No lie: Peacock is ordering a second season of Based on a True Story.
The NBCUniversal-owned streamer has picked up the series, a comedic thriller from UCP and starring Kaley Cuoco (who also executive produces) and Chris Messina. The first season debuted in June and earned mostly favorable reviews; detailed viewing data is, per usual with streamers, not public, but the series did land in Nielsen’s top 10 rankings for the week of its premiere.
Based on a True Story is, in fact, based on (or at least partly inspired by) a true story, while also satirizing true crime tropes. The series stars Cuoco and Messina as Ava and Nathan, a down-on-their-luck couple who cross paths with an infamous serial killer in Los Angeles. Ava, a true crime obsessive, hits on the idea of making a podcast with the killer as a way out of their rut.
The cast also includes Tom Bateman,...

For James Kane, the struggle of trying to make a living as an actor was the reason why he became a therapist.
As a member of SAG-AFTRA for over 15 years, Kane knew what it was like to never know whether or not he’d get enough work for the year to qualify for the guild’s health plan. Living through the 2007 WGA strike allowed him to witness firsthand the anxiety of entertainment workers who don’t know when they’re going to have jobs again.
“I made enough to qualify every once in a while, but it was always a roll of the dice,” Kane said. “That experience made me sensitive to the needs of actors and entertainment workers whose work is now being maligned. I decided to go into...

Members of the Writers Guild of America staged a picket Wednesday outside of the rehearsal space used by competitors on “Dancing With the Stars,” as ABC is moving forward with the premiere of the reality competition’s 32nd season next week.
Approximately 20-25 guild members were counted by TheWrap at 8:45 a.m. around the sidewalk and back alley entrances to the rehearsal space, with shifts planned into the afternoon. Picket line coordinators did not divulge details on their plans for future pickets but said they are approaching the “DWTS” picket lines with a similar strategy to the grassroots picket lines that were formed in the early months of the strike to shut down productions that tried to continue shooting without writers present.

Sleepy Hollow, Season 2, Episode 13, “Pittura Infamante”

Directed by John Leonetti
Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
Last weekend during the Fox executive session at the Television Critics Association press tour, Fox chairman and CEO Dana Waldron talked at length about their plans for the spring, which included thoughts on the direction of Sleepy Hollow. Waldron held off on announcing a season three renewal (even after handing them out to Empire, Gotham, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine), but said they were “hopeful” and there were ongoing conversations with the creative team. Citing a “high level of difficulty” in balancing the show’s characterization and mythology, she said that the show was “a little overly serialized” and promised that there would be a shift to “something that feels a bit more episodic in nature… it’s all about calibrating the show, not making dramatic changes.”

Sleepy Hollow, Season 2, Episode 3, “Root Of All Evil”
Written by Melissa Blake and Donald Todd
Directed by Jeffrey Hunt
Airs Mondays at 9pm (Et) on Fox
It’s fairly obvious that to the Sleepy Hollow writers, the entire American Revolution is a bucket of plot hooks, which is why it’s surprising it’s taken them a season and change to find a reason to use Benedict Arnold. One of the war’s most notorious figures—as Fat Tony’s henchmen would say, the same Benedict Arnold who plotted to surrender West Point to the hated British—he’s a persona that even someone with a surface knowledge of American history could identify. And given Sleepy Hollow’s keen interest in the ideas of loyalty and betrayal, he’s a prime candidate to fit into the show’s narrative and prompt questions about whose side someone is on.

Airs Mondays at 9 Pm Est on Fox

After a winter hiatus, Sleepy Hollow returns with one of its most complete episodes of its first season. “Vessel” takes all of the elements which make Sleepy Hollow a good show and blends them almost perfectly. From superficial elements like Ichabod’s (Tom Mison) reactions to modern clothes and wacky, alternate takes on early American history to more serious things like fleshing out Frank’s (Orlando Jones) relationship with his family and Moloch’s larger plot. This episode also features some scenes of visceral horror and a plot that kicks into gear ten minutes into the episode and doesn’t hit the brakes until the denouement. Goffman and McMillan weld this episode’s story to Sleepy Hollow‘s overall arc while Melissa Blake...

Sleepy Hollow, Season 1, Episode 5: “John Doe″
Written by Melissa Blake
Directed by Ernest Dickerson
Airs Mondays at 9:00 Pm Et on Fox
In another wacky episode of Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) and Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) meet a young boy, who runs through the woods and faints. He is wearing antiquated clothes, only speaks Middle English, and is covered in black veins. “John Doe” has the most detective work of any Sleepy Hollow episode and does an excellent job developing Abbie’s character as she is faced with even more bizarre events. Ernest Dickerson (The Walking Dead, The Wire) also turns in the best camera work since “Pilot”. However, the scenes involving Crane’s wife Katrina (Katia Winter) fall flat and make Sleepy Hollow‘s overarching plot even more confusing. She is reduced to a one-note exposition provider, and even her exposition makes almost no sense. However,...
