Wow! Fritz Lang's second western is a marvel -- a combo of matinee innocence and that old Germanic edict that character equals fate. It has a master's sense of color and design. Robert Young is an odd fit but Randolph Scott is nothing less than terrific. You'd think Lang was born on the Pecos. Invaders from Mars (1986)
Directed by: Tobe Hooper
Written by: Richard Blake, Don Jakoby, and Dan O’Bannon
Cast: Hunter Carson (David Gardner), Karen Black (Linda Magnusson), Timothy Bottoms (George Gardner), Laraine Newman (Ellen Gardner), James Karen (Gen. Climet Wilson), Bud Cort (Mark Weinstein)
The best that I can tell, nostalgia runs on a thirty year cycle. I can speculate that what everybody watches as children, shapes them into adults with a deep seated desire to emulate it or watch it being emulated. A select few make it to a position where they can actually interject that nostalgia into the contemporary mainstream, and satisfy both the fans of the original material, but also put such a spit shine on the old premise that even the youngsters dig it, and have no idea that it’s based on something way older than they are. In the 1980’s we...

As the young boy kneels over his mother and father’s fallen bodies, he listens intently to the patriarch’s final words, “Bruce, itʼs okay. Donʼt be afraid.” We know in this instance that the young Bruce Wayne would never be the same.
In 2005, Christopher Nolan released the first of what would become The Dark Knight Trilogy – Batman Begins. The feature was groundbreaking in its portrayal of the comic book super hero, as Nolan had subverted the image of Batman as a camp, pantomime-type protagonist that had featured in the previous two films, Joel Schumacherʼs 1995 film Batman Forever and the disastrous 1997 film Batman & Robin.
The image of Batman had been one of variety in the near-seventy years since the character first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939; at the time, he was born out of the popularity of fellow DC superhero Superman.
Different interpretations on screen had suited a changing society; from the melodramatic,...

Exclusive: Entertainment Universe closed a deal with Film Star Partners II for P&A funds and has set a 25-city September 6 release for Snake & Mongoo$e, a drama about the rivalry and friendship between Don “The Snake” Prudhomme (Jesse Williams) and Tom “The Mongoo$e” McEwen (Richard Blake) in the world of drag racing. Their unusual rivalry relationship drew a major sponsorship by Mattel’s Hot Wheels division. Wayne Holloway directed and CAA is shopping the film to distributors, which should be easier with the P&A accounted for. The release comes just after the National Hot Rod Association’s U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis on Labor Day weekend. Robin Broidy, and Stephen Nemeth produce. Here’s a trailer for the film.

The Cool Ones (1967). Directed by Gene Nelson. Written by Nelson, Joyce Geller, Robert Kaufman.
Nothing ages more quickly and more embarrassingly than a movie or TV show which had worked so hard to be cool in its time. You disagree? Feathered hair, big lapels. Oh, God – mullets! You gonna honestly tell me that stuff still works for you as anything but a laugh-getter?
Lead times for some movies are so long, some crazes burn out between the pitch meeting and opening weekend. Roller disco was dying (if not dead) by the time Roller Boogie (1979) and Xanudu (1980) hit theaters, and did anybody still care about The Village People when Can’t Stop the Music (1980) had movie-goers wishing they could?
The only thing even more embarrassing is a movie that’s lethally uncool even before the first frame of film runs through the camera, not because it’s late to the party,...

There’s been a whole glut of toy-based films these past few years — you may know them simply because they refuse to go away — so it’s about time the men behind the products got a little spotlight. That’s just what’s happening with Snake & Mongoose, which, according to Variety, has grabbed Noah Wyle to play Arthur Spear, a ’70s Mattel executive responsible for introducing commercial advertising in the world of car racing.
The film itself — written by Alan Paradise & Wayne Holloway, and directed by the latter — also focuses on Don “The Snake” Prudhomme (Jesse Williams) and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen (Richard Blake), two racers who were given a big boost when Spear decided to place the Hot Wheels logo on the side of their cars, making the toy “the first non-automotive sponsor in a racing sport.” Along with the obvious financial benefit to be gained from the partnership,...
