It features the final recording of Jeff Beck along with contributions by Bruce Springsteen, David Gilmour, Slash, Ronnie Wood, Joan Jett, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, and Sting.
The song came out a week ago, but it was difficult to discern who was playing what part throughout the ten-minute song.

Mark Knopfler has teamed up with a host of fellow guitar legends to record a version of his song “Going Home (Theme from Local Hero)” to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America.
The Dire Straits frontman tapped Eric Clapton, Slash (Guns N’ Roses), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Brian May (Queen), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Pete Townshend (The Who), Alex Lifeson (Rush), Bruce Springsteen, Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Joan Jett, and many more, forming what he has dubbed “Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes.” Notably, the star-studded version opens with the final recorded guitar track by the late Jeff Beck.
Knopfler’s longtime collaborator Guy Fletcher handled the production of the track, which might be the greatest assemblage of guitar talent to co-exist on a single song. The Sgt. Pepper‘s-style artwork was created by Sir Peter Blake.

The upcoming LP marks Black Country Communion’s first album in seven years, following 2017’s Bcciv. It was produced by Kevin Shirley, who has helmed all five of the the band’s albums.
Shirley stated, “For a band that started out as a collection of the best practitioners of their instruments, they very quickly found a unique sound. This time around, it has more purpose, the riffs are tougher, and there are hooks! Yes, hooks! It’s the most cohesive record, full of soul and grit, and I think this is the one that’s going to be the benchmark for Black Country Communion.”

Dave Grohl has unleashed the only live performance of his epic 23-minute, instrumental “Play,” which extends the song to a whopping 36 minutes.
Recorded during Warren Haynes’ 30th Annual Christmas Jam in 2018, the live version expands the breadth of the instrumental as Grohl is accompanied by Greg Kurstin on keyboards, Chris Chaney on bass, Drew Hester on percussion, and guitarists Jason Falkner, Alain Johannes, and Barrett Jones. However, it’s Asheville-based busker Abby the Spoon Lady who really steals the show. Watch the performance below.
“Play” was originally composed and performed entirely with Grohl on every instrument. The process of its recording was captured in a two-part documentary of the same name, released in 2018.
The track will appear on The Benefit Concert Volume 20, a collection of performances recorded on December 7th and 8th, 2018 in Asheville, North Carolina. Other featured artists include Eric Church, Joe Bonamassa, Gov’t Mule, Mike Gordon, Marco Benevento,...

Taylor Swift’s least convincing lyric to date remains “I make the rules up as I go/And that’s what they don’t know,” from 1989’s “Shake It Off.” Now, four albums into her Taylor’s Version re-recordings, she has the good sense to sing that line with a hint of a smirk.
As with each of the previous Taylor’s Version releases, 1989 invites a degree of studiousness, of finding those slight changes in inflection and phrasing that play into both Swift’s fans’ devotion to the most minute details of her work and critics’ need to assess her output in a post-poptimist discourse. To that end, 1989 is perhaps the least noteworthy of her re-recordings so far.
Ultimately, that’s partly because the original 1989 has a lower ceiling for improvement than Swift’s first four albums. It was the first of her albums that captured truly great artistry without qualification or caveat.

Before Jimmy Page laid down some of the best guitar solos in classic rock, he had to learn how to play guitar just like any other musician. He had several teachers along the way, including jazz guitar legend John McLaughlin, who taught Page “a hell of a lot” years before he formed Led Zeppelin.
Jimmy Page ‘learned a hell of a lot’ from jazz guitar maestro John McLaughlin
Several teachers helped make Page the ace guitarist he was in Led Zeppelin.
The homeowner who abandoned the first guitar Page played as a child helped inspire his dream. So did the choirmaster who let young James Patrick Page tune his instrument using the church organ. Or the adult bandleaders who added the teenage guitarist to the Red E. Lewis & the Red Caps’ lineup (where he played under the name Nelson Storm). Jimmy Page won over millions of fans with his guitar playing in Led Zeppelin. The incredible riffs, great guitar solos, and stylistic diversity helped the band’s music stand the test of time. A knock on Page was that his playing was too sloppy to be considered great. For anyone making that claim, The Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson has some choice words.

It seems like an absurd classic rock take, but some music fans believe Page’s playing in Led Zeppelin was too sloppy to be considered great. They seem to ignore the passion and emotion behind the playing and judge him only on technical skill.

That moldy-peaches cliché “they don’t make ‘em like they used to” has rarely applied to anyone as much as Buddy Guy. As his former protégé Joe Bonamassa says in The Torch, a new doc about Guy, the now-85-year-old blues guitarist and singer is “the last man standing.” He really is: Guy is one of the few still-breathing blues veterans who can boast that he played behind Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, and wowed Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones when they were all twentysomething Brits learning the genre.

