The episode of The Black Sheep covering DeepStar Six was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the subject of the latest entry in our Black Sheep video series, DeepStar Six (get it Here).
Released in 1989 and often compared to its fellow ’89 release Leviathan (which has also gotten the Black Sheep treatment), DeepStar Six was scripted Geoff Miller and Lewis Abernathy – which is interesting because movies like Leviathan and DeepStar Six exist because James Cameron’s The Abyss was coming out the same year, and Abernathy and Cameron are pals. Abernathy even had an acting role in Titanic.

Jean-Jacques Annaud directs Sean Connery in The Name of the Rose (Der Name Der Rose), the film version of the novel by Umberto Eco
The Name of the Rose is a great adaptation of the most important work by Umberto Eco. A mystery story set in an era of supersitions (Fourteenth century) with the Inquisition in the middle.
Orson Welles said that one should adapt lesser literary works. This time, the director and the entire team do a great job by focusing on the detective story part of the literary work.

Brother William of Baskerville (Sean Connery) and his disciple Adso de Melk (Christian Slater) arrive at an abbey where one of the monks died recently, where the abbot hopes that Brother William will be able to solve the crimes.

Vision Film has acquired rights to I Love Us, a romantic drama from Danny A. Abeckaser’s 2B Films. Abeckaser stars with Jackie Cruz, Katie Cassidy, Harlow Jane, David James Elliott, Robert Davi, Jasper Polish, Greg Finley, James Madio, David James Elliott, Elya Baskin and Courtney Lopez in the ensemble, which wrapped production at the end of March after a shoot in Los Angeles. It will get a 10-city theatrical run along with VOD in September.
In the script by Kosta Kondilopoulos, a seasoned thief (Abeckaser) trades in his criminal ways for a “normal” married life after falling in love with a single mother (Cassidy) that catches him off guard. But when tragedy strikes, he’s forced to take one last job to pay off old debts and keep his new family together, creating conflict all around him.
Abeckaser also produced with Wild7Films’ Kyle Stefanski and Mike Hermosa, and Above the Clouds’ Jeff Hoffman. Executive producers are Katie Cassidy, Ron Rofe, Isaac Gindi, Eddie Gindi and Gustavo Nascimento.
“I Love Us was such a passion project and a labor of love. I felt the movie deserved to be with a company that really believes and loves the movie like I do. Lisa Romanoff at Vision was the right person for this journey for myself as director along with producers Kyle Stefanski, Mike Hermosa and Jeff Hoffman. We are excited for people to see it.”

Level 33 Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Rollers, written and directed by Isaiah Smallman. The film will be available in theaters and on VOD on June 25.
The plot centers on Rufus Paisley (Johnny Ray Gill), a closet alcoholic and whose everything he loves is smashed together into one place: Rollers. He gave up a promising career as a musician in order to keep it alive, but the historic venue, once owned by his parents, is in trouble and he’s running out of ways to save it, and himself. His friends urge him to move on, but can he?
Kevin Bigley, Vicky Jeudy, Kate Cobb, Joel Allen and Spencer Rayshon Stevenson also star. Smallman and Tara Ansley produced the pic, which was executive produced by Tiffany Boyle, Bryce McGuire, Elsa Ramo and Eric Costello.
The deal was negotiated by Boyle and Erika Canchola on behalf of the filmmakers and by Andreas Olavarria and Kate Sheffield on behalf of Level 33.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired rights to the sports documentary Resurgence, directed by social media fitness stars Heber Cannon and Marston Sawyers (aka the Buttery Bros). The pic, which follows the shakeup of the worldwide annual fitness competition The CrossFit Games in the midst of the pandemic, will debut on iTunes and Apple TV on July 20, followed by digital platforms and VOD on August 3.
“With Covid-19 restrictions allowing for only 10 athletes versus the usual 80-100+, it’s the first and possibly last year we will be able to tell interesting angles from every athlete competing,” the directors said. “We are honored to have been there for this intimate event, and excited for the world to see the behind the scenes of what went on at the 2020 CrossFit Games.”
“The collaboration among the Buttery Bros., CrossFit HQ, and Gravitas has been smooth and it’s great to get the band back together,” said Michael Murphy, President of Gravitas Ventures. “Previous CrossFit films are immediate best-sellers, and we expect the same from Resurgence which is awesome in scope, story-telling, and quality.”

This big, expensive and well-produced action-suspense Sci-fi epic mostly delivers on its promise to be Aliens at the bottom of the sea. At heart it’s a 1950s pulse-pounder with a bigger monster, a zillion times the budget and a script that does everything but make us care. We appreciate the likable characters but it’s too easy to predict who will ‘get it’ next. The realism factor is not bad at all, although the undersea explorer video training sessions should have given ‘how not to crack up under stress’ more emphasis. And can’t anybody properly mind those pesky nuclear bombs?

Former pop star turned actor Luke Goss has had an interesting post-pop career, carving his own path in Hollywood, appearing in a number of action movies since his star-making turn in Blade 2. He has put in some great performances in a bevy of direct-to-market action movies, in particular the Death Race Dtv sequels – two of my personal favourites of his. What makes Goss such a good action star is, honestly, his smouldering good looks and a quiet demeanour. Thanks to which, he can pull off a smooth spy role and a quiet hard man of action hero proportions. In Legacy he does both, playing MI6 agent Gray – who in the opening calmly and smoothly (with...

