This week's DVD and Blu-ray releases are definitely on the slim side, but there are still a few gems worth your attention, including a National Geographic documentary that explores centuries of vampire lore and legend, unearthing new science and insights on superstition and psychology ... all with nary a sparkle in sight!
Unquestionably the pick of the week is Shutter Island. If you missed it in theatres, now's your chance to watch some real masters at work. Scorsese. DiCaprio. It's obvious both are still in their prime. As an added treat there's Michelle Williams, who manages to do quite a lot with a very small role.
So, what else do we have coming on June 8th? How about Reggie Bannister in Metal Man as Dr. Arthur Blake, a bio-mech engineer who is murdered by evil weapons dealer Sebastian Reed, who uses ninja henchmen and his ultimate secret weapon, the Mecha Terror robot,...

IFC Films released the official artwork and DVD details for the film “I Sell the Dead” by director Glenn McQuaid and starring Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Angus Scrimm (Phantasm). Synopsis: It was a time of ghouls, ghosts and most ghastly of all, the fine art of grave-robbing. Dominic Monaghan of Lord of the Rings and Flash Forward stars as 19th century corpse snatcher Arthur Blake, who pilfered the cemeteries and coffins of England until his capture by police. But just before Blake is to meet the hangman’s noose, he will confess to a peculiar priest (Ron Perlman of Hellboy and Sons of Anarchy) his gruesome tale of vampires, zombies [...]...

I Sell the Dead, the first feature by Glenn McQuaid, opens with grave-robber Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) telling a priest (Ron Perlman) about how he met friend and co-worker Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden, reprising his role from McQuaid's original short, The Resurrection Apprentice, on which this movie's based). Told with lengthy flashbacks, the story follows Arthur and Willie from regular grave-robbing to "ghouling." The difference? Grave-robbers will only steal the dead, but ghouls will steal "just about anything." They find vampires, aliens, zombies — all sorts of undead creatures and spooks, for which they can make a whole lotta moolah.
Everything's going swimmingly until Fanny (Brenda Cooney, who also appeared in The Resurrection Apprentice), Arthur's lady friend, gets involved. Smelling big money, she convinces Arthur and Willie to embark on a dangerous mission: steal a gig from a rival gang, the House of Murphy — Cornelius (John Speredakos), the man so mean...

Talk about shovel ready jobs. A bumbling pair of Burke and Hare wannabes has some comedic adventures in this gravely amusing film. If you.re a horror fan this horror/comedy will remind you of those Corman Poe films as well as give you a chuckle and a healthy burst of nostalgia. Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden) has just has his appointment with the guillotine. His partner/protégé Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) sits in a cell and awaits his execution by the same. However, he.s been given five hours grace by Father Duffy (Ron Perlman). The good father has arrived to take his confession as to how he.s gotten into this pickle. Blake recounts his graverobbing ways and his associations...

I Sell the Dead made a move to DVD and Blu-Ray today, with extras now available. The film stars Dominic Monaghan (Lost), Larry Fessenden (Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever), Angus Scrimm (Wishmaster), and Ron Pearlman (Dark Country) as two grave robbers who bite off too much of the supernatural to chew. Bonus features run the gamut of cast and director commentaries to making of featurettes (visual effects). A blend of the comedic, action, and horror genres, I Sell the Dead was one of the better releases from 2009. More details on this title below.
The synopsis for I Sell the Dead here:

Larry Fessenden and his production company, Glass Eye Pix, along with their low-budget horror sideline, Scareflix, have been making some of the best indie horror to come out in recent years.
From Ti West’s The Roost in 2005 and the highly acclaimed The House of the Devil in 2009 to Glenn McQuaid’s current period horror/comedy I Sell the Dead, voted Best Indie Film of 2009 by Rue Morgue magazine, Fessenden is on course to being one of the most in-demand producers/directors as well as actors in the 21st Century (check out his IMDb resume – he’s been in everything from the mainstream hit The Brave One with Jodie Foster to the cult horror favorite Session 9).
Dread Central recently interviewed the affable Fessenden about I Sell the Dead as well as future projects which, according to Larry, just may include his script for the remake of The Orphanage.

The stellar I Sell the Dead (review here) is finally hitting DVD and Blu-ray on March 30th, and in honor of the occasion Dread Central will be running a series of interviews with several members of the cast and crew. First up is writer/director Glenn McQuaid.
Elaine Lamkin: First, I have to say how surprised I was when during the behind-the-scenes featurette on the DVD someone mentioned that The Scratcher pub in the East Village, which doubled for the interiors of The Fortune of War pub in I Sell the Dead, is owned by Irish actor, Karl Geary, whom I interviewed for his role in The Burrowers! The film world, particularly the indie film world, can be very small.
Glenn McQuaid: It's a small world all right, especially when you're working in the horror genre. Karl's a fellow Dubliner, too, but it's through his acting that I know him.

