What I like most about the annual Black List is that there isn't any favoritism according to the projected financial size of a screenplay. For fun, you could scan down any list since its inception and you'll find equal parts indie/Sundace/small budget and studio/multiplex/limitless budgets. If you look at the price tag for 2007's top screenplay (Recount) and say picks #14 and #15 which have a budget that range somewhere between 50 to 100 times more. Here are updates on picks 15 to 11 of 2007. 15. Edwin A. Salt (Votes: 11) Writer: Kurt Wimmer Status: Released July 23, 2010. An already established writer, I'm sure Kurt Wimmer was somewhat surprised that he'd have to re-tailor his original screenplay to switch the gender of the lead role. Columbia Pictures coined the new version Salt, and had Phillip Noyce direct Angelina Jolie, who took on the newly named character of Evelyn Salt. Released July 23rd this year, the...

If you’ve seen a trailer for Salt, then it’s likely you know too much about this film. Though, even if you’ve somehow escaped the movie’s terrible trailer, Salt doesn’t give audiences very much to cheer for. With a cartoonish plot, an unsympathetic main character and overly convenient plot devices, Salt takes itself far too seriously. A spy movie without suspense is like a romantic comedy without a silly misunderstanding or a slasher film where a good-looking teen victim is merely punched in the nose. Without suspense, the entire film will just hobble down its lifeless path en route to a grave sin for the genre: a predictable ending.

On July 23, 2007, Erik shared some news: Tom Cruise was circling a project called Edwin A. Salt, about a CIA officer on a mission to prove his innocence after accusations that he's a Russian sleeper spy. But soon the tides turned. Cruise left and Angelina Jolie took his place. Yes, Edwin A. Salt became Evelyn Salt, and Ms. Jolie joined an action film that would not only be marketed on the sheer power of her name -- a rare thing for the women of Hollywood -- but would also pay her $20 million plus a slew of ancillary benefits.
Her big-screen butt-kicking finally hits theaters this week, and The Hollywood Reporter says she's jolting the "man's world" of action films. In fact, they equate this cinematic sex change with the "groundbreaking" decision to adapt one of the white leads in Beverly Hills Cop so that it could star a fresh-faced Eddie Murphy.

There are few women who command as much of a presence on screen or in Hollywood as Angelina Jolie, one of the primary female forces venturing into the action territory once dominated by men. There's no better proof of this statement than her new movie Salt , the conspiracy action thriller that reunites the actress with director Phillip Noyce ( Clear and Present Danger , Patriot Games ). Originally called "Edwin A. Salt," it was meant to be about a male CIA agent who gets caught up in a conspiracy involving Russian sleepers agents. In fact, Tom Cruise had been attached for many years, and after he dropped out to make Knight and Day , various actors were considered before the filmmakers thought, "Why does this character need to be a man?" Whoever came up with...

Five years ago, the character Edwin A. Salt was a badass CIA agent in the vein of Jason Bourne or a new iteration of James Bond. Producers shopped the script — titled, predictably enough, "Edwin A. Salt" — to the studios, hoping to entice an A-list actor to sign up for some explosion-filled action. But they came up short.
Then, for awhile in 2007, Tom Cruise was circling the role, but still, the project never shifted into production. Eventually the team switched gears ... drastically.

Is Angelina Jolie a Russian spy? An American spy posing as a Russian spy? A blond or a brunette? Extremely attractive or attractive in the extreme? In the new Salt trailer, the answer seems to be All of the Above.
This trailer covers some of the same ground as the extensive teaser that debuted back in November, but steps it up, playing with time, making Salt even more of an enigma, and teasing some of the deeper conspiracies at work. Check it out in high-def at Apple or below:
In a way, Salt is like the mirror image of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz’s Knight and Day: both star-driven summer action flicks, but one is played for laughs while the other is deadly serious. (See that trailer here.) Interestingly, Cruise was originally attached to Salt — when the character’s name was Edwin A. Salt, not Evelyn Salt — before...

Its been a big day for trailers as Columbia Pictures has released the second and first full trailer for the spy thriller Salt, starring Angelina Jolie. I am really looking forward to this movie as it was one of the top 10 movies we are looking forward to this summer but also it looks like a lot of fun and Angelina Jolie is just awesome in these roles. I love her blonde hair too.
The premise for the film is Angelina Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA officer who is suspected of being a Russian sleeper spy. Salt must go on the run to try and clear her name with her mentor, Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber), her friend and colleague hot on her trail with his new partner, a CIA agent named Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor) she must out smart them at every turn.

When Kurt Wimmer’s (Equilibrium) script for Salt was originally picked up by Columbia Pictures, Tom Cruise was attached for the lead. However, scheduling conflicts or it’s resemblance to Mission: Impossible caused him to take a walk, leaving the role wide open for Angelina Jolie.
A few gender tweaks were all they needed to turn this Cold War thriller into an action vehicle for a strong woman. Having read the script, audiences are in for one hell of an awesome flick in July 2010.
The trailer indicates there have been some changes since Wimmer’s draft, which received rewrites by Brian Helgeland (Oscar winning screenwriter of Mystic River). For example, a key assassination attempt is shown as an explosion rather than the sniper operation described in the script’s quickly-turning pages. But it’s clear from the trailer that one thing remains as the core element in the film: this...

