Following the death of actor Fred Ward, several of his former costars, including Kevin Bacon, Matthew Modine, Lou Diamond Phillips, Richard E. Grant, and Kate Mulgrew, shared their memories of working with the charmingly gruff star.
Bacon shared a photo of himself and Ward from the 1990 cult hit “Tremors,” writing, “So sad to hear about Fred Ward. When it came to battling underground worms I couldn’t have asked for a better partner. I will always remember chatting about his love of Django Reinhardt and jazz guitar during our long hot days in the high desert. Rest In Peace Fred.” The two reunited in 2018 for a “Tremors” TV pilot that sadly was not picked up.

Could director Walter Hill's Southern Comfort be one of the most underrated thrillers of the 80s? Samantha takes a look back...
Southern Comfort must be one of the most underrated of thrillers. Uncomfortably tense and undeniably menacing, this film masterfully leaves us on edge from start to finish. But apart from the atmosphere and tension it creates so well, this is a distinctive film that stays with you long after you’ve seen it. There’s an undercurrent to the story that’s unavoidable, making Southern Comfort an intriguing and very clever film that undoubtedly deserves far more recognition in cinema history.
Set in 1973 in the bayous of Louisiana, a squad of National Guards incur the anger of the local Cajun people while on a training exercise and end up having to fight for their survival as they are hunted through the swamps.

Southern Comfort
Stars: Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, Fred Ward, Franklyn Seales, T.K. Carter, Lewis Smith, Peter Coyote, Alan Autry, Brion James, Sonny Landham | Written by Michael Kane, Walter Hill, David Giler | Directed by Walter Hill
There is something about Walter Hill’s style of storytelling that just gets me. I’m a big fan of The Warriors, even though it took me long enough to finally see the film. Once I finally got to see it though it turned into one of my favourite films. Southern Comfort is a film very much like The Warriors, written and directed by Hill it very much mirrors the style with a group of men out of their element and fighting for survival, though the city and the bayou are two very different “jungles”.

I enjoy all four of the House films because they strike a chord with me from my wonder years, but Steve Miner’s original has to be my favorite. The movie came out of left field in 1986 and became a box-office hit and a fan favorite. Almost three decades later, egad!, it is still a blueprint on how to make a great horror-comedy. Suffice to say, it is a true Late Night Classic.
For those of you wondering what is the deal with House III (The Horror Show), the answers are right here.
Jason Bene: The story for House was written by your pal Fred Dekker. What kind of changes, if any, did you have to make for the final script?
Ethan Wiley: Fred and I were roommates at UCLA and we had worked together on various plays, short films, and we even wrote my stand-up comedy routines together.
