Steve Baker, a conservative journalist who also sings in the David Bowie tribute band the American Bowie Experience, has been arrested and charged for his role in the January 6th, 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
Baker is facing four misdemeanor charges, according to NBC News. He turned himself into federal authorities in Texas on Friday.
According to a FBI affidavit, Baker spent 37 minutes inside of the US Capitol on January 6th, including at one point inside of the office of then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. You’re watching the BBC News at 10, and everything’s gone bloody bats*** mental,” newsreaders may have wanted to say, but have not. For months now – years, even – broadcasters have been heroically reporting on the unfolding chaos of our political world without giving any hint of their own thoughts or feelings. They must tell us the unprofessional things the government has been doing while always remaining consummately professional. But levels of dysfunction within the Tory party have recently reached a high watermark, and some of the on-screen poker faces have slipped. And, frankly, who could blame them?
How, for example, could BBC newsreader Martine Croxall not get the giggles, late on Sunday night, when telling us that Boris Johnson wouldn’t stand in the leadership contest? His David Brent-esque return from the Dominican Republic to try and reclaim his old job had flopped beautifully, and the human response was to find that deeply funny.

A BBC News presenter has been taken off air for a potential impartiality breach after asking “Am I allowed to be this gleeful?” on a political program following Boris Johnson’s decision to pull out of the race to be Prime Minister.
Martine Croxall was presenting Sunday night’s BBC News edition of The Papers, in which journalists review the day’s newspapers, when she made the comments at the start of the program, around 90 minutes after Johnson had gone public with his decision.
“Well this is all very exciting, isn’t it?,” said Croxall. “Am I allowed to be this gleeful?”
She later remarked: “I’m probably breaking some terrible impartiality rule by giggling.”
The BBC said it is “urgently reviewing for a potential breach of its impartiality” and Deadline understands Croxall has been taken off air by BBC News while the matter is investigated. The BBC has strict...

BBC presenter Martine Croxall has been taken off air by the BBC after her “gleeful” reaction to the news that Boris Johnson was pulling out of the Conservative leadership race, according to reports.
The broadcaster was leading the BBC News channel’s review of the newspapers, The Papers, a few minutes after Johnson quit the race on Sunday (23 October), and she introduced viewers to the show with the words: “Am I allowed to be this gleeful? Well, I am!”
According to a report in The Telegraph, BBC bosses have now taken Croxall off air for an undefined amount of time.
A spokesman told the publication: “BBC News is urgently reviewing last night’s edition of The Papers on the News channel for a potential breach of impartiality.
“It is imperative that we maintain the highest editorial standards.”
The statement added: “We have processes in place to uphold our standards, and these processes have been activated.

Welcome back to Insider, Jesse Whittock guiding you through this time around. It’s been a week of excitement from the international TV industry in Cannes and another one of utter chaos at Downing Street in the UK. All the latest news and views follow, so let’s go.
Mipcom Back With A Bang
Cannes goods and co-pros: Though I was back in the UK this week, everyone else in the international TV business was in one place – the south of France in the Palais des Festivals. For the first time in three years, Mipcom (now Mipcom Cannes officially) was fully back – no hybrid market antics here. Organizer Rx France claimed nearly 11,000 people made the trip. The annual attendance announcement used to be greeted with cynical chuckles from long-in-the-tooth journalists but the sense is that number seems about fair this year. Not a bad result for an industry that not...

Piers Morgan has hit out at calls for Boris Johnson to return as prime minister following the resignation of Liz Truss.
Johnson’s tenure as prime minister came to an end in September following a number of high-profile scandals and sinking approval ratings.
However, after Truss announced her resignation on Thursday (20 October) – becoming the shortest-lived prime minister in British history – the possibility of Johnson returning to the post has been discussed.
Speaking on his TalkTV series, former Good Morning Britain presenter Morgan said: “Politics can be full of exaggeration. Everything is unprecedented, a crisis, treachery, a war. But let me be very, very clear tonight. It is literally impossible to exaggerate the scale of the bedlam that this government has unleashed on our country in the last few weeks.
“It’s by far the worst thing that I’ve ever seen by any government. These useless clowns have basically ravaged our country – sinking the pound,...

Sophie Turner has offered a subtle response on social media after her Game of Thrones character Sansa Stark was caught up in a viral online debate.
The discussion was ignited by a tweet from Game of Thrones fan @daenartist, who wrote on Twitter: “One thing I love about the GoT show universe is it’s portrayals of the most heartless and cruel villains. No other show or movie makes you as invested in watching their downfall, it almost feels personal.”
Attached to the message were photos of four characters: Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson), Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) and Sansa Stark from the original Game of Thrones HBO series, plus Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) from spin-off prequel House of the Dragon.
The tweet has since been liked 14.5k times and quote-tweeted by 8,810 accounts.

