Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

When we learned of Bill Hader’s departure from Saturday Night Live last May, we mourned the loss of Hader classics like Herb Welch, James Carville and of course, a little New York club-hopping aficionado named Stefon. And we’ll only continue to mourn his exit as SNL comes back on air.
But in the meantime, we can accompany Hader on his trip down memory lane in his latest Q&A with The Daily Beast. In it, the SNL veteran shares some of his favorite moments from his eight years on the show, from meeting Kanye West after his first...

Andrew reviews the terrific new Doctor Who: Regeneration DVD compendium, featuring previously unreleased story, The Tenth Planet...
There's something inherently odd about the concept of a Doctor Who coffee-table-style DVD compendium, as if those people who wear hats indoors have been identified as an untapped market ready and willing to critically examine Time and the Rani as a Kierkegaardian polemic. Still, it's a nice shiny binder, and it's got The Tenth Planet in it.
Previously unreleased on DVD, The Tenth Planet is presented here with the other regeneration stories (though no extras), and episode four is entirely animated to complete one of the more important stories in the show's history. The animation is easy to accept, blending in well with the existing footage and providing us with some striking images of the Cybermen (here in their Spare Parts, hulking relic stage of development...

Gene Sperling is White House point man for what may be the most delicate negotiations of the Obama presidency. Lloyd Grove reports on the latest turns in the debt-ceiling drama.
Gene Sperling-a key White House player in the bipartisan negotiations to raise the federal debt ceiling-is a devotee of the iron fist/velvet glove school of politics.
As President Obama's top economic adviser, he had a hand in the recent presidential speech that trashed House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's deficit reduction plan as a savage attack on old folks, college students, disabled kids and sick people, as well as an obscene gift to millionaires and billionaires.
Sperling loved that speech.
Ryan, not so much. An invited guest who sat in the front row at George Washington University during the speech, the congressman was at first surprised, then angry as he listened to Obama demonizing him and...

Bp oil rig engineer Blair Manuel was not even supposed to be working when he and 10 co-workers were killed in the Gulf of Mexico explosion a year ago. His daughter tells Rick Outzen the anniversary is about honoring her father, not lawsuits or pointing fingers.
What haunts the family of Blair Manuel is that he wasn't supposed to be on the Deepwater Horizon rig when it exploded the night of April 20, 2010. He was due to be off the weekend before the accident, but something happened with his replacement and he agreed to stay through the 20th.

Before Libyans rose up against him, Muammar Gaddafi used money, and well-timed diplomatic overtures, to worm his way into the West's good graces. In this week's Newsweek, Christopher Dickey looks at how Bush, Blair, and Berlusconi gave the brutal dictator a makeover.
The tale is a sordid one, but let's at least begin in relatively pleasant surroundings, among the leather armchairs of the Travellers Club in London. Its rooms have been a favorite rendezvous since the 19th century for gentlemen of international intrigue-and it's where Libya's urbane, white-haired spymaster, Musa Kusa, met with representatives of the British and American intelligence services in December 2003. Their purpose was to hammer out a deal to bring Kusa's boss, Muammar Gaddafi, in from the cold.

The elite Choate boarding school is embroiled in a tabloid-ready scandal, involving catty Facebook postings about students drinking and taking drugs.
The elite Choate Rosemary Hall boarding school has long been a destination for the rich and fabulous, with so many big-name graduates and booted preppies-jfk, Ivanka Trump, a Bhutan royal, Ali MacGraw, Edward Albee, and Michael Douglas, to name a few-that it seems like an East Coast cauldron of money-meets-Hollywood-meets-international glamour.

The effort to rescue 29 miners trapped in New Zealand is now on hold because of fears there will be a second blast. Greer McDonald on the families' anguish and two brothers-one trapped, the other blown clear.
In the small, remote mining community on New Zealand's West Coast, news of the explosion at a coal mine that trapped 29 people underground was received with dread.

Many people here in Greymouth work in the mines or have loved ones who do.
For the Rockhouse family, the accident at the Pike River mine brought both heartache and relief: one son is still trapped underground while another son was one of the two survivors after Friday's explosion.
Daniel, a 24-year-old coal-load driver, received only moderate injuries in the blast, and was discovered unconscious by an electrician who went to investigate the cause of a power outage.

There are reviews branded from the start with some karmic curse, I got the print of Fever night in January, we are in June, it went through ten rewrites, 6 screenings and a total system crash. When it happens with a romcom or something light and cheerful, it is a series of coincidences, but what can we call such a succession of avatars when it comes to a movie dealing with the Beast, the Horned One, the good old Satan? Is it retribution? Or the wrath of an angry God at how good this movie is?
Let’s place our protagonists, there’s Terry, Elliot and Warren. Terry loves Elliot. Warren loves Terry and Elliot. Elliot loves Elliot. He used to love Terry. And when Warren decides to...

There's a frightening number of fall horror DVDs coming out the closer we get to Halloween. I've compiled a sampling in no particular order of just some of the many, many new releases coming soon to a DVD shelf near you in September and October.
Genius Entertainment will release Never Cry Werewolf (review) on September 16th. Originally premiering on the Sci-Fi Channel back in May, Nina Dobrev ("Degrassi: The Next Generation") stars as a young woman who requires the help of a slightly inept TV hunting show host Kevin Sorbo ("Hercules: The Legendary Journeys") in dealing with the werewolf who just moved in next door. To say that the film is derivative of Fright Night would be an understatement. Fortunately, it's actually not all that bad. You can find out more by reading my review, the one I accidentally submitted the uncorrected version of with all manner of typos and...
