With CBS’ daytime talk show The Talk doing well in the ratings, the network executive who oversees it, Angelica McDaniel, is getting a promotion. McDaniel has been upped to Svp, Daytime, CBS Entertainment, a position that had been vacant for the past year, since Barbara Bloom left in January 2011 after 8 years. In he new role, McDaniel will oversee CBS’ daytime lineup, including dramas The Young And The Restless and Bold And The Beautiful, game shows The Price Is Right and Let’s Make A Deal as well as The Talk, reporting to CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler. It has been a fast rise for McDaniel, who joined CBS in August 2010. She most recently served as VP, Current Daytime Programs, overseeing The Talk, and will continue to shepherd the day-to-day creative affairs for the talk show. “Angelica has made invaluable contributions to the launch and success of The Talk,” Tassler said.

She today informed her staff about her departure when her contract expires at the end of the month after 8 years with the network. (Statements below.) Immediately, there was Internet chatter that Barbara Bloom had clashed with Julie Chen, wife of Les Moonves and a host of the new daytime The Talk show, over Bloom's supposed attempt to "micromanage" it. But I can tell you that's not true. "Bloom had never done a talk show before and was totally in over her head. She didn't have the skill set," my source says about the exec who specialized in soap operas at ABC and CBS, one of which CBS cancelled in 2009 and the other in 2010. "Julie Chen did not cause this firing. Julie is just not that person. I'd love to tell you tales about how she manipulates Les and whatever, but she just doesn’t." I hear that, with CBS' soaps...

More Days Exits: Shelley Hennig & Jay Kenneth Johnson
Shelley Hennig (Stephanie) and Jay Kenneth Johnson (Philip) have both decided to leave the show. "It just feels right," says Hennig of why she's taking off after four years. "I have been preparing for this for awhile, so I have said my mental good-byes. I will miss the faces I see here every day, but everybody has been really encouraging and has embraced my decision.... I feel like I'm going out with a bang after last week's air shows and I feel great about it creatively and I am thankful to the writers for giving me that. I am thankful for this role that Days has given me and will miss playing this character. I am forever thankful for the fans and this wonderful gift that was given to me. It's been a lot of fun to play and I wouldn't change anything.

Look out, Whoopi, Joy, Sherri and Elisabeth. CBS is coming for you!
With As the World Turns going off the air in September, that network has announced it will replace the long-running soap opera with a talk show modeled after The View.
The series will feature Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini, and Marissa Jaret Winokur - all quasi celebrities and all mothers with young children.
“Daytime is an evolving daypart with more variety now among soap operas, game and talk shows,” said Barbara Bloom, CBS Senior Vice President of Daytime. “We were looking for a new format that would speak to the core audience but also have the topical and entertainment value to go even broader. The replacement of "As the World Turns" has been found and CBS plants a talk show similar to "The View" on the time slot. The five co-hosts are Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Holly Robinson Peete, Leah Remini, and Marissa Jaret Winokur who are all mothers to either infant or adults. Gilbert in particular is also the producer.
The recruitment of these five hosts has something to do with the format because they will discuss current events like "The View" but from a motherhood point of view. But like "The View", there will also be interviews with big names in the entertainment world as well as newsmakers.

Remember when soaps used to rule daytime and the minds of housewives, men sick from work or unemployed, and teens who had nothing else to watch on a sick day?
Well those times are about to meet their maker, because soaps are dropping like flies (and no they will not return two or three years later as an amnesiac).
CBS released a statement this morning that detailed the cancellation of As The World Turns, which will be ending its run in September 2010. Long-running CBS daytime serial "As the World Turns," which premiered on April 2, 1956, has amassed 58 Daytime Emmys and launched the careers of such actors as Julianne Moore and Dana Delany, will conclude its more than five-decade run in September.
It has become the latest daytime soap to get the ax as daytime viewership is dwindling, forcing the networks to look for cheaper alternatives.
Top-rated from 1959-71, "As the World Turns" switched to color in 1967 and expanded to one hour in 1975. It is the longest-running daytime drama airing on TV following the cancellation of CBS' "Guiding Light."

In terms of Nielsen-topping ratings longevity, Fox's "American Idol" has nothing on CBS' "The Young & the Restless."
While the industry continues to marvel at the ability of "Idol" to dominant primetime in its seventh season, CBS' veteran soap just won its 1,000th consecutive week in the daytime ratings.
Put another way: "Young" has won every single week since 1988, when primetime included "Growing Pains", "Moonlighting" and "Alf". And "Young" already was 16 years old when its streak started.
"Reaching the milestones of 1,000 weeks at No. 1 and 35 years on the air simultaneously is unheard of in this industry, it is a testament to the work of an extraordinary team of storytellers both in front of and behind the cameras," said Barbara Bloom, senior vp daytime programs at CBS.
The "Young" record is all the more impressive considering the ratings erosion suffered by the daytime soap genre. For the week ending Feb. 29, "Young" earned a 4.2 household rating (5.8 million viewers), which is more than some current primetime shows.

CBS has greenlighted a second season of the original Web series "InTurn".
During "InTurn 2", nine young acting hopefuls will get another chance to land a 13-week role on CBS' "As the World Turns" after competing in a series of online challenges.
"We felt this was a terrific companion narrative to the show," said Barbara Bloom, senior vp daytime at CBS Entertainment. "It was fun added engagement, and it also boosted our ratings on-air."
Slated for launch in the summer, this season will again document the challenges of participants as they undergo screen tests, cold readings and other acting challenges while residing under the same roof. A new episode of "InTurn 2" will debut on CBS.com twice a week for eight weeks.
After six of the contestants are voted off by the judges -- with actors from the on-air daytime drama serving as judges -- viewers will determine the winner through an online vote.
The first season of the Web-based reality show, which debuted in the summer, wound up becoming the most-streamed program of those specifically created for CBS' broadband channel Innertube.
