A bearded geek with glasses and a funny cap created the main fantasy saga of the 21st century, which approached the level of cult status of The Lord of the Rings. George R.R. Martin himself has always been a huge fan of J. R.R. Tolkien.
However, he draws inspiration not only from the pages of dusty fantasy novels, but also from movies and TV series. Martin, a screenwriter himself, wrote several episodes for The Twilight Zone in the 1980s, and the number of his unrealized TV projects is simply too many to count.
George R.R. Praises Six Feet Under’s Finale
Martin shared his favorite TV episodes on his blog, and the drama Six Feet Under, it’s final episode in particular, received special praise:
“[…] that last episode was far and away the best finale in the entire history of television, and I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly do better.

When "Six Feet Under" came to Netflix in November 2023, I was eager to finally watch one of HBO's finest television shows. My father passed away in September, and while binging this series so soon after his death might seem like a masochistic endeavor, it was quite healing. One of the few things I knew about "Six Feet Under" was that many critics and audiences consider the final episode the greatest television ending of all time. As George R. R. Martin told Variety, "[T]hat last episode was far and away the best finale in the entire history of television, and I cannot imagine how anyone could possibly do better." Empire's review called it "almost unbearably moving and thrillingly executed."

Created by Alan Ball and inspired by The Southern Vampire Mysteries, a series of novels by Charlaine Harris, the TV series True Blood ran on HBO for seven seasons, from 2008 to 2014, ending up with a total of 80 episodes. 42 of those episodes featured Joe Manganiello as the werewolf character Alcide Herveaux. Introduced in season 3, Alcide was only supposed to be a guest star for that particular season – but he proved to be so popular with viewers, he was kept around… until season 7, when he was killed off. Not surprisingly, Manganiello wasn’t happy with the way his character went out. In fact, he was so displeased with Alcide being killed off, he feels he still has unfinished werewolf business to this day.
During an interview on Andy Cohen’s SiriusXM show, Manganiello said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “I thought there was so much left on the table for me.

This article contains spoilers for the Six Feet Under series finale.
Every episode of Six Feet Under begins with an ending.
While not as well-regarded as its early 2000s HBO drama brethren The Sopranos and The Wire, Six Feet Under is still an important part of HBO, and therefore television, history. It’s also very good, as Netflix subscribers can now find out thanks to Warner Bros. Discovery’s content-sharing initiative with the streamer. (Previous HBO titles moving to Netflix include Band of Brothers and Ballers).
Created by Alan Ball (True Blood), Six Feet Under premiered on June 3, 2001 and followed the Fisher family as they tried to keep the family business of Fisher & Sons Funeral Home together after the death of paterfamilias Nate Sr. (Richard Jenkins). Naturally for a show set in a funeral home, the opening minutes of each Six Feet Under installment features a death that will produce...

Roland A. Pattillo, the gynecologic oncologist who played a pivotal role in bringing the case of Henrietta Lacks to public awareness and was played by Ruben Santiago-Hudson in the 2017 HBO movie The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, died of Parkinson’s disease on May 3 at his home outside Atlanta. He was 89.
His death went largely unreported until recent articles in The Nation and The New York Times.
Although the so-called “HeLa” cell line had been used since the 1950s for scientific research that helped develop the polio vaccine, HIV treatments and many other medical advances, the human source of the cell line – Henrietta Lacks, a 31-year-old Black woman who died of cervical cancer in 1951 – was largely unknown outside the medical community. In the 1990s, Pattillo made it his mission to celebrate Lacks and her immense contribution to medical research.

