Richard Roundtree’s two-fisted detective tale burst on the scene announcing that a craze called Blaxploitation was on the way. No matter that the movie is somewhat slow and drab — John Shaft was the identification figure denied black audiences for 60 years, a hero who takes no guff from nobody and consistently tells The Man where to head in. Even bigger was the music theme by Isaac Hayes, which transforms Shaft’s casual stroll through Times Square into an iconic image of the 1970s. Criterion’s presentation of Gordon Parks’ smash hit has the original feature in 4K Uhd and in Blu-ray with the first sequel Shaft’s Big Score! in Blu-ray only.

Watch the brand new trailer for A Late Quartet starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, Catherine Keener, Mark Ivanir and Imogen Poots. The film will be in theatres November 2, 2012 and is having it’s world premiere tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival. I’m a huge fan of chamber music and I know a string quartet involves years of absorbing rehearsals and performances – I’ll be eager to see how the film plays out tonight at the festival and during the upcoming awards season. You can read The Hollywood Reporter’s review Here.

When we first meet New York hedge-fund magnate Robert Miller (Richard Gere) on the eve of his 60th birthday, he appears the very portrait of success in American business and family life. But behind the gilded walls of his mansion, Miller is in over his head, desperately trying to complete the sale of his trading empire to a major bank before the depths of his fraud are revealed. Struggling to conceal his duplicity from loyal wife Ellen (Susan Sarandon) and brilliant daughter and heir-apparent Brooke (Brit Marling), Miller’s also balancing an affair with French art-dealer Julie Cote (Laetetia Casta). Just as he’s about to unload his troubled empire, an unexpected bloody error forces him to juggle family, business, and crime with the aid of Jimmy Grant (Nate Parker), a face from Miller’s past. One wrong turn ignites the suspicions of NYPD Detective Michael Bryer (Tim Roth), who...

Filming on "Smash" Season 2 is underway and amidst all the changes behind and in front of the camera, it looks like one thing will remain: the scarves.
Series star Katharine McPhee was spotted filming in the New York City streets and she was decked out in a brand new scarf. Has the success of "Bombshell" earned Karen more money for a massive scarf collection?
Following Season 1, "Smash" underwent several changes. The cast was shaken up with the departure of Jaime Cepero (Ellis), Raza Jaffrey (Dev), Will Chase (Michael Swift) and Brian d'Arcy James (Frank). Meanwhile, new faces Krysta Rodriguez, "Newsies" star Jeremy Jordan and Andy Mientus have been added to the cast. Oscar winner and "American Idol" veteran Jennifer Hudson will also appear in Season 2 of the NBC series.
But the changes didn't stop at the cast. Creator and showrunner Theresa Rebeck left the series and was replaced by "Gossip Girl...

I honestly don't really care to spend any more time thinking about Smash than I have to, but since actually nothing non-Newsroom related has happened in the television world worth a solid write-up, we're going to have to return to this trash heap of a TV musical that new showrunner Josh Safran (Gossip Girl) is so desperately trying to salvage. His two latest moves: 1) Vulture reports that Safran has hired a brand new costume designer to revamp the show's entire wardrobe, and Joseph Aulisi should be able to use some of that experience on the Charlie's Angels films to make Julia look like a hot sex kitten, which will be entertaining because What. And 2) TVLine says that broke Brooklyn dude we talked about before has been cast, and he'll be handled by Broadway star Andy Mientus, a kid with a passion for writing for Broadway and another passion for what lies in between Karen's thighs,...

"Smash" is beefing up it Season 2 cast. Stage actor Andy Mientus has joined the NBC musical drama as a new series regular, according to TVLine.
Mientus will play Kyle, a Brooklynite writer with Broadway dreams. The new character will be best buds with another new addition, Jeremy Jordan's new character, Jimmy.
Kyle and Jimmy aren't the only new characters. Oscar winner and "American Idol" Jennifer Hudson will appear in multiple episodes as Veronica Moore, a Tony-winner who comes into the lives of Karen (Katharine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Hilty).
Season 2 of "Smash" will definitely look different from Season 1. Original cast members Jaime Cepero (Ellis), Raza Jaffrey (Dev) and Brian d'Arcy James (Frank) will not return in a regular capacity. But D'Arcy James confirmed he'll return for at least one episode.
Behind the scenes, "Smash" is also going through some changes. "Gossip Girl" executive producer Josh Safran has replaced Theresa Rebeck...

Things are looking up for Smash. Really. Just a few months ago, we cried out over Debra Messing’s horribly dowdy wardrobe. Now the series’ Powers That Be have answered.Vulture has learned that among the major changes happening to the NBC drama under new showrunner Joshua Safran is this: A new costume designer has been hired to revamp the wardrobe and, yes, abolish Julia’s unnecessary reliance on scarves. (It’s the least Safran could do as the former longtime executive producer of fashion-forward Gossip Girl, isn’t it?) New guy Joseph Aulisi knows how to sex things up, too. His credits include the Charlie’s Angels films and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway. When Smash returns next year a second musical will get under way, Jennifer Hudson will enter the mix (McPheever versus J.Hud — which Idol will reign supreme?), and Julia’s fam and nemesis Ellis will be no more.

Coming your way in limited release on September 23rd, A Bird of the Air is a quirky, indie number that looks as charming as anything to come along in a while. Centered around a loner who finds a parrot, and embarks on a mission to return the bird to its rightful owner, it's a kind of quest film that spins out of control.
If the trailer is any real indication, my money is on this one coming together into a very solid effort, and one that I think many will find themselves watching again and again.
Below check out some more info, the trailer, and a few images, and find out if this one will make appearance near you.

I had a fantastic time meeting the main cast of "Taking Woodstock." And the film is equally thought-provoking (I'll post my review very soon!).
Directed by Ang Lee ("Brokeback Mountain," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") and based on a book by Elliot Tiber called "Taking Woodstock: A True Story of A Riot, A Concert, and A Life," the film is a bittersweet look at the event that changed pop culture forever.
So take a trip with "Taking Woodstock" when it opens this Friday, August 28.
Now, here are my interviews:
