The giant gramophone scene in “The Color Purple” was the film in microcosm for director Blitz Bazawule. That’s the transformational moment where Celie (Fantasia Barrino) imagines being atop an enormous record that rotates on the turntable around her new best friend, Shug (Taraji P. Henson), soaking in a bathtub. It’s beautifully underscored by Celie singing “Dear God – Shug.”
This served as Bazawule’s entry point for his new version of “The Color Purple,” adapted from the Broadway musical (itself based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel), through the magical realism of Celie’s imagination. It was also his crucial pitch for enticing a hesitant Barrino to play Celie on screen after putting her triumphant yet painful portrayal on Broadway behind her.
The pitch worked: It convinced Barrino of an untapped interior world still left to be explored inside Celie’s head. Together they found inspiration for re-imagining...

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. But before we get too ahead of ourselves by predicting who might win this category, let’s take a look back at the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Production Design.
We’re going to take a look at the academy’s tastes here to see what type of films in what type of setting they nominate most. Then, we’ll try to apply those findings to this year’s race as we scrutinize the movies hoping for a nomination in this design category. Here we go.
These 10 winners seem like totally different movies but a closer look does show some similarities. Firstly, seven out of the 10 are set in the real world. “The Shape of Water...

“The Color Purple” director Blitz Bazawule hesitated to take on the latest incarnation of Alice Walker’s sacred text. However, when he revisited the book, the first line struck him as a way to navigate a familiar story and “keep expanding Celie’s imagination.”
In the new musical movie adaptation, as Celie (Fantasia Barrino) is bathing Shug (Taraji P. Henson), an old record plays on a gramophone in the background. But as the camera zooms in, the record player becomes a stage for Celie to express herself and her emotions. In a two-hour storyboard video film, the director had pre-visualized how Celie’s imagination would be integral to every aspect of bringing “The Color Purple” back to life.
Bazawule was speaking at Variety‘s Artisans Screening Series, where he was joined by editor Jon Poll, costume designer Francine Jamison-Tanchuck, production designer Paul D. Austerberry, cinematographer Dan Laustsen, makeup department head Carol Rasheed,...

The “A Bold New Take” behind the scenes featurette from The Color Purple begins with producer Oprah Winfrey saying, “There’s nothing that’s been more vital to me culturally, artistically, than The Color Purple.” Interviews with the cast , including Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, and Taraji P. Henson, and director Blitz Bazawule describe the importance of the story and why it’s still incredibly relatable.
Fantasia Barrino stars as the adult Celie, with Phylicia Pearl Mpasi playing the young Celie. Halle Bailey plays young Nettie, Ciara is adult Nettie, Danielle Brooks plays Sofia, Taraji P. Henson stars as Shug Avery, and Colman Domingo stars as Mister. Corey Hawkins is Harpo, H.E.R. is Squeak, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is Mama.

Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.
With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. They love biopics in the acting categories, for example, so what are they partial to in Production Design? Take a look at the below chart.

The Oscars for design — Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling — are often awarded together to reward movies that have excelled in their costume creations, set building, and distinct makeup work. “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won all three while “Black Panther” won both Costume Design and Production Design. Those two are fantasy films, which is a leading genre in the design categories. But period pictures, historical epics, sci-fi flicks, and even distinct contemporary films have also done well in these races.
With that in mind, here’s a breakdown of the eight films we expect to be the strongest contenders across the three categories.
“Barbie”
Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. The trailers have flaunted pretty pastels and plastics in both the sets and the costumes and the full film does not disappoint. The legendary Jacqueline Durran is in...

Despite sporting a running time (no pun intended) of over two and a half hours, The Flash manages to provide the character with a solid and satisfying stand-alone adventure that does the property justice.
The DC Extended Cinematic Universe (Dcecu) is expanded exponentially when Barry Allen (aka The Flash) travels back in time to “correct” certain events in his past. This inadvertently creates a cascading butterfly effect that threatens the reality that Barry finds himself trapped in – a world without heroes – in which General Zod (Michael Shannon) is on the verge of conquering. That is, unless Barry can convince Batman to don his cowl once again to liberate a certain incarcerated Kryptonian (albeit not the one he is expecting).
Director Andy Muschietti’s film retains the somberness of his previous offerings in the horror genre – Mama (2013), It (2017), and It Chapter Two (2017) – however, it also manages to overcome many of the...

