Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What is your favorite depiction of a monarch/royal character on TV?
*Yes, the monarch can be fictional and not based in our world. They can appear anywhere: historically adjacent dramas, cartoons, time-travel shows, fantasy series, comedies, sci-fi series, etc. They just need to rule!
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
This question has provoked a lot of anxiety, because where do I even start? First with the classic choices: Claire Foy is exceptional in “The Crown,” of course, but Jodie Comer was really dazzling in “The White Princess.” George Blagden and Alexander Vlahos make “Versailles’” French court a delight, and Tom Hiddleston was swoon-worthy perfection as the young playboy Hal who becomes the venerable Henry V in “The Hollow Crown.” And then fictional as well? We have to consider...

Joan Bergin faces massive challenges being in charge of the costumes for "Vikings." She must clothe vast armies of clashing barbarians plus medieval nobles fond of wrapping themselves in finery. All of these outfits must be historically accurate duds that vow TV viewers and, while she's at it, impress Emmy voters. -Break- "Episodic television is merciless," she says in our webcam chat. (Watch below) "You just finish a war on one day and it's a banquet on a Wednesday. You do have to keep going." What helps to keep Bergin going is a large staff operating a shop devoted to costume creation and research. "History Channel has granted me the great gift of a dye room that we devote to R&D medieval work," she says. "The colors used back then were so strange. They almost completely marry with what you find in nature." Very few artifacts survive from ancient Viking culture,...

Ashford, Ireland — If historical fiction guru Michael Hirst has his way, a legendary Viking raider named Ragnar soon will conquer North America on behalf of the History channel.
History's ambitious Dark Ages drama "Vikings," debuting Sunday after five months of filming in Ireland, dramatizes the myth-cloaked story of Ragnar Lothbrok, leader of a Viking people typically depicted as horn-helmeted brutes.
Here's one pointed clue that "Vikings" aims to smash a few stereotypes along with English skulls: There's not a horned head in sight because real Vikings never actually wore them.
This lavishly produced nine-parter, the biggest production ever commissioned by History with a reported budget of $40 million, seeks to get viewers rooting for the Norsemen even as they butcher defenseless Christians and loot their way through Europe. With a cast including Gabriel Byrne, the series debuts on History Sunday at 10 p.m. Est after another big History miniseries, "The Bible.

Acclaimed director Martin Scorsese concocts a cracking children’s fantasy in homage to silent movie magician Georges Méliès; his beloved Hugo barely drops a cog in its methodically realised mechanical world.
Scorsese has unmistakably made a children’s movie. Some may argue not as it is crammed full of references to early moving pictures that only adults could probably recognise. Yet Scorsese’s purpose, like that of his hero Méliès, is to entertain and inform. For all the po-faced wittering by cinema scholars that Hugo is meant for them, one has to wonder if deep down Scorsese really cares if any adults see the film at all.
The blue of the Station Inspector's uniform is deliberately intensified.

Does Japanese period costume reflect on contemporary fashion? French born writer Aurélie Coulibaly appraises the hipster style of Norwegian Wood.
Youth, love, Japan, 1960s; Norwegian Wood (2010, directed by Anh Hung Tran) is a fable on loss and growing up. Set from the summer of ’67 through to a spring morning just a few years later, somewhere between child and adulthood, we meet an assorted group of angelic characters to move any sensitive soul.
We are in Tokyo, and along with the hectic political context of students’ protests against established order, alternatively contemplating tormented Naoko (Rinko Kikushi) and youthful Midori (Kiko Mizuhara) in their intense, yet poetic relationship with Toru Watanabe (Kenichi Matsuyama). All are beautiful and secretive, ethereally flowing over the troubled waters of adolescence. Costume designer Yen Khe Luguern (first credit for a feature movie) selected different characteristics of 60?s fashion to subtly highlight the protagonists’ personalities. Khe Luguern’s...

Here is an extract from an enlightening interview with Ann Roth, costume designer of Working Girl (1988), The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) and now 1930s set TV drama Mildred Pierce starring Kate Winslet. Read the full interview over at Harper’s Bazaar to learn why costume design is definitely Not fashion design.
Interestingly, Ann Roth touches upon a similar point made by The Tudors’ costume designer Joan Bergin in our exclusive interview. Bergin explains that, like Roth, she creates for characters, not catwalk. This is a common misconception of the costume designer’s role. Sometimes there is overlap, intentional or not, but costumes are intended to serve the narrative; any allusion to contemporary fashion is either intentional (if it is part of the plot, say with The Devil Wears Prada) or inferred by the audience.

