Acting coach Clay Banks wanted to create the feeling of an “audition on steroids” to motivate and test his students. He took the pressure of a monologue, introduced a ticking clock, and then added a citywide level of competition. Eight years later, actors are still competing in L.A.’s 1Minute Monologue Contest, where contestants have 60 seconds to shine before a panel of industry professionals. This year’s event is scheduled for Nov. 8. “We have these big digital clocks that count down the hours, minutes, and seconds,” Clay told Backstage. “It’s high-pressure and it’s crazy-efficient.” Preparation and rehearsal are key, as points are deducted for monologues shy of 45 seconds and over 75 seconds.
