There is nothing extraordinary about Norma. A sweet-natured and caring elderly lady, she bears a crown of hair curlers on her head and the weight of decades of marriage on her shoulders. But today is Norma’s birthday and she has finally had enough of her daughter’s constant complaints and her husband’s barely concealed resentment. Written and directed by Emily Munster during lockdown No.1, Norma is a character study of a woman trapped in her house and in the memories of her long-lost youth, giving the nine-minute darkly funny short huge emotional heft and crowd appeal. Grounded by a winning central performance by Susie Blake, the film showcases the importance of dreaming and seeking happiness at every stage in life, without ever slipping into saccharine or self-pitying waters. We are celebrating the online premiere of Norma with cake and plenty of insights from Munster – from the reasons behind...

Dolls will never go out of fashion as a child’s toy, but in horror literature, they reached their peak somewhere in the 1980s. There was no quicker way to convey unease by illustrating a creepy doll on a book cover, though on many occasions a doll wasn’t even a crucial part of the story. These toys were typically put on display as a visual shortcut for childhood terror and the loss of innocence. The two books in this edition of Buried in a Book, however, are not misleading their readers; they both deliver on their promise of doll horror.
Dell’s Twilight: Where Darkness Begins and Bantam’s Dark Forces were published around the same time. Despite each series having supernatural leanings, there was little overlap in content. One exception, albeit a meager one, is Twilight’s The Haunted Dollhouse (1984) and Dark Force’s The Doll (1983). Both books...

'Coronation Street' bosses have planned a ''heartbreaking'' exit for Anne Kirkbride's character Deirdre Barlow. The actress died in January, aged 60, after losing her battle with cancer and it's been revealed her character's 42-year association with the soap will conclude when Ken Barlow - played by Bill Roache - throws a surprise party for her, only to be told by Bev Unwin - played by Susie Blake - that Deirdre suffered a suspected brain aneurysm and died ''peacefully'' in her garden. A show source said: ''Filming this was emotional for everyone involved. Tracy (Barlow) just breaks down and howls as Steve (McDonald)...

Bev Unwin is to return to 'Coronation Street' for Deirdre Barlow's funeral. Susie Blake, who played Rovers Return barmaid Bev from 2003 to 2006, is set to reprise her role later this year in order to pay tribute to her pal, the late Anne Kirkbride. A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: ''It's going to be emotional. ''Some of Deirdre's closest friends and her family will be there to pay their respects.'' Susie was close friends with Anne, who played Deirdre in the ITV soap for over 40 years, before she tragically lost her battle with cancer earlier this year. And the 65-year-old actress...

You, Me & Them, Series 1
Written and created by Steve Turner

A sitcom has two primary jobs in terms of becoming a success: to build a world viewers will want to continue spending time in, and to make them laugh. The former is perhaps the more daunting task, but both are nebulous, hard to measure, and difficult to figure out in advance. British television is often vaunted as superior to its American counterpart, but if American TV has one advantage, it is that the increased episode orders on network television give American sitcoms time to find themselves in their first season. You, Me & Them, the new sitcom from writer/creator Steve Turner, does a decent job at building out a world and cast of characters worth spending time with, but in its six-episode first season, it all too often forgets to be funny.

The Grumpy Old Women really rocked Lady Gaga’s Poker Face on tonight’s Let’s Dance For Sport Relief and the half naked backing dancers certainly didn’t hurt the routine.
Taking part was Lesley Joseph, Susie Blake, Linda Robson and Jenny Eclair and the post-menopausal bunch were so well disguised, that we couldn’t even identify the one in the green outfit who was showing way too much crotch! Perversely, we found ourselves trying to work out which granny was the hottest. We have decided on the one in blue.
Jack Dee made us laugh when he claimed that the old dolls “made hip replacements sexy again”.
