“It would be great to see it nominated,” says the A-list comedy actor Will Ferrell when, during a recording of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, we begin discussing the Oscar buzz surrounding “Husavik,” an original song featured in Ferrell’s recent Netflix vehicle Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, which Ferrell also co-wrote, with Andrew Steele, and David Dobkin directed.
The film’s entire musical score — coordinated by compilation producer Savan Kotecha and music supervisor Becky Bentham, and featuring additional tunes like “Volcano Man,” “Jaja Ding Dong, “Lion of Love” and “Double Trouble” — is impressive ...

Will Ferrell first became obsessed with the Eurovision Song Contest, the infamous international competition, about 20 years ago when he and his wife went to Sweden to visit her family. “It just happened to be the night of the finale and they all wanted to watch and as soon as I saw it I was like, ‘This is a movie!’” Ferrell adds. “I never acted on it because I was sure somebody was going to make it, at least in Europe. In the back of my brain, I was always thinking, ‘Why has no one made that movie yet?’”
About six years ago, Ferrell finally took it upon himself to co-write, with Andrew Steele, “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” a parody, homage and love letter to Eurovision. In the Netflix film, Ferrell plays an Icelandic dreamer named Lars, who has been obsessed with winning Eurovision, despite his limited talent.

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is bookended with one of Queen’s most iconic performances: a 20-minute set at Wembley Stadium outside of London for 1985’s Live Aid concert. Featuring some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Radio Ga Ga,” “We Are The Champions,” “We Will Rock You” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” recreating the scale of that record-breaking event — a sold-out crowd of 72,000 and a global TV audience of many millions — proved an equally enormous task for the filmmakers.
“The film starts with Freddie arriving at the stadium and there’s this long tracking shot of him from behind, as he walks from his dressing room through the backstage area and up to the stage, and pulls the curtain aside to look at the enormous crowd all waiting for them, and then we cut to the whole back story,” says Dp Newton Thomas Sigel. “So it sets up the dramatic arc of the whole film,...