Marcia DeRousse, who came to the aid of the supernatural as Dr. Patricia Ludwig on the HBO drama True Blood, died Saturday in Altadena after a long illness, a publicist announced. She was 70.
She wrote on Facebook in April that a fall in her doctor’s office was going to “lead to my death,” adding that the spill “caused my hiatal hernia to move to an area where it is now dangerous.”
The 4-foot-4 DeRousse made her big-screen debut alongside fellow little person Billy Barty in the Warner Bros. film Under the Rainbow (1981), also starring Chevy Chase and Carrie Fisher. She also was in the movies Tiptoes (2002) and D.J. Caruso’s The Disappointments Room (2016).
DeRousse appeared on episodes on the Alan Ball-created True Blood during its second, fourth and seventh seasons.

In the eyes of George R.R. Martin, HBO’s “Six Feet Under” sits atop the Iron Throne of television finales.
After Vanity Fair published an article titled “25 Perfect TV Episodes From the Last 25 Years,” which included the Martin-written “Blackwater” from “Game of Thrones,” the “Song of Ice and Fire” author took to his Not a Blog website to weigh in on some of his favorite episodes of television.
“If I had to pick one episode that was even more perfect than all the others on the list… it would have to be the final episode of ‘Six Feet Under,'” Martin wrote on his blog. “I liked that series well enough, though I cannot say I loved it as much as I loved ‘Rome’ or ‘Deadwood’ or ‘Fargo’ or a few other shows missing from the list, but that last episode was far and away the best finale in the entire history of television,...

The boundaries of the streaming world are beginning to break down: more HBO shows are officially coming to Netflix. Warner Bros has been dabbling in licensing titles out to the massive streamer for a while now, setting up a deal back in June that's already led to the Issa Rae-led comedy "Insecure" finding a new home on Netflix. Now, though, Netflix is about to have countless dads standing by the TV transfixed: two war epics from master filmmaker Steven Spielberg are set to drop on streaming on September 15, 2023.
Limited series "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" are new classics in their own right. The former, co-created by Spielberg and Tom Hanks, dramatizes the story of Easy Company, a parachute battalion from the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division that ended up in the thick of battle during World War II. True Blood Season 5 rekindled audience faith in the television series based on Charlaine Harris’ The Southern Vampire Mysteries novels. Previous seasons of the series received positive reviews but it seemed the show was struggling to recapture its addictive qualities. With Season 5, True Blood reclaimed its magic, justifying the need for two more seasons. The fantasy horror drama created by Alan Ball premiered in September 2008 on HBO. It concluded in August 2014 after Season 7 with a total of 80 episodes. HBO announced a reboot in late 2020 but has abandoned the quest. The series ranks among the...

Fangbangers everywhere, undo the clasps on your beaded chokers, un-smudge the thick ring of kohl around your eyes, and close the lid on your coffin for (probably) the last time. HBO will no longer bring "True Blood" back to screens in rebooted form. The news came down the pike this week from Variety, who reported the project's cancelation directly from the source. Casey Bloys, CEO of content at HBO and HBO Max, told the outlet that there were repeated attempts to kick something off with several scripts, "but nothing that felt like it got there."
Loose plans for a reboot were originally reported in 2020. "Riverdale" and "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was attached from the beginning, which was an incredible vote of confidence for the property. Especially on "Riverdale," Aguirre-Sacasa has been getting away with darker, stranger, and more audacious things on broadcast television than you can...

Back in December of 2020, it was announced that HBO was in the early development stages on a reboot of True Blood, a show that previously ran on HBO for seven seasons, from 2008 to 2014. In December of 2021, we heard that HBO was also in the early stages of development on a follow-up to the series Six Feet Under, which ran for five seasons, from 2001 to 2005. But now HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys has confirmed to Variety that neither of those revivals are moving forward.
Here’s what Variety reported (after sharing a quote where Bloys indicated that there’s nothing currently going on with the Watchmen property): Also not in the cards are the rumored “Six Feet Under” revival, which Bloys said was never really in the works. A return to “True Blood” was considered, with HBO developing a few scripts, “but nothing that felt like it got there.