Clothes on Film talk exclusively to Emmy award winning costume designer Joan Bergin about her extraordinary work on The Tudors, discussing codpieces, modern day fashion influences, nipples and more. It’s video so you won’t even need your reading glasses.
The Tudors, or Dynasty with ruffs if you will, is a four season period drama series starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers as King Henry VIII, perhaps England’s most eligible monarch in history (on paper at least). His stunning clothes of silk brocade and leather were made by costume designer Joan Bergin (The Prestige). The sheer scale of the project was incredible, with cast of 110 and countless extras requiring, in Joan’s own words, ‘Tudorising’.

The Costume Designers Guild also honored excellence in television at their 13th annual awardsfest Tuesday. John Dunn and Lisa Padovani -- the talented twosome who crafted the costumes for the depression era drama "Boardwalk Empire" -- stopped the two-year winning streak of Janie Bryant for recreating the look of the swinging sixties in "Mad Men." They also beat reigning Emmy champ Joan Bergin ("The Tudors"). The colorful costumes designed by Lou Eyrich for "Glee" won the contemporary prize for the second year in a row. And Cindy Evans, who was snubbed at the Emmys, prevailed for the TV movie "Temple Grandin." So, the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) has served up their nominations for this year. Apart from falling short on numbers in a couple of categories, the line-up is predictably safe.
Excellence in Contemporary Film
Black Swan – Amy Westcott
Burlesque – Michael Kaplan
Inception – Jeffrey Kurland
The Social Network – Jacqueline West
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps – Ellen Mirojnick
There has been recent hoopla in the press regarding Rodarte’s overall involvement with the costume design for Black Swan, though the Costume Designers Guild will be unlikely to run scared. Shouldn’t The Social Network strictly be in the Period category, however? Jacqueline West went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the film was historically accurate, something often harder to achieve when the setting is recent.
Excellence in Period Film
The Fighter – Mark Bridges
The King’s Speech – Jenny Beavan
True Grit – Mary Zophres

Irish costume designer, Joan Bergin, and wardrobe supervisor, Susan O'Connor Cave, won an Emmy on Saturday night at the Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, for their work on "The Tudors". Filming of the final series, of the hugely popular period drama, has recently been completed in Ardmore Studios, Wicklow. The drama starred Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry VIII, James Frain and Henry Cavill amongst others. This is Bergin's third Emmy for Outstanding Costumes. She won her first, also for "The Tudors" in 2008. In 2007 both, Bergin and O'Connor Cave, along with costume supervisors Ger Scully and Jessica O'Leary won awards. Other winners on the night included the ever popular, former "Golden Girl" Betty White. She took home her fifth Emmy for her appearance on "Saturday Night Live". The biggest winner of the night was the HBO miniseries "The Pacific" along with "Modern Family". "Glee" took home two awards...

I've neglected to mention that Our Miss Anne Hathaway is now an Emmy winner. (The Emmys have so many hundreds of categories, that they have to start weeks before the actual show in passing them out.) Next step: Oscar... or maybe Tony? (she did get bang up reviews for her theater gig in Twelfth Night, too) Yay! She won the prize for her Simpsons voicework in the episode "Once Upon a Time in Springfield."
Voicework for The Simpsons is always a good idea for actors.

Production gets underway next week at Ireland's Ardmore Studios on the historical television drama series 'Camelot'. Worth an estimated $32million to the Irish industry, the ten part series will film in Ireland for 22 weeks. Irish director Ciaran Donnelly takes the helm for the first two episodes and will be followed by Canadian director Jeremy Podeswa - both directors worked on 'The Tudors' with Donnelly winning an Ifta for his efforts in 2009. Degrassi: The Next Generation has a long history of prominent gay characters and this season is no exception. Earlier this year we met Riley Stavros, a teenager struggling with his sexuality, unable to accept that he is gay. With an episode featuring Riley set to air this week on The N, we decided to chat via e-mail with Argiris Karras, who plays the troubled young man, to get his thoughts on his role.

AfterElton.com: Tell us something about yourself. How old are you? Where are you from? What do you do for fun? What kind of music do you listen to?
Argiris Karras: I'm 19 years old and I was born in Toronto, Ontario, one of the greatest cities around!
For fun I often chill with my friends and do a whole bunch of random things such as play soccer and video games, watch movies and listen to music.
