My love of horror films dates back forty years. In the fall of 1986, I accidentally stumbled across an aficionado’s bonanza – a local video store had hundreds of video posters in the cabinets underneath the movies it was renting. One of the posters was for Mortuary (1983), a horror film from the Vestron Video label that I knew of from another video store but had not seen. I liked the poster art but knew nothing of the film. To my recollection, it never played at area theaters, not even the 2-screen indoor/drive-in three miles from me that showed just about anything that was low-budget and esoteric.
Mortuary opened on Friday, September 2, 1983 in Los Angeles and is not a great movie, but it is not terrible, either. It does, however, move at a snail’s pace, so be forewarned if you have not seen it.

Do you think that when Bill Paxton auditioned for the role of Paul Andrews in the Howard Avedis classic, Mortuary, that he realized that he would become one of the best known polygamist on the planet? Further more did he realize that he would become iconic as the whiny, outspoken, utterly quotable but almost detestable type cast antagonist in more than one picture from the 80′s? Only Kelly Lubrock knows for sure (Lips!). Make a right onto memory lane, then turn right (spoken in the voice of a true Gps).

Throughout her 50-year career, renaissance blonde Connie Stevens has been a popular star of movies and TV as well as a recording artist and founder of a hugely successful cosmetics empire. Now with the new film Saving Grace B. Jones, Ms Stevens can add movie director and screenwriter to her list of accomplishments. But I’ll always remember Ms Stevens fondly for a movie she starred in in the mid 70’s. It may not be her proudest moment but the 1976 movie Scorchy is an entertaining action-adventure in which Connie starred as a sexy undercover drug agent who will stop at nothing to break up a violent narcotics-smuggling ring. Scorchy was a fun, if not particularly good, movie aimed squarely at drive-in audiences who like their action spiced with a touch of sexploitation but Scorchy is Not currently available on DVD.
