-centric sitcoms famously aired during the same time slot, but on different networks, forcing viewers to pick a side. If you were Team Addams, you most likely loved the macabre antics of Morticia and Gomez and their two odd children, Wednesday and Pugsley, but if you were Team Munster, you probably enjoyed your sitcom quirk with a little more actual monster to it.
"The Addams Family" — which is based on "The New Yorker" cartoon created by Charles Addams — depicts a family of outcasts who love all things dark and dangerous, whereas the Munsters are actual monsters —I.E. Frankenstein and Dracula and a werewolf son, oh my! — living relatively normal, suburban lives. These differences are at the heart...

Is there anything Jenna Ortega can’t do? In the new Netflix series, “Wednesday,” Ortega takes on the role of Wednesday Addams, and as part of her prep process, she had to learn how to play the cello. She also took on the role of a choreographer to execute one of the series’ most memorable moments.
Episode four, titled “Woe What a Night,” sees the students of Nevermore Academy, the school for outcasts, attend the Rave’N dance. Wednesday reluctantly attends with Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan). As The Cramps’ “Goo Goo Muck” plays, Wednesday takes to the dance floor and throws out her kookiest of moves.

Episode four, titled “Woe What a Night,” sees the students of Nevermore Academy, the school for outcasts, attend the Rave’N dance. Wednesday reluctantly attends with Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan). The Riddler: Year One is a unique, even historic comic book event. Not only is it a DC book that functions as a prequel to one of the biggest movies in the year in The Batman, telling the tale of how a put upon, socially awkward accountant eventually becomes a terrifying serial killer and Gotham City villain of note, but it’s written by the actor who played the character himself, Paul Dano. We spoke with Dano about how this book helped him utilize some of the backstory he had created in his mind when formulating his Riddler performance, and you can read that here (or listen to our full interview), but there’s one subtle piece of history tucked away in the book that ties it not only to the very first Riddler story ever, but even the Batman TV series of the 1960s.

"Normal" and "creepy" are relative terms, especially when discussing the mysterious, spooky, and altogether ooky Addams Family. First introduced in the pages of The New Yorker in 1938, Charles Addams' series of macabre and hilarious single-panel cartoons became the foundation for one of America's most popular — and most enduring — fictional families. Television shows and movies, both live-action and animated, have featured the family's morbid antics since 1964, with a new Netflix series debuting later this year.
If there's anything the Addams Family teaches us, it's that "normal" is in the eye of the beholder and that looks can be deceiving. At the same time, part of the fun of the Addams Family is that they allow us to get in touch with our own darkness, our own weirdness, and celebrate the creepier side of life. While there are many extended family members in the Addams clan, this list will stick to the major players,...

"The Goonies" is known for the vivacious energy of its young cast, including Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, and Ke Huy Quan. These "goonies," actually a group of kids who live in the blue-collar section of Astoria, Oregon, search for a legendary pirate's hidden treasure to save their homes from foreclosure. The adolescent ensemble brings a natural innocence and childhood wonder to the thrilling storybook adventure come to life.
The star of the film and Goonies ringleader is Mikey, played by Sean Astin. As the child of actors Patty Duke and John Astin, he was not unfamiliar with the inner workings of Hollywood, but "The Goonies" was his feature film debut. In Gizmodo, Sean Astin recalls the excitement of being the lead actor on such a large-scale project:
"[A]t the Warner Bros. lot ... they'd roll down the window and the guard would look at us and say 'Hey Sean.

In theory, producing a television series based on an existing comic or a comic strip should be easy. The storyboards are all done for you, right? That's until you realize that what took an artist a day to draw might be impossible to commit to the screen without a budget matching a small country's gross domestic product.
That said, there is certainly no shortage of attempts, and with the increasing availability and affordability of CGI, it's easier to convey an artist's ambitious and mind-blowing visuals than ever before. From barrel-chested George Reeves' first portrayal of the Man of Steel in 1952's "The Adventures of Superman" to Lewis Wilson donning the familiar (yet excessively pointy-eared) cowl of Batman in the 1943 serial "The Batman," many familiar characters have made the leap from page to screen.

While Batman has been an institution in popular culture since the 1930s, it wasn't until the 1960s that the character gained a good deal of traction in the popular consciousness, thanks primarily to the William Dozier-produced CBS TV show. And while Adam West and Burt Ward were the stars of the show, one of the more attractive gimmicks of "Batman" was the regular rotating retinue of celebrity cameos and guest villains. In addition to mainstays like Cesar Romero, Frank Gorshin, and Academy Award nominee Burgess Meredith, "Batman" also featured the likes of Milton Berle, Shelley Winters, Lesley Gore, Joan Collins, Liberace (as twin brothers!), Anne Baxter, John Astin and...