Ezra Miller will continue being the Flash as long as director Andy Muschietti is involved in the Warner Bros. superhero franchise. During an interview on “The Discourse” podcast, Muschietti said he has no plans to recast Miller despite the actor’s history of legal troubles and alleged abuse.
“If [a sequel] happens, yes,” Andy Muschietti said about having Miller back as the Flash in a potential sequel. “I don’t think there’s anyone that can play that character as well as they did. The other depictions of the character are great, but this particular vision of the character, they just excelled in doing it. And, as you said, the two Barrys – it feels like a character that was made for them.”
“The Flash” producer Barbara Muschietti added, “In principal photography, Ezra was brilliant and the most committed and the most professional [actor]. Ezra gave everything for this role – physically, creatively, emotionally. They were absolutely supreme.

The hype for the upcoming Dceu film The Flash is electric, with people saying it’s one of the best outings coming from the DC universe. Promotion for the movie is in full swing, and the film’s stars, Michael Keaton and Michael Shannon, have been talked respectively about their roles being reprised in the multiverse/time travel film. Unfortunately, there is an uncomfortable element to deal with where The Flash star Ezra Miller has become a major liability with many criminal charges being filed.
Though Miller may be sitting out with the press during promotion, other cast members face an inevitable line of questions where they may be asked their opinions or their knowledge of the dark cloud over the film. Cbr is reporting on Michael Shannon’s recent comments responding to Miller’s controversy. “I thought Ezra was lovely—very kind to me when I was there. It’s difficult to talk about,...

It’s been a long and grueling road to get to The Flash solo movie. Ever since the film adaptation of Barry Allen made his debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice back in 2016, there has been anticipation for either the origin story or solo film for The Flash both prior to and after Justice League. The time has finally come, but the journey has been mired in controversy. The hype for the upcoming The Flash has been primarily positive, and many agree it is one of the best Dceu films ever made, but no other claim has been as bold as one made by the movie’s production designer, Paul Austerberry.
According to Cbr, Austerberry claims Ezra Miller’s performance is so good that people will forget about all the negative press surrounding the film’s star that has been a dark cloud over this release for the last couple of years.

As Warner Bros. gears up to release “The Flash” in theaters this summer, many moviegoers are wondering how star Ezra Miller’s history of legal troubles and alleged abuse might impact the release and press tour. The film’s production designer, Oscar winner Paul Austerberry (“The Shape of Water”) isn’t sweating it. During a recent interview with CBC, Austerberry said “people will forget” Miller’s history when the film releases.
As reported by the CBC: “Austerberry says he’s not too concerned about how the stories surrounding Miller will affect the film. ‘People will forget that,’ he said, noting that Miller did a superb job playing the titular hero as two distinct characters, which required production to shoot the film in ‘two different chunks,’ with Ezra switching roles every few days.”

Producer Oprah Winfrey introduced the first trailer for Warner Bros.’ The Color Purple, based on Alice Walker’s book and the musical adaptation of the novel.
Presenting this “celebration of sisterhood” billed as “not your mama’s Color Purple,” she asserted Tuesday at CinemaCon that The Color Purple “can only be experienced on the big screen” and committed to help to “get the groups in the seats. There’s coming” when the movie opens on Dec. 25. She described the project as having “magicial realism. wholesome family goodness” and and amazing cast.
Winfrey was joined on stage by director Blitz Bazawule and stars Fantasia Taylor (who plays Celie), Taraji P. Henson (Shug) and Danielle Brooks (Sophia).
“I started this journey with the upmost respect for you and Alice Walker,” Bazawule told Winfrey, adding “at it’s core it’s about finding your voice, you family and breaking through obstacles that try to hold you down.