Joy Behar, one of the hosts of ABC talk showThe View, has challenged Dame Judi Dench’s claim that the new series of Netflix’s royal family drama The Crown should come with a disclaimer regarding its historical accuracy.
“This dame disagrees with Dame Judi Dench, because they tell you at the top that it is not a documentary, and if you have a brain, you can figure out that the writers have used history,” Behar said during an episode on Thursday 20 October.
“If it’s documented history, then we can believe it,” added Behar, “but we’re not going to believe a conversation that’s going on in the bedroom of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

During a breaking political news story, I usually watch both BBC News and Sky News on two different screens, just so I don’t miss anything. This week, like many others, I added a third channel: a livestream of a lettuce.
After Prime Minister Liz Truss’ hard-line policies plunged the economy and her political party into turmoil, the Economist published an eviscerating column about her time so far in office, saying that she “has the shelf-life of a lettuce.”
So, the British tabloid Daily Star then decided to put this theory into action. They bought a lettuce, attached some googly eyes, placed it next to a framed photo of the Pm and published a livestream. “Can Liz Truss outlast this lettuce?” the publication asked readers.
It was a joke that, as you can imagine, set Twitter alight. But it also felt like something that would not Romaine long in the public consciousness (I’m sorry.

Channel 4 news anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy has apologised “unreservedly” to Northern Ireland minister Steve Baker for calling him a “c***” in what he called an “unguarded moment”.

Afternoon Insiders. A week is a long time in TV and film, and it’s also a long time in politics. Max Goldbart here and we’ve got you covered on all three. Read on.
Bye Bye Boris
All over in 36 hours: Few in Britain’s London politics bubble would have predicted that the scandal to bring down Pm Boris Johnson would involve a little known Deputy Chief Whip called Chris Pincher, but that is exactly what transpired this week. Within a colossal 36 hours that rocked the UK political landscape, Johnson went from feeling vaguely safe after an almost-year-long-stretch of scandals to resigning in disgrace on the steps of his 10 Downing Street home. At times it was almost impossible to keep up (although the BBC and Sky coverage did a fantastic job), as minister after minister resigned in protest at Johnson’s handling of the Pincher scandal and a more general feeling of disarray,...

Boris Johnson has confirmed he is leaving No.10 today.
The under-fire Pm has finally agreed to end his Premiership after days of facing mass cabinet resignations.
Speaking on the steps of Downing Street, he thanked the British people for their support and said he will continue with the job until the autumn while a leadership contest takes place in the coming months.
But it’s worth noting that the last leadership contest took two months, and Johnson will visit the Queen at the end of the process to tell her he is standing down.

From the day she took the top role at the Walt Disney-backed news division, Godwin has been navigating tricky terrain. The top producer slot at the pillar of the organization, “Good Morning America,” came open abruptly before she started, the result of a surprise parting between the show’s former senior executive producer, Michael Corn, and ABC News. The former editor of British tabloid The Daily Mail, Paul Dacre, could be next to lead U.K. media regulator Ofcom.
According to The Guardian, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is close to appointing the journalist — who ran The Daily Mail from 1992 to 2018 — as chair of the powerful org, which regulates the country’s TV, radio and video on demand sectors. The Guardian, citing Whitehall sources, reported Sunday that Johnson is close to making the appointment and could also reward the 72-year-old Dacre with a peerage.
The potential appointment is controversial due to Dacre’s right-wing political leanings. More recently, under his leadership, the Daily Mail set out a strong pro-Brexit agenda that played a key role in affecting public opinion over the country’s divorce from the European Union.

Ted Koppel hasn’t anchored ABC’s “Nightline” since 2005. Yet he’s had a new influence on the late-night news program since last week.
“Nightline” has, at least for now, returned to the format that brought it critical renown and TV fame. Since last Monday, the show has spent its regular late-night half hour delving into the world’s coronavirus crisis. And, starting tomorrow night, it will for a time return to its original perch, airing right after late local news, just like Koppel did. Repeats of late-night mainstay “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will start after midnight.
“We are just leaning more heavily into our roots,” says Byron Pitts, who co-anchors the program with Juju Chang.
On one recent night’s broadcast, ABC News foreign correspondent James Longman offered viewers a you-are-there look at his efforts to get out of Italy before the country was locked down, then checked himself in to an Airbnb to recover.