On the heels of other successful music-oriented non-fiction titles, Sony Pictures Classics’ David Crosby: Remember My Name opens in New York and Los Angeles this weekend. The doc, spotlighting the long-time rocker, headlines a fairly busy weekend of new Specialties making their debuts. Freestyle Releasing is going day and date with aging superhero feature Supervised, starring Tom Berenger, Beau Bridges and Louis Gossett Jr., while Breaking Glass Pictures is heading out with Tokyo-set gangster thriller She’s Just a Shadow. With the superhero genre exploding in Hollywood right now, it was only a matter of time before we saw a movie made about a bunch of elderly heroes who come out of retirement to save the world.
The movie is called Supervized, and it stars the likes of Tom Berenger, Beau Bridges, and Louis Gossett Jr. Yes, this is a real movie, and we have a trailer for you to watch below. As you’ll see it’s filled with hefty amount of senior gags involving false teeth, farts, superpowers, and more.
The film actually has a fun concept, and it looks like it will be a silly yet enjoyable flick. Here’s the synopsis for Supervized:
Supervized tells the story of an elderly group of international superheroes retired to Dunmanor nursing home in Ireland. Ray is the once world renowned ‘Maximum Justice’ who as his nom de plume suggests...

"It's time to wake up and smell the justice." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for a lighthearted indie comedy titled Supervized, from Ireland about senior superheroes now living in a retirement home. Yes it looks as goofy and extremely cheesy as it sounds so watch out. The set of elderly superheroes include Tom Berenger as Maximum Justice, Beau Bridges as Shimmy, Fionnula Flanagan as Madera Moonlight, and Louis Gossett Jr. as Total Thunder. The full cast also includes Clive Russell, Fiona Glascott, Ned Dennehy, Elya Baskin, and John Kavanagh. The four ageing heroes come together for one last hurrah, as always happens. It reminds me a bit of Mystery Men, with a few old fogey superheroes in that film, too. This doesn't look so good, which explains why it's headed straight to VOD for release. Give it a look anyway. Here's the first official trailer for Steve Barron's Supervized,...

Live Action:
It's noteworthy that four out of the five Oscar-nominated live shorts center around children or adolescents, and the 5th around immature adults. I'm not sure what this means, exactly—coming-of-age slices of life tales are easy fodder for films in brief. Each of these nominees seems eerily old-fashioned in their perspectives, though there's enough freshness in their style and presentation to make them worth watching.
At first glance, God of Love looks like it stars the Williamsburg imports from the "Look at This Fucking Hipster" website, but Luke Matheny's humorously neurotic, black-and-white variation on the Cupid story is quite enjoyable. The filmmaker stars as sad-sack, lounge-singer and dart-thrower Raymond Goodfellow; his fast-talking, curly haired, clownish demeanor makes him seem the love child of Jeff Goldblum and Elya Baskin. The character's amusing, though he has so many quirks and tics and manipulative means (who can blame him?...

The Dukes are washed up. Once the biggest group of the 60s, the doo-wop vets are now relegated to a circuit dominated by infrequent bouts of nostalgia-driven TV commercials. Fellow crooners and long-time friends Danny (Robert Davi, who also directs, produces and is a co-writer) and George (a comfortable Chazz Palminteri) talk the talk on a daily basis, putting their heads together about how to make ends meet, not only for themselves but the rest of the group, including former-Duke-now-diabetic Armond (Frank D'Amico) and Murphy (Elya Baskin), a friend of the group who always seems to be on the verge of nervous breakdown. When Danny happens to overhear a vital bit of information while accompanying George to the dentist, the Dukes decided that the only way to meet their financial needs is to crack a safe – but they can’t do it alone…

Though Robert Davi is identified with mega-bad guys in such flicks as The Goonies, Die Hard, and Licence to Kill, he has also played an array of characters in more than 60 movies and TV programs. In part, Davi blames the press for perpetrating the image of him as archetypical villain, "instead of calling me an actor's actor," he says. "No one looks at your body of work." What makes it so much fun to play Danny, a former doo-wop singer down on his luck, in Davi's latest project, The Dukes, "is that he's a regular guy," emphasizes the Queens-born actor. "Also, I get the chance to play a singer. I interjected singing in Goonies, but here I'm playing a singer." A trained opera singer, Davi pauses to point out, "And I have a chance to be raw. A friend who saw the movie says this is the most he's ever seen of Robert Davi onscreen.

A crowd-pleaser for the Aarp set, Robert Davi's writing and directing debut The Dukes casts an affectionate eye on a little-explored milieu that's simultaneously mundane and rife with faded glamour. Davi and Chazz Palminteri play members of the eponymous doo-wop group, retro mirth-makers whose glory days have faded into distant memory. The two now toil in a restaurant for their brassy Italian stereotype of an aunt (Miriam Margolyes) and pine for better days and a solution to their seemingly permanent cash-flow crises. The harmonizers turn small-time crooks when they decide to steal a shipment of gold from dentists, with some help from good buddies Elya Baskin, a laid-off airline mechanic; corpulent stand-up comedian Frank D'Amico; and safecracker Bruce Weitz. An underutilized Peter Bogdanovich co-stars as the group's sad-eyed manager, a Willy Loman type who struggles even to land the group degrading gigs in ridiculous costumes. Considering the film's...

The Dukesby Peter Dimako, Editor Cavu Pictures , Sun Lion Films and Doo Wop Productions’ “The Dukes” sings a fine tune. Robert Davi makes his directorial debut on “The Dukes,” a comedic indie which one just can’t help loving. Davi, loved for his roles on many a film and TV offering including “The Goonies,” “Predator 2” and “Stargate Atlantis,” writes this work alongside James Andronica (“The November Men”). The story is easy to follow, focusing on a former doo wop band known as “The Dukes” consisting of George Zucco (Chazz Palminteri ) and Danny Pasquale (Robert Davi). They may have had the crowds roaring at The Brooklyn Paramount as the number one group in America but now in their ripe age, are shadows of their former selves. Their agent Lou (Peter Bogdanovich) tries to secure them any type of gig for them in order to keep them paying the bills. This...