Best Foreign Language Feature winner “All Quiet on the Western Front” won the Oscar crafts battle Sunday night, grabbing three prizes out of six for cinematography, production design, and score. That ties “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” for the most craft Oscar wins for an international feature. Edward Berger’s World War I epic from Netflix was also nominated for makeup/hairstyling, sound, and VFX.
Shockingly, Baz Luhrmann’s delirious musical biopic, “Elvis,” was blanked after also receiving six nominations, highlighted by Mandy Walker’s cinematography and the costume and production design of four-time Oscar winner Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!”). It was a particularly missed opportunity for Walker to break the glass ceiling again after her historic ASC victory. She represents only the third woman Dp to be nominated, following Ari Wegner (last year’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Rachel Morrison (2018’s “Mudbound”).

The 95th Academy Awards are going to be a nailbiter above and below the line. Nominated for Best Production Design are “Babylon,” “Elvis,” “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” and “The Fabelmans.” The Critics Choice, Art Directors Guild and BAFTA Awards have all picked “Babylon,” thereby positioning it as the frontrunner to win the Oscar.
However, the divisive Old Hollywood epic’s liabilities, as well as the strengths of its competitors, leave other possibilities open to consideration. For one, we could see the third instance of a corresponding Best Production Design/Best Cinematography win this decade, which excludes “Babylon” and permits only an “Elvis” or “All Quiet on the Western Front” victory. Even though the data doesn’t favor the remaining two nominees, “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “The Fabelmans,” their quality alone makes a compelling case. Here are my arguments for, and against,...

Check out the stellar new trailer for The Flash.
Directed by Andy Muschietti, Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film.
Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?...

Fun fact: The last time a Best Picture Oscar winner also scored a craft victory was Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” which took home awards for Paul Austerberry’s production design and Alexandre Desplat’s score in 2018. Which means that Best Picture winners “Coda” (no craft nominations) “Nomadland”, “Parasite”, and “Green Book” (editing) all left empty-handed as far as craft wins.
But look for the five-year craft drought to end if frontrunner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” wins Best Picture. As part of its Oscar-leading 11 nominations, it captured craft nods for costume design, editing, score, and song. It certainly has momentum on its side as the populist favorite. In addition to Best Picture, it’s a serious above-the-line contender for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (the Daniels), Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), and Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan...

In addition to Best Picture, it’s a serious above-the-line contender for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (the Daniels), Best Actress (Michelle Yeoh), Best Supporting Actress (Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu), and Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan...

The sequel to the highest-grossing horror film of all time just got one step closer to its release. At Wednesday night’s ScareDiego event — held a half-mile from where San Diego Comic-Con commences Thursday — New Line Cinema showed an early, behind-the-scenes look at “It: Chapter Two.”
The film is based on the second part of Stephen King’s best-selling 1986 novel, in which evil clown Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) preys on Derry, Maine once every 27 years. “It: Chapter Two” will introduce audiences to the ragtag Losers Club as grown friends who have lost touch and are pushing 40. Jaeden Lieberher, Wyatt Oleff, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Chosen Jacobs, and Jack Dylan Grazer will reprise their roles, with James McAvoy, Andy Bean, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, and James Ransone playing their respective adult counterparts. Among the other new additions are two veterans from this year’s Best Picture Oscar winner,...

Principal photography has begun on New Line Cinema’s “It Chapter Two,” director Andy Muschietti’s follow-up to 2017’s critically acclaimed and massive worldwide box office hit “It,” which grossed over $700 million globally. Both redefining and transcending the genre, “It” became part of the cultural zeitgeist as well as the highest grossing horror film of all time.
Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, “It Chapter Two” brings the characters—who’ve long since gone their separate ways—back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film. Bill Skarsgård returns in the seminal role of Pennywise. The 90th Annual Academy Awards were held on Sunday night, March 4, hosted for the second year in a row by Jimmy Kimmel. The Emmy winning comedian and host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” impressed with his hosting duties in 2017, but that ceremony is probably best remembered for its twist ending: “La La Land” was announced as the winner for Best Picture, but minutes later it was revealed that the wrong winner had been announced and that “Moonlight” was the rightful victor. Was the 2018 Best Picture outcome just as shocking? Scroll down for our live updating report and analysis of the winners as they happened.
“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was the front-runner for Best Picture going into Oscar night after winning top prizes at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards and BAFTAs. But close behind was “The Shape of Water,” the winner at the Producers Guild, Directors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards.

