Composer Danny Elfman may best be known for his work on cult classics like Batman, Good Will Hunting, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas. But at the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s annual gala and fundraiser on Saturday, the industry titan was given a special nod for his prolific body of work both on and beyond the screen as the evening’s honoree.

“Crip Camp,” “Gunda” and “Time” are among the films that have made Doc NYC’s 2020 “Short List,” an annual attempt by the New York-based festival to identify the nonfiction films most likely to play a significant part in awards season.
Those three films were also included in the Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations for Best Documentary Feature, and on the International Documentary Association’s shortlist from which the Ida chooses nominees for the Ida Documentary Awards. They are the only three movies to land on all three lists.
Nine additional films on the Doc NYC list were also singled out either by the Ida or Critics Choice: “Boys State,” “Collective,” “Dick Johnson Is Dead,” “The Fight,” “MLK/FBI,” “76 Days,” “The Social Dilemma,” “The Truffle Hunters” and “Welcome to Chechnya.”
Other films on the Doc NYC list, which is made up of 15 documentaries, are “I Am Greta,” “On the Record” and “A Thousand Cuts.

The singer is the favourite to win the Academy award for best original song on Sunday night, but she faces stiff competition from Scarlett Johansson, a talking bear and more
No matter that she won the award for best British single, Adele didn't show up at the Brits at the O2 in London on Wednesday night. What could have been more important? Well, the Academy Awards, that's what.
It would be nice to have one of those on the shelf. Bob Dylan no less seemed especially pleased to have bagged the Academy award for best original song with Things Have Changed in 2001 after it featured in Curtis Hanson's Wonder Boys. "God bless you all with peace, tranquility and good will," he was even heard to quip to the academy. In her excitement, Adele tweeted when she heard she'd been nominated this year.
Oh my god I feel like Meryl Streep!

Last year’s Best Original Song category had a dismal two (Two!) nominations in a year that gave us such songs as the catchy “Hello Hello” from the piano man himself, Elton John (who has seen no love from the Academy since The Lion King in 1994) from Gnomeo and Juliet, a brand new (and beautifully haunting) song from The National, “Think You Can Wait,” from Win Win, and eleven new songs (any of which could have/should have been a contender) from Sigur Rós front-man Jónsi from We Bought a Zoo. Luckily this year the Academy decided on a much more respectable number of songs (five of them!) pulled from a variety of film genres including a documentary (Chasing Ice), comedy (Ted), musical (Les Misérables), action (Skyfall), and adventure (Life of Pi) performed by a range of singers, including chart topping artists and even one actress. An increased number of songs may be getting their moment in...

Norah Jones will sing the jazzy Everybody Needs a Best Friend from the stuffed-bear comedy Ted on the upcoming Oscar telecast, the producers have announced.
The tune, which is up for Original Song, was co-written by Academy Awards host (and Ted filmmaker) Seth MacFarlane — so when producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron revealed last week that Adele would be crooning her nominated song from Skyfall, it was easy to assume this number would be part of the telecast as well.
It’s never a sure-thing that the broadcast will feature full performances of all the songs. In some recent years,...

Zap2it: What are you performing on PBS' New Year's Eve special, "Live From Lincoln Center - One Singular Sensation: Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch"?
Joshua Bell: It looks like I am going to perform the last piece, the only piece I have ever done with Marvin Hamlisch since it is going to be a tribute to him. We did an arrangement of "I'll Take Manhattan," and it looks like I will perform an arrangement of that, and it will be a fun surprise, and hopefully it will be a fun evening as well as bittersweet that Marvin passed away way too suddenly.
Zap2it: Haven't you spent New Year's Eve at Lincoln Center performing before?
Joshua Bell: I did once with Lorin Maazel, a few years ago ... [the years] go by so fast now.
I've done a lot of "Live From Lincoln Center." It will be fun to be in my...

The worlds of science and the arts -- which don't frequently intersect -- will meet tonight in New York, at the opening gala of the World Science Festival. Now in its second year, the festival is five days of events designed, according to its founders, to celebrate "imagination, ingenuity and creativity" and bring "science out of the laboratory and into the streets, theaters, museums and public halls" of New York. The gala tonight, at Alice Tully Hall, will feature a collaboration between the violinist Joshua Bell and Brian Greene, a festival founder, professor of mathematics and physics at Columbia University, and author of The Elegant Universe, a best-selling book on string theory. The collaboration, Greene said, "will describe in six minutes the history of our understanding of the universe, from the Big Bang to today. At key moments, I will...

World War II seems to be a bottomless well of inspiration for Hollywood, which isn’t without justification. When an international event touches the lives of so many, there are countless stories to be told. Unfortunately, there may be infinite stories of human determination and the indomitable human spirit, but thematically the sources aren’t quite so endless. Director Edward Zwick certainly found a compelling story in the Bielski brothers, but Defiance offers nothing that hasn’t already been found in stories like Lord of the Flies, Schindler’s List or even The Diary of Anne Frank. Defiance isn’t without creative merit; it just brings nothing new to the table.
Defiance starts with World War II raging around the Belarussian forests where Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber) and Asael Bielski (Jamie Bell) have taken refuge after their parents were slaughtered by men hired to hunt down Jews. The...

Beethoven and Bach could become the latest victims of the New York Times Co.'s financial crisis.
Rumors are raging that top suits have discussed putting classical radio station Wqxr (96.3 FM) on the block to shore up the company's dwindling cash stash, which, The Post reported last week, is down to $34 million after debts are weighed in. The Times itself is dropping sections and demanding huge cutbacks at The Boston Globe.
Allan Sniffen, who runs the influential New York Radio Message Board, told Page Six: "It would make sense for the New York Times, and the rumors that make the most sense usually have legs.

Defiance stars Daniel Craig as one of three Jewish rebels camping in the forests of Belarus to evade the Nazis. The Defiance soundtrack does not feature The Bloodhound Gang.
Very interesting, dramatic subject matter for a film. If it was directed by, oh, I don’t know, Fernando Meirelles (City of God, Constant Gardener), or maybe Jacques Audiard (The Beat That My Heart Skipped), or even Tommy Lee Jones after the work he did on Three Burials, it could really be something. But it’s directed by Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond was his most recent outing), who specialises in Hollywooding-up weighty socio-political subject matter so that you popcorn chompin’ masses out there don’t chew your own hands off from the unbearable boredom of going ten minutes without a chase sequence. The Defiance soundtrack isn’t exactly out of leftfield either.

"There’s a tendency, because the Beethoven (Violin Concerto) is played so often, to try to milk every moment and enforce music onto it. It becomes like an actor overacting a part... I tend to like to err on the side of letting the beauty come out, rather than inflicting an interpretation upon it."
