Legendary Entertainment has mostly co-produced pics with Warner Bros. But the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 marked their first solo effort, and it paid off big, raking in $93 million domestic. So, THR reports, Legendary is eager to produce another baseball-centered drama. This time around their source material is One Shot at Forever: A Small Town, an Unlikely Coach and a Magical Baseball Season, which was penned by senior Sports Illustrated writer Chris Ballard. Legendary has buzzed about screenwriter Wes Jones on board to adapt the book, and Mike Tollin, who has had a hand in creating Varsity Blues, Coach Carter and Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream, will produce. The movie adaptation will be a mix of The Bad News Bears, Hoosiers and Remember the Titans, offering a story of a ragtag team who rises to the challenge of competition thanks to an unconventional coach. Following on from their success with Jackie Robinson biopic "42," Legendary Entertainment has picked up the film rights to Chris Ballard's baseball book "One Shot at Forever".
The story is set in 1971 and tells of a drought-ridden small Illinois town where a hippie English teacher reluctantly took on coaching duties for the high school baseball team.
Bucking conventions, the team, sporting long hair and warming up to Jesus Christ Superstar, ended up making the state finals where they played an established Chicago team.
The tone is said to be akin to a mix of "Bad News Bears," "Remember the Titans" and "Hoosiers". Wes Jones ("College Republicans") will adapt the script while Mike Tollin ("Coach Carter," "Varsity Blues") will produce.

Legendary Entertainment has plans to adapt Chris Ballard's recent book One Shot at Forever into a feature film. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that screenwriter Wes Jones is set to handle the adaptation. Published in 2012 with the subtitle "A Small Town, an Unlikely Coach, and a Magical Baseball Season," One Shot at Forever is officially described as follows: In 1971, a small-town high school baseball team from rural Illinois playing with hand-me-down uniforms and peace signs on their hats defied convention and the odds. Led by an English teacher with no coaching experience, the Macon Ironmen emerged from a field of 370 teams to represent the smallest school in Illinois history to make the state final, a distinction that still stands. There, sporting long...