Barry Sonnenfeld leaped from hot cinematographer status to A- list director with this sure-footed big screen adaptation of the TV show based on Charles Addams’s marvelously morbid New Yorker cartoons. The cast is ideal: Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia complement TV’s Carolyn Jones and John Astin without inviting comparisons. Winning an imaginary award for making sick jokes safe for PG-13, the script has true wit. The characters have depth as well, which is wonderful. Daring to be out of step with the times, the elaborate production, costumes and special effects are all on the same page: director Sonnenfeld and producer Scott Rudin see to it that the goofy premise never wears thin. The 4K encoding is a dazzler.

Hello, dear readers! Before those of us in the States get ready to gobble down our Thanksgiving dinners later this week, we have a brand new batch of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases to look forward to first. One of this writer’s favorite films of all time, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is getting the 4K treatment from Kino Lorber this Tuesday, and Arrow Video is resurrecting both The Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch and Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge on Blu-ray as well (this is also very exciting news in my world). Arrow is also re-releasing a handful of other titles—The Cat O’ Nine Tails, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, and C.H.U.D.—and the first season of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery is headed to Blu-ray as well.

After indelible roles in The Lord Of Rings trilogy, Rudy and Goonies, Sean Astin is vying for a a new one. He’s declared his candidacy for the National Board of the Los Angeles Board of SAG-AFTRA and as a delegate. When I interviewed Astin recently for a 20 year look back on the uphill battle making Lotr, Astin mentioned his aspiration to do this, and the importance to him of living up to the legacy of his late mom Patty Duke, who served as SAG president from 1985-88. His father is the The Addams Family star John Astin.
“Fellow Members of #SagAftra, With 40 years of membership under my belt, it is time for me to serve. Remembering my mother, Patty Duke’s legacy as president of our union & with deep appreciation for her service, I respectfully ask for your vote,” he wrote in announcement of his candidacy. “I’m very proud,...

Richard Gilliland, a prolific actor who nearly 50-year career included Designing Women, Thirtysomething and series-regular roles on Just Our Luck, Operation Petticoat and Heartland, has died. He was 71. His family said he died March 18 in Los Angeles after an unspecified brief illness.

A new “Addams Family” live-action TV series could soon be coming to television.
Variety has confirmed with sources that MGM Television is developing a new series about the spooktacular family. “Into the Badlands” creators Alfred Gough and Milles Millar are attached to write the new series, while Tim Burton is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Gough and Millar would also serve as executive producers and showrunners.
No network or streaming service is currently attached, but given the highly-recognizable IP, the series would likely have little trouble finding a home.
If the show were picked up to series, it would mark one of the few television projects of Burton’s career. His previous TV work includes directing episodes of shows like “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” while he was also an executive producer on the animated series version of “Beetlejuice.” He is best known for his film work, helming critically-acclaimed features like “Edward Scissorhands,...

Paul Dano will likely play The Riddler in The Batman solo movie.
It's been a busy week or so in Gotham City, whether it was Zoe Kravitz's casting as Selina Kyle or Jonah Hill's departure from the role of the Riddler (or was it the Penguin? We sort all that out right here), there's been plenty of villainous casting activity afoot. But The Batman movie's impressive cast continues to take shape, with Paul Dano now apparently in line for the role of the Riddler. Variety were the first to report the news that Dano was in talks for the deal, and as with the Jonah Hill scenario, "the studio would not confirm the role" in question, but it's apparently the Riddler.
If this indeed happens, and we don't have another Hill situation where actor and studio can't come to terms, then Dano is a wonderful choice for the legendary Batman villain.

Jeffrey Wright and Jonah Hill are in talks to star in the upcoming film from director Matt Reeves, “The Batman,” according to new reports. The DC reboot will star Robert Pattinson, as already announced, as the caped crusader.
Wright is circling the role of Commissioner James Gordon, one of the Dark Knight’s most trusted allies in Gotham City. In the 1989 version of the film directed by Tim Burton, Gordon was played by Pat Hingle. In Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films — which brought a certain gravitas and real-world solemnity to the pop-colored comic book franchise — Gordon was played by Gary Oldman.
Jonah Hill, per Collider, is in talks to play The Riddler. He has previously been played in live-action by Frank Gorshin and John Astin in the 1960s “Batman” television series, Jim Carrey in the 1995 film “Batman Forever,” and Cory Michael Smith in the series “Gotham.”

Richard Erdman, a film and TV actor who made a long career as an affable sidekick and character actor, has died. He was 93 and no cause of death was given.

Other notable roles by Erdman included his stint as an alcoholic ex-Marine in Cry Danger, and Billy Wilder’s Stalag 17, where he played a barracks chief.
Erdman moved to Los Angeles in 1941, enrolling in Hollywood High School. He was offered a Warner Bros. contract and appeared in Mr. Skeffington and later as Scooper Nolan in Janie (1944). He made 30 films at Warners, including an appearance in The Time of Your Life...
