Stars: Olivia Luccardi, William Baldwin, Sam Quartin, Owen Campbell, Virginia Rand, Guinevere Turner, Eden Brolin | Written and Directed by John Swab
Whilst it’s set in 1996, Candy Land reminds me very much of the 70s exploitation era of filmmaking, where the lines between genres blurred and a wide variety of subject matter was explored by filmmakers willing to take chances on stories that the mainstream wouldn’t tell… The latter of which is certainly the case here as writer/director John Swab tells the story of Remy (Olivia Luccardi; It Follows), a seemingly naive and devout young woman, who finds herself cast out from her religious cult. With no place to turn, she immerses herself into the underground world of truck stop sex workers a.k.a. “lot lizards,” courtesy of her hosts, Sadie (Sam Quartin; Body Brokers), Riley (Eden Brolin; Yellowstone), Liv (Virginia Rand) and Levi (Owen Campbell; X...

Trucks for victory! No deadheads on this run! Bald Tires for Adolf! Budd Boetticher’s two-fisted teamsters haul General Patton’s supplies through a France not completely cleared of German resistance, a gearshift in one hand and a buxom mam’selle in the other. The movie is not bad, especially in the casting department — it least includes some black troopers to portray a mixed outfit that was more than half black. Red Ball Roughneck roll call: Jeff Chandler, Sidney Poitier, Alex Nicol, Hugh O’Brian, Charles Drake, Bubber Johnson, Davis Roberts. At Ease.

November 19th is shaping up to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases, but that doesn’t mean there still isn’t a lot to get excited about. Synapse Films is giving Dario Argento’s Suspiria the 4K treatment this Tuesday, and it looks to be a must-own release for any genre fan. Scream Factory is resurrecting The Fan (1981) on Blu, and for those of you who are into cautionary horror, you’ll definitely want to pick up Arrow Video’s release of Hitch Hike To Hell.
Other releases for November 19th include Abbott & Costello: The Complete Universal Pictures Collection (which includes their genre crossovers), Farscape: The Complete Series, Memory: The Origin of Alien (a documentary that is a must-see for anyone who enjoys Ridley Scott’s 1979 masterpiece), and a 20th anniversary Blu celebrating the criminally overlooked Jawbreaker.

Hitchhike To Hell will be available on Blu-ray November 19th From Arrow Video
Be careful who you hitch a ride with! All roads lead to terror in Hitch Hike to Hell, the delightfully sleazy cautionary tale from cult director Irvin Berwick.
Howard is a mild-mannered momma’s boy whose job running deliveries for a cleaning agency affords him a lot of time out on the road. It s not until he picks up young women who’ve run away from home that he transforms into a twitching, homicidal maniac, hellbent on meting out punishment for their transgressions. Can the cops put a stop to Howard s demented spree before he claims yet another victim?
Influenced by the depraved crimes of the likes of ”Co-ed Killer” Edmund Kemper, Hitch Hike to Hell is a bonafide American nightmare from the vaults of legendary exploitation producer Harry Novak.

Glurg garrgle gurgle raaaaw! It's the razor-clawed reptile-man that scared the bejesus out of little kids, way back when. Jack Kevan's basic monster mash drags its feet a bit, but technically it's as slick as they come. Plus, the encoding is perfect. And did I mention the scary parts? This one inspired plenty of gory nightmares. 'Worst Movie Ever?' No way. But neither is Wayne Berwick and comic Jackie Vernon's tacky cannibalism tale a piece of art. When I say it's interesting, it's more as a study item than entertainment.
