This year welcomes the fourth part of the Planet of the Apes franchise- Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Though only speculation, it seems like the box office won’t be so fond of the apes. Inspired by the literary work of French author Pierre François Marie Louis Boulle, the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise is all set to release its fourth movie.
Directed by Wes Ball, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes features Owen Teague as the lead actor alongside Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. Distributed by 20th Century Studios, the film’s trailer has already crossed 13 million views. However, despite the franchise’s fame, the movie might not make a great deal at the box office.

Planet of the Apes is one of the most successful and durable science fiction franchises in Hollywood history. Starting in 1968 with the original film, the Apes series has generated more than $2.1 billion in box office grosses over the course of just nine movies, with a highly-anticipated 10th entry, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, due for release this May. The property has also spawned both a live-action and animated TV series, books, comics, video games, and toys – the latter produced in the wake of the first film’s success and arguably the template for future movie merchandising campaigns.
And yet, as we’ve seen over and over again with blockbuster pop culture milestones like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and numerous others, Hollywood at the beginning was loathe to touch the property. After publicist-turned-producer Arthur P. Jacobs secured the rights to the novel upon which the original film was based,...

You can’t keep a good ape down.
While 2017’s “War of the Planet of the Apes” was a fitting conclusion to the latest trilogy in the (second) rebooted “Planet of the Apes” franchise, more monkey business is headed our way. The first full trailer for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” dropped during the Super Bowl on Sunday, and showed that the battle on the gridiron was no match for a big Hollywood spectacle.
The new film, out on May 10, is directed by Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner”) and stars motion-capture ape renderings performed by Owen Teague (Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s son in “You Hurt My Feelings”), Kevin Durand, and William H. Macy. The part of the doe-eyed human female (wearing the requisite rags) is played by “The Witcher” star Freya Allan.

For most of us, the Planet of the Apes movies have always been around. Spanning five decades and ten movies – and counting – it’s hard to imagine a world without that race of hyper-intelligent monkeys and their everlasting war against man. We take this extended universe for granted, but it wasn’t always this way. It’s probably not hard to believe that at one time, the concept of a world populated by talking apes wasn’t thought of as a box office draw, and if it hadn’t been for the determination of a handful of true believers in the material, we may never have gotten one movie, let alone an entire franchise. So let’s go back in time a bit to a world without Dr. Zaius and the gang and find out Wtf Happened to Planet of the Apes?

That tentpole blood bath that was to occur over Memorial Day weekend between 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Warner Bros/Village Roadshow’s Furiosa is no longer: The former Apes reboot is now shifting two weeks earlier to May 10.
On its new date, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be up against such wide studio releases as Focus Features’ Amy Winehouse biopic, Back to Black, Sony’s Horrorscope, and an untitled movie from Angel Studios. Still, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be the alpha male among that counterprogramming.
Also in the mix on Memorial Day weekend, which is May 24-27, is Sony’s Garfield movie.
By going earlier, Disney gets Imax screens for two weeks before Furiosa. It’s also the first time a Planet of the Apes movie will have played in Imax.

One can't say much to defend the clunky script or the bad casting decisions for Tim Burton's 2001 film adaptation of Pierre Boulle's "Planet of the Apes." Not only did Burton's film alter the story of the original novel into something far less poignant, but Mark Wahlberg didn't project the "square-jawed space hero" archetype that his character was clearly written as. Estella Warren and Kris Kristofferson also didn't fare well as put-upon wilderness dwellers, coming across as dainty weekend warriors who had never been camping before.
Where Burton's film excels, however, is the ape design. The makeup effects by Rick Baker are some of the best in cinema history, looking eerily natural on the faces of previously recognizable actors. Additionally, the ape cast went through extensive movement training and their chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan body movements are impressive and convincing.
The ape cast also did its job with aplomb.

The conflict between man and simian is renewed in the first trailer for 20th Century Studios’ Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Set for theatrical release on May 24, 2024, Wes Ball’s film takes place many years after the end of Matt Reeves’ 2017 feature, War for the Planet of the Apes, which is the most recent movie in the enduring franchise. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Peter Macon, Eka Darville, Kevin Durand, William H. Macy and Dichen Lachman.
After the 2017 film showed Caesar leading his kind to an oasis, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes picks up with numerous ape societies continuing to thrive, while humans have been reduced to a nearly feral existence. As one ape ruler enslaves others amid his quest for human technology, a different ape seeks freedom and hopes to work with a young human woman to achieve that goal.