For as long as there have been guitars, there have been guitar lessons. There’s something uniquely soulful about a master teacher passing down lessons to an eager novice. Those first chords create an inextricable bond between student and instrument, and instill a lifelong connection to how music is made, shaped, refined, and mastered.
Covid-19 shattered that traditionally intimate process. Instead of sitting in a room strumming along with a teacher who could help you find the right fret and pluck the right string, many students were forced to take their lessons online.

Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford stunned a lot of fans late last week when he told Joe Bonamassa’s podcast Live From Nerdville that he didn’t know if the group would ever play again. “I have my doubts about Aerosmith ever really performing again at this stage, because age is becoming a real factor,” he said. “And it is what it is.”
The band has an extensive European tour on the books for summer 2022, but Whitford is quite skeptical that it’s going to go forward. “It’s a pipe dream right now,...

Actors’ Equity is warning members that New York City’s just-launched “Open Culture” program of outdoor performances on city streets does not meet the union’s minimum standards for wages or its Covid-19 safety protocols.
“If you are approached to work on a New York City ‘Open Culture’ project, please contact your business representative immediately before accepting,” writes Equity executive director Mary McColl in a letter being sent to members today.
Equity indicated that it will “continue to push New York City” to make changes to Open Culture regarding pay and safety issues.
The city’s Open Culture website indicates that arts organizations eligible for inclusion in the program include theaters, music venues, comedy clubs and others. Filming or recording of the events is permitted without a film permit.

Rock & roll great Dion has released a new holiday song, “Hello Christmas,” featuring Amy Grant.
“Hello Christmas” is a cheery acoustic number bolstered by all the classic sonic trappings of the season, from the jangle of sleigh bells shoring up the percussion to big booming bells ringing across the song. For all its warmth, though, “Hello Christmas” seems to acknowledge the particular balm the holidays may serve in 2020, with Dion singing and Grant providing harmony, “You bring more than you’ll ever know/Peace and love to young and old...

Alice Cooper has recorded a gritty cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Rock & Roll” for his upcoming LP, Detroit Stories. The record comes out on February 26th.
The rendition is a straight-ahead rocker, as Cooper adds a little of his own growl to his take on Reed’s vocals. He changes some of the lyrics — the rock & roll radio source is a “Detroit station” instead of one from New York — but mostly he sticks to the song’s raw foundation. In addition to Cooper, the recording features some other notable...

“If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it ‘Chuck Berry,’” John Lennon proclaimed on The Mike Douglas Show in 1972. “In the 1950s, a whole generation worshipped his music, and when you see him today, past and present all come together, and the message is Hail, Hail Rock and Roll.’” The two idols then kicked off into Berry’s song “Memphis, Tennessee.” Chuck Berry: The Original King Of Rock ‘N’ Roll is the first-ever feature-length documentary on the duck-walking electric guitarist and songwriter. It’s been playing, like any good rock and roll film, at special drive-in events across the country. The film will be available on VOD platforms and on Blu-ray on November 27.

Folks who were clinging to hope of seeing a concert at the Greek Theatre this summer are succumbing to reality. The beloved outdoor amphitheater in Los Angeles has pulled the plug on its 2020 season as the coronavirus pandemic plays out.
It’s the first time in the Greek’s 90-year history that it has scrapped a season.

The Doors’ Robby Krieger led a sultry rendition of “Back Door Man,” the blues standard that appeared on the band’s debut album, with vocalist-guitarist Orianthi and Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro at a guitar all-stars gig. As she sings, she alternates between declaring, “You’re my backdoor man” and “I’m your backdoor man,” claiming the sexuality that Howlin’ Wolf and Jim Morrison put into the song for herself. Krieger plays a slippery, melodic solo before passing it over to Navarro for a flashier, metal-tinged blues lead and...

Tom Petty has left a massive hole in the music industry, and will be missed by both musicians and fans around the world.
Earlier this year, the 66-year-old music legend was honored as the 2017 MusiCares Person Of The Year in recognition of his significant creative accomplishments, his career-long interest in defending artists’ rights, and the charitable work he has undertaken throughout his career, which has notably focused on the homeless population in Los Angeles. Widely recognized by a younger generation of musicians as an example of what an engaged artist can accomplish in his field and beyond, Petty has come to represent the lasting possibilities of rock and roll.
The event raised a record $8.5 millon for MusiCares’ programs and services.
The sad news of Petty’s death comes only days after Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers wrapped their successful 40th-anniversary tour with shows at venues such as the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