With PGA and Critics Choice wins, “The Shape of Water” is peaking just before Tuesday’s Oscar nominations. And, thanks to its surreal, period trappings, Guillermo del Toro’s inclusive love story will dominate the craft nominations, with as many as eight to be had, which would tie “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Following close behind will be Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049.” But the biggest crafts story will be if Asc nominee Rachel Morrison also becomes the first female cinematography nominee for Dee Rees’ “Mudbound,” And it will be noteworthy if the production and costume designing team of Sarah Greenwood and Jacqueline Durran score double nominations for their work on “Beauty and the Beast” and “Darkest Hour.”

After a decade of bringing his personal style and sensibility to larger studio movies like “Crimson Peak,” “Pacific Rim,” and the “Hellboy” series, Guillermo del Toro wanted to return to the smaller, more personal fables he created with “The Devils’s Backbone” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.”
While Del Toro’s fables don’t have the elaborate action scenes and the sprawling canvases of his franchises, they are every bit as dependent upon his visual storytelling and world-building skills. To make “Shape of Water,” del Toro put up $100,000-plus of his own money and, with a small team of collaborators, designed the world of his amphibian love story before pitching it to financiers.
“This is the reverse of what I did on ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’” said del Toro. “Instead of pitching for the three years, trying to find the money, I developed for about two years the look of the movie...

If you think it's high time that Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro joined fellow Mexican auteurs Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant) in the Oscar winners circle, The Shape of Water just may be the movie to do it. Every day, more and more films are added to the various streaming services out there, ranging from Netflix to YouTube, and are hitting the airwaves via movie-centric networks like TCM. Therefore, sifting through all of these pictures can be a tedious and often times confounding or difficult ordeal. But, that’s why we’re here. Every week, Joshua brings you five films to put at the top of your queue, add to your playlist, or grab off of VOD to make your weekend a little more eventful. Here is this week’s top five, in this week’s Armchair Vacation.
5. The Liberator (Netflix)
While the idea of the historical epic has the ability to turn off a few cinephiles, this is a real gem of a film. From director Alberto Arvelo, The Liberator follows the story of one Simon Bolivar, with beloved Venezuelan thespian Edgar Ramirez in that very role.

You probably already know how this story ends. At least, if you were paying attention in history class. But as with any disaster movie, especially one based on historical events like "Pompeii," knowing how things end doesn't make watching how they get there any less exciting. Especially not with Paul W.S. Anderson directing (in 3D no less).
Set in 79 A.D., "Game of Thrones" star Kit Harington plays Milo, a slave-turned-gladiator who must fight to save both himself and Cassia, the woman he loves (Emily Browning), as Mount Vesuvius erupts and the city of Pompeii crumbles around them. And with a corrupt Roman Senator (Kiefer Sutherland) also vying for Cassia's affection, Milo has a lot more than just lava to contend with.

Austrian Academy Award Winning (The Counterfeiters) director Stefan Ruzowitzky, whose previous work includes the Franka Potente-starring horror Anatomy and it’s well-received sequel some three years later (two films I rather enjoyed) turns his hand to the heist movie with Deadfall.

Twilight's leading man Robert Pattinson reckons viewers will be "shocked" with the new film, Eclipse, directed by 30 Days Of Night filmmaker David Slade.

"Even though the love triangle developed in New Moon, it's much more present in Eclipse. Edward really has to fight with Jacob and feels like he has to prove himself to Bella."