When I was a kid, no movie ending scared me more than "Planet of the Apes." Granted, I was exposed to Tim Burton's poorly received update on the film before I ever saw the stunning ending of Franklin J. Schaffner's original, but the effect was the same both times: total shock, awe, and primal fear over the idea that our world may one day become wholly unrecognizable.
I was far from alone. A young Roger Ebert, just one year into his career as a critic, praised the film for its "thoroughly satisfactory surprise ending," while Pauline Kael commended the movie's ability to pull off its revelations, noting that its "construction is really extraordinary." The final scene of the film, in which an abstract monument in the sand is revealed to be none other than the Statue of Liberty, is both thrilling and existentially horrifying. Who could have ever...

The original "Planet of the Apes" remains one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. This is a movie with incredible makeup effects that hold up to this day, an air-tight script with poignant social commentary co-written by "The Twilight Zone" creator Rod Serling, and a stellar performance by Roddy McDowall.
Of course, the film is arguably best remembered for having one of the greatest and most memorable twist endings in all of cinema, which Tim Burton utterly failed to replicate. The ending of "Planet of the Apes" has been referenced and parodied to death for decades — though, if you somehow have remained unsullied until now, we will not ruin it. It is also an ending that is rather hard to top, though that didn't stop Twentieth Century Fox from trying.

Sometimes we hear negative stories about famous actors on set. Egos get in the way of common courtesy, political leanings can color conversations, and working conditions can bring out the worst in people. Here's an actually lovely one instead. Prosthetic makeup is a tricky thing, and I say this as someone who has worn them in productions and been a makeup artist who applied them. They are not comfortable and can be very hot, itchy, and claustrophobic. Effects makeup has come a long way since the late 1960s when "Planet of the Apes" was shooting, and even now, it's not easy to wear. Back then, it must have been awful.
Add in the fact that, when shooting some of the scenes in the classic sci-fi film, the cast was out in the desert in 100-degree heat. The people playing the apes had major prosthetics on their faces, extra hair on their arms,...

1957's "The Bridge on the River Kwai" marked one of the finest achievements in Hollywood history by presenting both a taut, suspenseful World War II story and a tale of psychological degradation under the oppressive weight of a P.O.W. camp. Director David Lean's masterful command of pace and tone is assisted by nuanced and engaging performances from Sir Alec Guinness, William Holden, and Sessue Hayakawa. And the screenplay, based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, is beautifully structured, building to an explosive climax that's almost secondary to the implosion that's been carefully developed across the whole movie.
The screenplay was credited to Boulle, and he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. While he wrote the source material, the screenplay actually came entirely from other writers, who were kept under wraps. Between Boulle, Lean, and producer Sam Spiegel, many people officially involved with the movie would take some credit for the work.

In the highly unlikely event that you become a major Hollywood player (if that even means anything anymore), keep this in mind: net points are for saps. Studio accounting is basically rigged to ensure that blockbusters almost never turn a significant profit. This is because lowly creatives like screenwriters and the authors who wrote the material on which the movie is based would have to get paid, which is anathema to executives.
If you want to get seriously wealthy in the film biz, get your agent to negotiate for gross points. Get that first-dollar windfall before exhibitors and what-have-you get their cut. That's funny money. And that gravy train got chugging down the track but good in 1957 when William Holden and his representation recognized his value to David Lean's big-screen adaptation of Pierre Boulle's World War II novel "The Bridge on the River Kwai."

The World War II film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" is considered a classic, and for good reason. The prisoner of war story is based on a novel, and was inspired by a true story. It also boasts a tremendous cast that includes William Holden and Sir Alec Guinness. In fact, it's the film that won Guinness — who would go on to gain worldwide fame as Obi-Wan Kenobi — the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.
The film itself took home seven Oscars in all, including Best Picture, and has become so revered that it was selected to be part of the National Film Registry at the United States Library of Congress. It was acclaimed by both critics and audiences alike upon its release and continues to be revered to this day.

"Kingdom of the Planet of The Apes" is the upcoming science fiction action feature from 20th Century, to be directed by Wes Ball as the first in a new 'Pota' film franchise, loosely adapting elements form the novel "Monkey Planet" (1963) by French author Pierre Boulle:
In the Boulle story: "...a rich couple sailing alone in space, 'Jinn' and 'Phyllis', rescue and translate a manuscript from a floating bottle. The manuscript was written by journalist 'Ulysse Mérou', who in the year 2500 was invited by wealthy 'Professor Antelle' to accompany him and his disciple, physician 'Arthur Levain', to 'Betelgeuse'.
