- In 2000, he scored a clean sweep by winning both Tony Awards as Best Director (Play) for Michael Frayn's "Copenhagen" and Best Director (Musical) for a revival of "Kiss Me, Kate." He has also been Tony-nominated five other times: as Best Director (Dramatic), in 1968 for "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg;" as Best Director (Play), in 1984 for "Noises Off;" and in 1990 for "Lettice and Lovage;" and as Best Director (Musical), in 1990 for "City of Angels;" and in 1997 for "The Life." He is the only directed to have been twice nominated in both directing caregories in the same year (1990 and 2000).

- In 2000, Michael Blakemore won the Tony Award for "Copenhagen"(Director of a Play), and "Kiss Me, Kate"(Director of a Musical). He is the only director to accomplish this feat.