As you may recall, it was announced back in 2020 that HBO was developing a series reboot of their hit vampire series “True Blood,” with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa leading the charge. Based on the novels by Charlaine Harris and created by Alan Ball, HBO’s vampire/werewolf/were-panther/you-name-it series aired between 2008 and 2014, officially coming to an end after seven seasons and 80 episodes.
But what’s the latest on HBO’s “True Blood” reboot? Well, according to a new article from Variety this week, those plans from back in 2020 are dead-in-the-water here in 2023.
HBO and HBO Max content CEO Casey Bloys tells Variety that while a few scripts had been written for a potential “True Blood” reboot, nothing ended up coming together. It seems the project was only ever in the early stages, and HBO wasn’t confident enough to proceed. That doesn’t mean “True Blood” will Never be back, but...

As society evolves, moments in films that were once beloved can start to sour in history’s proverbial rear-view mirror. When Sandy (Olivia Newton John) revamps her entire look and personality to please her boyfriend Danny (John Travolta) at the end of Grease (1978), for example. Or when the cartoon crows in Disney’s animated classic Dumbo are literally called “The Jim Crows”.

The four creators on our Gold Derby “Meet the Experts” showrunners panel are perhaps uniquely qualified to talk about ending things. “Reboot” creator Steven Levitan guided “Modern Family” to its conclusion after 11 successful seasons. “Five Days at Memorial” co-creator Carlton Cuse was responsible for the series finale of “Lost,” one of the most significant final episodes of modern television history. “Black Bird” creator and writer Dennis Lehane has written whooper conclusions for his novels “Mystic River,” “Gone Baby Gone,” and “Shutter Island.” “Dead to Me” creator Liz Feldman just stuck the landing on her own Emmy-nominated Netflix comedy, which just debuted its final season.

Warning: The below feature contains major spoilers for HBO's "Six Feet Under."
In 2001, Ryan Murphy had not adapted "The Normal Heart" for television. Mike Nichols had not yet transformed "Angels in America" into a six-part miniseries for HBO. While serious gay art thrived on the stage -- thanks to the pioneering efforts of writers like Tony Kushner, Larry Kramer, and Terrence McNally -- television offerings were bleak. For those looking for legitimate queer representation on television, a sassy guest star was often the best they got. Thankfully, "Six Feet Under" came along and changed the landscape.

Over numerous rewatches, I switch allegiances. Some years I'm a Brenda (Rachel Griffiths), a David (Michael C. Hall), a Nate (Peter Krause), and recently,...

Nearly every culture has come up with some variation of the vampire myth. From ancient Romanian storytellers sharing cautionary tales about the shapeshifting Strigoi to modern-day LARPers putting on plastic fangs and hanging out in goth bars, it’s clear that our fascination with undead bloodsuckers is far more than a simple fad. That’s why it’s no surprise that popular culture has been borrowing from vampiric folklore for years, especially when it comes to television.
While some of the reasoning behind the popularity of vampires on the small screen is practical, an even simpler explanation is that the tragic and romantic qualities of the immortal Nosferatu make them uniquely suited for weekly dramas. And with so much vampiric media out there, we decided to come up with this list of six must-watch vampire shows to quench your thirst for televised bloodshed.
As usual, this list is purely based on personal opinion,...

Bob Greenblatt’s rollercoaster ride as an executive over the past four years is a perfect illustration of the speed and magnitude of industry disruption.
The longtime executive left his post as NBC Entertainment chairman in September 2018 after seven solid years. He joined up with AT&T’s WarnerMedia as head of HBO and Direct-to-Consumer in March 2019, but 17 months later got pushed out of that role in a massive shakeup. In January, he celebrated the launch of “The Gilded Age,” the costume drama series that he produced for HBO, which has a new owner in Warner Bros. Discovery since Greenblatt last worked there in 2020.
Greenblatt has not been idle since he was given “the gift of free time” from WarnerMedia in the second half of 2020, as he quips in an interview with Variety. He seized the moment to reflect in a significant way on his more than 30 years in the entertainment industry.

Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

Even plenty of Academy Award-winning movies have not aged particularly well. As the 94th Academy Awards approach this Sunday (27 March), here are 10 Oscar-winning films that are problematic in 2021.
Green Book (2018)
When Green Book, which won Best Picture at the 91st Academy Awards, arrived in cinemas a few years back, it quickly became a divisive topic of conversation. The picture, starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, enjoyed early success with audiences and sailed through awards season, but critics lambasted it as being shortsighted in its depiction of race relations.

The “Quantum Leap” sequel series has tapped Raymond Lee as the lead for the reboot of the beloved 1980s sci-fi series, NBC confirmed to TheWrap on Friday.
He will play Dr. Ben Seong, a “spiritual successor” to Scott Bakula’s beloved time traveler, Dr. Sam Beckett. Per NBC, the character is “both a scientist and man of faith. He’s a world-renowned physicist working on a time travel project known as Quantum Leap.”
The new series is set three decades after the original series. Here’s the logline for the new “Quantum Leap” pilot: “It’s been 30 years since Dr. Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. Now a new team has been assembled to restart the project in the hopes of understanding the mysteries behind the machine and the man who created it.”

Apparently a series can get its sequel decades after the fact, even if you've killed off all of the main characters. According to Variety, a return to "Six Feet Under" is in very early development for HBO, with original series creator Alan Ball signed on to executive produce the project. While reboots and sequels are exciting and becoming more frequent at HBO, who recently released the sequel to "The Sopranos," "The Many Saints of Newark," there's just one tiny little problem with bringing back "Six Feet Under": the finale depicted the deaths of each of the main characters. If we...

Another legacy series could be returning to HBO.
Variety is reporting that a follow-up to Six Feet Under is in development.
The outlet stresses that the potential project is in "very early development."
Projects in development are not guaranteed to get a pilot, never mind a series order, so there's no telling how this might shake out.
Also, no plot details have been revealed, and it is not currently known if it will include any of the original stars.
The TV industry is obsessed with bringing projects from the past back as reboots, revivals, or a mixture of the two.
Some are successful, but the vast majority fail to garner much traction.
Six Feet Under came from Alan Ball, and the cast included Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodriguez, Mathew St. Patrick, and Rachel Griffiths.

A follow-up series to Alan Ball’s Six Feet Under is being explored by HBO, Deadline has learned.
The project is in its very early stages; I hear the premium network has commissioned a script, with no firm concept and no writer attached yet. Series creator/executive producer Ball and executive producers Bob Greenblatt and David Janollari are on board to executive produce the project, which was first reported by Deadline’s sister pub Variety.
Created and produced by Ball, Six Feet Under aired for five seasons on HBO from 2001-2005. It centered around the lives of the Fisher family, who run a funeral home in Los Angeles, along with their friends and lovers.
Peter Krause, Michael C. Hall, Frances Conroy, Lauren Ambrose, Freddy Rodriguez, Mathew St. Patrick, and Rachel Griffiths starred in the ensemble drama. It was produced by Actual Size Films and The Greenblatt/Janollari Studio.

A follow-up to “Six Feet Under” is in very early development at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
At this time, no writer is attached to the project. Original series creator Alan Ball and executive producers Bob Greenblatt and David Janollari are all attached to executive produce the new project.
Reps for HBO declined to comment. Reps for Ball did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

My coming week of Emmy predictions in key categories gets under way with Outstanding Television Movie, which will be presented this weekend at the Creative Arts Awards, rather than on the CBS primetime broadcast September 19. With that downgrade, and if there was more proof needed of the sorry state of the Television Movie category — once a proud beacon for the networks — the combined total number of nominations for this year’s crop of nominees in the category is just a measly seven, spread among the five nominees. Compare that to 63 overall nominations for the five Limited Series nominees, and you can see where the love is really being spread.