There’s no doubt about it, next summers female action star is Evelyn Salt, played by non other than Angelina Jolie as she takes a break from her Oscar roles to break out the badass once again. Directed by Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games), Salt centers on Evelyn Salt, a secret agent accused of being a double agent who must do everything she can to stay ahead of her pursuers.
Written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) and Brian Helgeland (Man on Fire), Salt co-stars Live Shreiber (X-men Origins: Wolverine) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Serenity) and is scheduled to hit theaters in July of 2010.
Thanks to Yahoo, we bring you the trailer for this action packed spy-fest. Enjoy.

If you recall, the espionage thriller Salt was at one time to be centered around a male lead and be titled Edwin A. Salt. That male lead was to be Tom Cruise. When he stepped out of the role, the male lead turned to female and in stepped Angelina Jolie. Goodbye Edwin A., hello Evelyn. This left us with only Salt, about a CIA operative on the run and out to clear her name from accusations of being a Russian spy involved in a plot to assassinate the President of the United States.

Philip Noyce ("The Quite American," "Catch a Fire") is directing the actress who stars as a CIA officer accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy and must elude capture long enough to establish her innocence.

Once upon a time, Tom Cruise was going to star in an espionage thriller that had him getting into some heavy action Mi-style. But that didn't last long and Mr. Edwin A. Salt got a sex change and a sexy new lead with Angelina Jolie. One would think the Edwin A. would become Edwina and all would be well, but now the character is Evelyn Salt, the movie is Salt, and you can check out the first teaser trailer after the jump.
Salt focuses on a CIA officer who's in for a shock when a Russian captive tells her that a Russian agent will head to Manhattan to kill the president. The spy's name: Evelyn Salt. Rather than let her co-workers detain her, she escapes, striving to prove that she's no spy. She's a patriot. "Using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative, she must elude...

Remember back when we reported that Angelina Jolie was coming on to the project known as Salt, taking over for Tom Cruise and forcing a re-write of the script to change the title character's name from Edwin A. Salt to Evelyn A. Salt? This is that film, and it doesn't look half bad. Essentially, this trailer shows the film to be Jason Bourne, but with a way better body. Evelyn Salt (Jolie) is a CIA officer who swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. When she is accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy, Salt goes on the run to clear her name and ultimately prove she is a patriot. Using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative, she must elude capture and protect her husband or the world's most powerful forces will erase any trace of her existence. It's clear that this would've been a cool role for...

While some films can't get off the ground no matter what big, impressive names get attached, others just can't die. The Tourist seems to be one of the latter. Once a possible starring vehicle for Tom Cruise, the picture carried on when he bailed; Sam Worthington stepped in to fill his shoes. Now co-star Charlize Theron has skipped out as well, along with director Bharat Nalluri. Set to take Theron's place is Angelina Jolie. This would be the second time Jolie has recently come on to a film that Cruise had left. The last one was Salt, which she's just completed. That was formerly called Edwin A. Salt, and was also a Cruise-starring project. When he left the part was re-gendered to fit Jolie. We've featured photos of her in Salt as they've dropped. THR describes the Hitchcockian plot of this film as centering "on an American tourist who, on...

The Tourist must be competing with The Green Hornet for H-town’s most dysfunctional production. (Green Hornet would still win.) In Charlize Theron’s absence from The Tourist, two-time Oscar winner Angelina Jolie is currently in talks to replace the blonde bombshell in the film, which will focus on an Interpol agent who “manipulates an American tourist in an attempt to entrap her former lover who is an elusive criminal.”
Recently Avatar and Terminator Salvation star Sam Worthington replaced Tom Cruise in the still director-less film. Bharat Nalluri (Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) exited the project earlier this month.
The Tourist is a remake of the 2005 French film Anthony Zimmer from director Jérôme Salle. It starred Sophie Marceau and Yvan Attal.

German filmmaker Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck, writer and director of The Lives of Others, which won the 2008 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, is in talks to direct The 28th Amendment, a long-gestating Warners project about conspiracy and intimidation at the White House. Amendment has been described as The Firm set in the White House; its premise is that for a good part of the 20th century, the president has been the puppet of a small, lethal gang that kills anyone who defies its wishes (JFK did and paid the price, according to one iteration of the script). Tom Cruise and Denzel Washington have previously been attached to the project with Phillip Noyce at the helm. Cruise and Noyce eventually left the film with the intention to make Edwin A. Angelina Jolie begins work today on "Salt" and USA Today already captured two of her looks; a soft-looking, all business blonde and a raven-haired femme fatale.