One of the cooler genre related flicks to come out this last year was Glenn McQuaid's quirky horror/comedy I Sell The Dead , starring Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman, Larry Fessenden and Angus Scrimm. The film follows Arthur Blake (Monaghan), a man awaiting execution who confesses to Father Duffy (Perlman) about his graverobbing exploits with Willie Grimes (Fessenden) and the trouble that ensued from their profession. Director: Glenn McQuaid. Review: Adam P. Combining zombies, aliens, grave robbing, and lots of dark humor, I Sell the Dead is a bizarre and interesting gem of a film. Much like Army of Darkness, this film combines the undead with the dark ages, and sprinkles on the laughs as a nice garnish. The film opens with one of the lead characters, Willy Grimes (Larry Fessenden), being be-headed by means of a guillotine. We then see his partner in crime Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) sitting in the prison waiting for his turn to be executed. A priest, played by Ron Perlman, visits Blake to record his final thoughts before he meets his maker. The rest of the film is told through Blake’s words, as he describes the awful sort of profession he and his partner partook. He recounts everything from the first grave he robbed, to the first time the...

If you loved the adventures of 18th-century graverobbers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes in Glenn McQuaid’s I Sell The Dead, or are just waiting for the acclaimed movie to make its DVDebut, you’ll want to pick up the comic-book adaptation that hits stores tomorrow from Image Comics. The adapatation was written by McQuaid himself, with art by Brahm Revel.
Image’s I Sell The Dead features 40 full-color pages reconting Blake and Grimes’ adventures among the living, the dead and the living dead, with an additional five pages on the art of the movie. Revel did design work on the feature as well as producer Larry Fessenden’s directorial efforts Wendigo and The Last Winter, and illustrated comics versions of those films too. As an Irishman who’s never set foot in Ireland, I’m sort of obsessed with all things Irish. So I was ecstatic to find out I Sell The Dead was written and directed a real, live Irishman, from Ireland, with the accent, the pale (I call it “royal”) complexion, and the Guinness addiction—Glenn McQuaid. Let the stalking begin!
The press has had a field day with McQuaid’s film (including Fangoria; you can watch a nice “Making of…” feaurette and read a “Director’s Statement” here) McQuaid and the film are basically omnipresent in the horror and mainstream press at the moment, which is awesome…

Are you looking to round out your Summer with a campy "horror" movie? Look no further than I Sell the Dead. This amusing film, written and directed by Glenn McQuaid, follows the recollections of a young grave robber named Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) on the eve of his execution.
Set in 18th century England (some of our group thought Ireland), the general campy tone of the movie is hinted to early on when Father Duffy (Ron Perlman) is on his way to hear Blake's confessions and passes what appears to be the skeletal remains of a chihuahua in the dungeon. In recounting how he became a grave robber, we are treated to humorous flashbacks of how Blake became a grave robber and, later, a "ghoul" - one who acquired and sells the undead. We soon discover that Blake and his grave robbing partner, Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden) are up against...

Thank you, Glenn McQuaid, for letting us laugh at the desecration of holy ground again. Shot on a tight budget, with New York City -- mostly Staten Island -- standing in for the British Isles in the nineteenth century, I Sell the Dead has pretty much nothing going for it except a neat cast, plus the visual inventiveness and sheer, audacious wit of its director, Mr. McQuaid. Fortunately, that's more than enough. Essentially a depiction of what would happen if Laurel and Hardy had to stoop to a less-savory profession to make their living, the film tells the tale of Arthur Blake (Lost's Dominic Monaghan) and Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden, better known as the director of such films as Wendigo), two legendary grave robbers who specialize in the acquisition and redistribution of, shall we say, product that is very dead yet also...

A Statement from the Director of I Sell The Dead:
A few years back I made a short film called The Resurrection Apprentice. A simple story of a young boy’s first night on the job as a grave-robber. I’ve always been fascinated with the fog-drenched, blood-soaked films of Amicus and Hammer. The short was an homage to that sort of thing.

If it were a 30-minute comic episode of The Twilight Zone, this ambitious low-budget flick might not have overstayed its welcome, but dragged out to three times that running time, it cannot help but be more miss than hit. On the eve of his execution for graverobbing and murder, Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan: X-Men Origins: Wolverine) confesses his sorry tale of desperation and skullduggery to Father Francis Duffy (Ron Perlman: Hellboy II: The Golden Army), though he insists he’s guilty only of snatching them what’s already dead, and not himself making anybody dead at all. Episodes of Arthur’s life with partner-in-crime Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden [Wendy and Lucy], also a producer of the film) unfold in a series of flashbacks that, when they do hit, play like a Sam Raimi fever dream...