When Paul Bettany was approached for the title role in Alan Ball’s Uncle Frank, he was perhaps as skeptical as he was excited. “I’m a big Alan Ball fan, but also sort of a ‘glass is half empty’ type of fellow, so I went, ‘I’m going to get the one sh*t Alan Ball script,’” the actor joked. “I read it and it wasn’t, of course. But then I had lots of questions about whether I could and should play the part.”
The film written, directed and produced by Ball centers on college professor Frank Bledsoe, who takes his niece Beth (Sophia Lillis) to the South Carolina funeral of family patriarch Daddy Mac (Stephen Root). While visiting family, Frank wrestles with the sexual identity he’s long tried to hide from them, also coming to grips with a traumatic incident from his past.

In order to address the future, sometimes you need to delve into the past. Most of this year’s Emmy-nominated TV movies do exactly that, exploring themes of love, faith and friendship in order to heal harmful past narratives and home in on the humanity of their characters.
When Eugene Ashe was penning the script for “Sylvie’s Love,” the love story of a saxophonist and a young woman, starring Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha, for Amazon Prime Video, he specifically wanted to focus on the late 1950s and early 1960s, at the height of the civil rights movement. His goal was to highlight the humanity of Black leads during that time instead of the trauma so many other films have already tackled.

If Gold Derby’s predictions are true that “Sylvie’s Love” will win the Emmy for Best TV Movie, it would be a first for Amazon Prime Video. Previously the streamer contended once in this category for “King Lear” (2019), losing to Netflix’s “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” The new telefilm stars Tessa Thompson as Sylvie, a 1950s record store worker who has dreams of becoming a television producer. She soon falls in love with Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha) and they begin a years-long, on-again/off-again relationship.
Director/producer Eugene Ashe also wrote the film that originally had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. That’s where Amazon acquired distribution rights, eventually releasing in on December 23, just in time for the holidays. At the Critics Choice Awards, “Sylvie’s Love” was nominated for Best TV Movie and Thompson for Best Actress. It also won the Image Award for Ashe for Best Director.

“I made this thing that I will, for the rest of my days, be very proud to have been a part of,” claims Paul Bettany. Indeed the actor has plenty to be proud of as of late, with two projects garnering him rave reviews. He first starred in the Amazon film “Uncle Frank,” before jumping back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the limited series “WandaVision” on Disney+. Both roles connected with the actor in meaningful ways. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
While getting ready to film “Uncle Frank,” writer/director Alan Ball told Bettany that “this movie is for anybody who has ever struggled to live their life authentically.” The sentiment immediately grabbed the actor and he latched on to that “beautiful, simple message.”

Colton Ryan (Little Voice) is set to star opposite Elle Fanning in Hulu drama The Girl From Plainville, from The Post writer Liz Hannah and Dr. Death exec producer Patrick Macmanus.
Written by Hannah and Macmanus and produced by UCP, The Girl From Plainville stars Fanning as Michelle Carter and is inspired by the true story of her controversial “texting-suicide” case. Based off the Esquire article of the same name by Jesse Barron, the limited series will explore Carter’s relationship with Conrad Roy III and the events that led to his death and, later, her controversial conviction of involuntary manslaughter.
Ryan will play Coco, a sweet, caring young man grappling with anxiety and loneliness in a world he doesn’t feel he fits into. When he serendipitously meets Michelle Carter, he sees in her someone who understands his struggles and seems to see the real him. But his relationship...

Close friends from past projects filled out her on-screen family, such as Lois Smith and Judy Greer. While the experience of being part of that large ensemble was fun for the actress, Martindale’s most meaningful moments occurred with Paul Bettany as the titular Frank. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Frank is gay, but stays closeted around his Southern family. He travels back to his hometown from New York City after his father (Stephen Root) passes away. The two had a contentious relationship which made Frank the black sheep of the family.
