Instant Mom follows young party girl Stephanie (Mowry-Hardrict) who trades in cosmos for carpools when she marries an older man, Charlie (Michael Boatman), with three kids. Pilot season draws a lot of attention, but the process starts with pitching season. As Caitlin Foito, director of programming at Fox Television Studios, describes it, "Basically after upfronts, everyone starts getting in a position to hear pitches. Then right after pitch season is over, it becomes development season, and then around the holidays, all the scripts are coming in." Although cable networks don't have the same development cycle, they still "buy several scripts at a time and then typically look at them all together," says Warren Bell ("According to Jim"), who with his writing partner, Jessica Butler ("In Plain Sight"/Hollywood University), sold their pitch to Nickelodeon.Doing Your HomeworkThe process of pitching a TV pilot for writers is like the audition process for actors, so it's important to prepare for the meeting. Foito says writers should be aware of the marketplace before they go pitch—and that means knowing what's going.

The future of "Two and a Half Men" is, let's say, cloudy at the moment.
If we had to guess right now, we'd say that the show, which is currently the most-watched comedy on TV, will be back in some form -- with or without Charlie Sheen -- for 2011-12. CBS will announce its lineup for next season in mid-May, which means the network, Warner Bros. TV, creators Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn and Sheen have about two and a half months to figure out what happens next.
But what if the worst-case scenario for CBS happens and "Men" doesn't come back at all?
Yes, the network would probably suffer some in the ratings -- but it would probably also come out Ok. CBS also has the No. 2 and 3 comedies in terms of viewers in "The Big Bang Theory" and "Mike & Molly"; both shows are also in the Top 25 this...

Almost a year since it was first reported, Nicole Richie's TV show is back on the headline. The former reality star pitched an idea of a half-hour comedy about a "professional woman with complicated family relationships" but the project went stale for a year before ABC closes a new deal this month.
Deadline said ABC is moving on with the single-camera comedy and has assigned Jeff Rake ("Miss Match") to write the script. The original writer was Daisy Gardner ("Californication") under the supervision of Warren Bell. The Alphabet however retains Jamie Tarses' Fanfare and Sony TV as the producers. Together with Rakes, Tarses would be the executive producers.
Since Richie came up with the idea of the show, she would be credited as the producer along with her manager Michael Baum. No release date has been announced yet.

Fact About Me #1: I used to loathe Nicole Richie. I thought she was a total waste of space.
Fact About Me #2: Once she dumped Paris Hilton, cleaned up her act, had a couple babies and settled down I started to like her. Ok, maybe not like - but at least respect. She got a signature look going (boho chic), developed a jewelry line and gave her daughter a pretty cool name that wasn't too ridiculous. So it was all good.
Fact About Me #3: I don't like it when people who don't really have much acting talent (see: Paris, Ashlee Simpson, most reality stars) try to be actors. I get that people want to be famous. But I'm not an actress and I wouldn't foist myself on anyone, so why do these people keep insisting on appearing on television and in movies?
Now I'm trying to reconcile Facts #2 and #3. Because,...

The Hollywood socialite, 28, is developing an ABC sitcom in which she would both star and produce. Variety says the show will use a single camera, and the concept was Richie's idea. WASHINGTON -- President Bush used a recess appointment last week to thwart those in Congress who were holding up the nomination of outspoken conservative television sitcom producer Warren Bell to the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
The nomination was stalled by several members of the Senate Commerce Committee who fear Bell will inject more politics in the private nonprofit that distributes federal funds to public television and radio stations.
White House spokesman Tony Fratto said Bush believes Bell's 17 years of experience in network television give him the right credentials for the post.
Bell, executive producer of ABC's "According to Jim", said he hopes to strengthen public broadcasting during his time on the board.