Larry Fessenden's gap-toothed, shaggy-haired mug makes a memorable impression onscreen (Broken Flowers, The Brave One), and besides also being the cult filmmaker behind socially relevant horror gems like The Last Winter and Habit, Fessenden is a generous producer, too. For 20+ years, his production company Glass Eye Pix has helped emerging filmmakers get their projects off the ground, with a roster that includes Kelly Reichardt, Ira Sachs and Ti West (whose fantastically creepy The House of the Devil comes out later this year). Fessenden's latest production under his Scareflix horror banner is the morbidly entertaining I Sell the Dead, written and directed by former visual effects artist Glenn McQuaid, here playing homage to Hammer Studios, EC Comics and Young Frankenstein: Never trust a corpse. 19th century justice has finally caught up to grave robbers Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) and Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden). When January rolled around, I was all ready to throw in the towel and declare 2009 a wash for movies in general. I'll tell you what, though. I continue to be surprised by some of this year's offerings and some of last year's that are finally making their way to me through the festivals. Though I haven't kept a best of the year list in several years because of how much of a pain in the ass those lists tend to be when there's nothing much worth talking about, I have been keeping one this year that began with Drag Me To Hell. I am now adding I Sell The Dead to that list, a flick I'd heard about but knew very little of. Glass Eye Pix has been hanging around for a while with a bunch of pictures in development for what seems like forever and now it would seem...

If you ever felt there was a need to extend the Bring Out Your Dead scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it looks like writer/director Glenn McQuaid is delivering. I Sell the Dead is a horror comedy which recounts the exploits of a grave robber confessing to a priest on the eve of his execution. According to the official synopsis, Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) tells his story growing up in the trade, joining forces with the master ghoul Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden), and, you know, fighting off the not-quite-dead monsters that go bump in the graveyard. According to the trailer, it looks awesome. And hilarious: There's not a lot of dialog, but I imagine the movie will have a lot of dry conversations. However, the story sounds really intriguing, and a lot of the adventure could easily be played for laughs. And yes, that was Ron Perlman as the priest. This...

Starring Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman, Angus Scrimm and Larry Fessenden, the Slamdance Film Festival selection will hit limited theaters and VOD on August 14. In the film, body Snatchers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes have pillaged their last grave. With just five hours before Arthur follows Willie to the chopping block, he recounts his life story to Fr Francis Duffy. It soon becomes clear that Blake and Grimes were no ordinary grave robbers. And through his stories the priest learns that not all corpses are equal.

• New York City’s IFC Center (323 6th Avenue) is hosting a series of screenings of the top award-winners from this year’s Slamdance Film Festival. Included among the four features is Glenn McQuaid’s highly anticipated I Sell The Dead, which took the fest’s prize for Best Cinematography.
The film stars Lost’s Dominic Monaghan and NYC horror auteur Larry Fessenden (pictured; the latter won a Special Jury Mention for Best Performance and executive-produced Dead under his Scareflix banner) as 18th-century graverobbers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes, whom the law has caught up with. As he faces execution, Blake confesses to Father Duffy (Ron Perlman) about his 15 years of often grisly adventures in the “resurrection” trade. I Sell The Dead will screen Monday, March 30 at 8 p.m.; each film in the series will have select filmmakers and Slamdance programmers on hand for a post-show Q&A. See the trailer...

When I first heard that there is a movie called I Sell the Dead, I’d assumed it to be a metaphorical title. Perhaps it’s a psychological thriller about a dying man bargaining his last days; could be a sensitive drama about an Emt’s career guilt; or maybe it’s an allegorical fantasy that examines the link between modern consumerism and the death of the American dream!
But no, it’s just a movie about two guys who sell zombies to mad scientists. Feh.
Okay, so maybe it’s not the Bergmanesque examination on mortality one assume must be hiding behind such a simple explanatory titling, but what I Sell the Dead lacks in existential tableau, it makes up for in goofy fun. The film opens in Victorian England with the guillotine execution of grave robber Willie Grimes (a grimy Larry Fessenden). His partner Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan,...

In a fog-enshrouded graveyard is where Glenn McQuaid feels at home. One can sense this when he talks about directing the horror-comedy I Sell the Dead . He recalls the first time he saw his characters, grave robbers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes, on set, in character and surrounded by cemetery plots, with enthusiasm. One can also get the vibe that he's old school. Dropping names like Freddie Francis and Terence Fisher is serious business and a rarity for upcoming directors these days who often cite genre influences from the '80s. I'm chatting with director McQuaid, and producer/co-star Larry Fessenden, days before I Sell the Dead makes its Slamdance Film Festival premiere on January 16th. Set in the 18th century, Dead finds Fessenden and Dominic Monaghan ( Lost )...

