One of the most unassuming filmmakers of Britain’s early period, Michael Powell entered the golden age of his career with The Edge of the World. Though he had already made over 20 films by 1937, it represented one of his first successfully realized and self-actualized stabs at what would become one of his chief directorial strengths: the ability to film a very specific and localized environment in a manner that emphasizes its otherworldly fantasias and, paradoxically, remains faithful to the area’s ethnographical features.
To watch the film is to bear witness to Powell’s unique alchemy. Throughout, he infuses a weather-battered island community off the coast of Scotland on the verge of abandonment with off-kilter camera angles, dreamily gauzy cinematography, and a becalmed detachment that lets the characters and scenario do the work for him.
Which isn’t to say that Powell occasionally indulges in a few melodramatic flourishes that...

Yet another 3-D Blu-ray treat — the 3-D Film Archive restores a rare English production, an international crime tale in 3-D. Dennis O’Keefe’s T-Man helps Scotland Yard track down a gang of smugglers that kidnaps and murders to force an Atom scientist to perfect his manufacturing formula for synthetic diamonds. You know, just like the silicon chip business. The widescreen 3-D is excellent, especially in two action set pieces. Margaret Sheridan co-stars. It’s almost a premiere, as the movie was never publicly exhibited in 3-D. Kino also provides an anaglyphic encoding with a pair of red-cyan glasses as an alternate 3-D option. Plus good extras about the 3-D process.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story creator Ryan Murphy has hit back at claims that he did not reach out to victims’ families prior to the show’s release on Netflix, which resulted in what one victim’s family member called a “retraumatizing” of the events.
Following Monster’s release in Sept., several victims’ family members turned to social media to criticize the show for not only turning their tragedy into entertainment — but not even warning them ahead of time.
However, speaking at an event Thursday in Los Angeles, Murphy insisted...

"McNabb to the Skins ... wow! I think this will be a great thing for all involved, except the Eagles. One reason is because I don't think Andy Reid was ready to part ways with the soon-to-be 34-year-old veteran. He still had a year left on paper with the Eagles. And though I don't think they would've given him an extension, for some reason I think Andy would've liked to see Donovan play it out. I don't think he was the brains behind that move. I think this was above him."

Months ago, Lil Wayne expressed his hope that he'd be able to keep up with sports while serving his yearlong prison sentence at Rikers Island. Apparently, the wish of Birdman Jr. — who actually has a tattoo of the Espn logo — has been fulfilled. On Wednesday (April 14), Wayne updated his new blog, WeezyThanxYou.com, with his latest observations.
First up, Wayne says he thinks the Philadelphia Eagles dropped the ball by trading star Qb Donovan McNabb to division rivals the Washington Redskins.
