Maria Grasso, senior vp drama development at WB Network, could be making her way to Lifetime Television to head development at the women's-themed cable network, sources said Wednesday. The move would reunite Grasso with her former colleague Susanne Daniels, a former president of entertainment at WB Network who joined Lifetime in September in the same capacity. Lifetime and WB declined comment. Lifetime has seen several changes in its executive ranks over the past year, starting with the news in November that Lifetime Entertainment Services president and CEO Carole Black was resigning at the expiration of her contract.

Former Cartoon Network chief Betty Cohen has been tapped as the new president and CEO of Lifetime Entertainment Services, ending months of speculation about who would fill the void left by the resignation of Carole Black. Cohen is stepping into the position vacated March 21 by Black, who announced in November that she would resign when her contract expired(HR 11/9). The selection of Cohen came as a surprise to many in the industry, even those who kept tabs on the Lifetime board's search for a successor to Black. In her new post, Cohen will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the powerhouse Lifetime brand, including advertising sales, affiliate sales, research, programming, strategic planning and operations. She'll oversee Lifetime Television, Lifetime Movie Network, Lifetime Real Women, Lifetime Radio for Women, Lifetime Home Entertainment and Lifetime Online. Cohen, who officially assumes the post April 26, said it's too early to talk about any new strategy she has for the network.
"Make time for poetry" and never forget to revel in "the sheer joy of being" -- those were some of the words of wisdom Annette Bening shared with a ballroom full of high-powered executives Tuesday as the Oscar-nominated actress delivered the keynote address at the annual Women in Entertainment breakfast hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and Lifetime Television at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Bening's humanistic entreaties brought an uplifting tone to a morning that included a few emotional good-byes -- to outgoing Paramount Pictures chairman Sherry Lansing and Lifetime president and CEO Carole Black -- and a call for women to use their hard-won power in areas far beyond showbiz delivered by The Reporter editor-in-chief and publisher Robert J. Dowling. "You have achieved parity" in the entertainment business, Dowling said. "Now you have to strive to do more, to be more, to deliver more. ... You are the power. What is that power? It's the power to influence people. It's the one power that truly rules and it's arguably the most sought-after power in the world. You make the products that not only penetrate the world but also have a profound influence on it."...

After being dragged from her home and raped in the woods in broad daylight, Debbie Smith devoted herself to passing legislation that would fund DNA testing to help authorities find and convict rapists. And she got a lot of help rallying support for her cause from an unlikely source: Lifetime Television. In a rare tactic for a commercial television outfit in the business of generating ratings, Lifetime has made advocacy, education and bipartisan legislative campaigns on women's issues an integral part of its on-air profile and corporate culture. And during the past five years, as Lifetime has been on a roll as one of the top general entertainment cablers under the leadership of Carole Black, the network -- celebrating its 20th anniversary this year -- has intensified its advocacy and legislative work of behalf of women. On Monday, Lifetime hosted a breast cancer heroes luncheon in Beverly Hills honoring survivors of the disease including the mothers of Eric McCormack, Christina Applegate and Carson Daly. And tonight, Lifetime is taping its fifth annual WomenRock! concert, featuring such performers as Kelly Clarkson and Blondie, to raise awareness for breast cancer. It will air Oct. 28 on the network.