Positive notice has been following I Sell the Dead , Glenn McQuaid's horror-comedy which has led a nomadic life the last six months plays to festival audiences. On January 16th, the film opens at the Slamdance Film Festival and in anticipation of its bow there we've received a number of hi-res stills featuring cast members Larry Fessenden, Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman and director McQuaid. Fessenden and Monaghan play body Snatchers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes. With just five hours before Arthur follows Willie to the chopping block, he recounts his life story to Fr. Francis Duffy. It soon becomes clear that Blake and Grimes were no ordinary grave robbers. And through his stories the priest learns that not all corpses are equal. Toronto correspondent, Nelson, spoke highly...

Though the marquee has now gone dim on the third annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival, the eight-day cult cinema celebration managed to close out its run with one final slice of silly, gory, low-budget, high-concept gold. Though not the fest’s best offering—that honor goes to Tomas Alfredson’s brilliant Let The Right One In—Irish-American writer/director Glenn McQuaid’s joyously ghoulish I Sell The Dead (which had its North American premiere there) was perhaps the fan favorite—a deliberately wonky throwback to Aip’s modestly produced yet opulent Roger Corman/Edgar Allen Poe pictures of the 1960s, with more than a dash of broad, Monty Python-esque absurdity.
Expanded from The Resurrection Apprentice, a classy—and considerably more somber—Hammeresque short McQuaid made in 2005 (and which I enjoyed very much), I Sell The Dead adopts a flashback framework, beginning at the end with notorious Victorian-era graverobber Willie...

Somewhere in England in the 19th Century body snatchers Arthur Blake [Dominic Monaghan] and Willie Grimes [Larry Fessenden] have robbed their last grave. Willie has already had his date with destiny with the chopping block and with just a few hours before Arthur follows he recounts his life story to Father Duffy [Ron Pearlman]. As Arthur talks about his early upbringing, developing the skills of the trade he also accounts for some truly bizarre occurrences and we learn that not all corpses are equal. I Sell The Dead presents a unique point of view of a life of crime in 19th century England. It is not very often that you see a grave robbing film that also has zombies, aliens and vampires in it. This horror comedy from director/writer/editor Glenn McQuaid gives us just that.

The setting was perfect: it was just the second theatre showing ever of I Sell The Dead, it was the North American premiere, it was the final film of the best-ever third edition of the Toronto After Dark Film Fest, and in attendance were director/writer Glenn McQuaid, producer/actor Larry Fessenden, actor Angus Scrimm, actor Brenda Cooney, and producer Peter Phok. You could feel the buzz. And hardly miss Mr. Scrimm’s ultra-funky white glasses.
The movie? High-caliber comedy-horror, done vignette style, as Irish grave robber Arthur Blake (adroitly played by Dominic Monaghan) tells a series of macabre yet wacky tales to a really big priest, Father Duffy (delightfully played by Quiet Earth fave, Ron Perlman) as he awaits his beheading in five hours.
Arthur is the erstwhile partner of the recently-beheaded,...

We love Ron Perlman in just about anything (which is good, as he's in nearly everything), and since a movie about corpse thieves may not have strong commercial prospects, here's a bit of promo for I Sell The Dead (also starring Dominic Monaghan of Lotr and "Lost", and horror legend Angus Scrimm). The synopsis: "19th Century justice has finally caught up with grave robbers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes. With the specter of guillotine looming over him, young Blake does what...

We love Larry Fessenden. We love Ron Perlmen. We love Angus Scrimm. And you know what? We even love little Dominic Monaghan which is why we've been following this flick since day one. Joblo's grumpy little crousin Arrow in the Head tracked down the first poster for I Sell the Dead and for those of you who love poster art, you can find a slightly bigger version of it after the jump.
"19th Century justice has finally caught up with grave robbers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes. With the specter of guillotine looming over him, young Blake does what many do when they prepare to meet their maker, he confesses his sins to a priest. Arthur recounts for Father Duffy his fifteen years as a young boy stealing trinkets from corpses to their rise as hunters and traders of those that just won't accept their place in the ground. The...

I've been watching this website for months now, and who gets first diggs? Fangoria. Yup, they got the exclusive trailer. This is produced by one of my personal favorites Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter) who also stars along with Angus Scrimm (Phantasm), Dominic Monaghan (LOST), and Ron Perlman (Uh like everything). "19th Century justice has finally caught up with grave robbers Arthur Blake and Willie Grimes. With the specter of guillotine looming over him, young Blake does what many do when they prepare to meet their maker, he confesses his sins to a priest. The colorful and exciting history of Grimes and Blake is one filled with peculiar horror, and vicious professional competition that ends where it begins -- the grave!
