On Dec. 18, 1987, MGM unveiled Norman Jewison’s romantic comedy Moonstruck in theaters, where it would go on to gross $80 million. The film nabbed six Oscar nominations at the 60th Academy Awards, winning best actress for Cher’s performance, best supporting actress for Olympia Dukakis’ role and screenplay for John Patrick Shanley’s script. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Deck the halls and crack open the eggnog. The already impressive yuletide movie season has hit new heights with the arrival of Norman Jewison’s Moonstruck.
A romantic comedy that doesn’t skimp in either department, Jewison’s celebration of The Family, as captured by the pen of screenwriter John Patrick Shanley, expertly weaves the spell of a Capra or a Lubitsch. With its universal appeal, expect MGM to reap the lion’s share of box-office cheer.
Cher, in her most confident performance to date, is a delight as Loretta Castorini,...

A guy walking down the street is a common everyday sight. I even did it myself earlier today, traveling from my apartment to the cafe to write this article, but few of us regular blokes can make it as cool as our counterparts in the movies. Whether we're talking about the doomed death march of "The Wild Bunch," the gang strolling off their breakfast in slow-mo in "Reservoir Dogs," or Richard Roundtree prowling the streets in "Shaft," this simple act of locomotion, developed millions of years ago by our early ancestors, can become iconic when captured on film.
John Badham's disco relic "Saturday Night Fever" opens with one of the most famous struts in cinema history as Tony Manero (John Travolta), looking sharp as he swings a can of paint, checks out women, and orders a double slice of pizza swaggers through a gritty Brooklyn neighborhood to "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.

Criterion refreshes a bona fide classic with a new remaster and makes their release especially attractive with some well-chosen extras that give us first-person input from writer John Patrick Shanley and star Cher. The show isn’t technically a holiday movie but it plays really well at family gatherings. Heck, even Cher says ‘she can watch this movie’ which from her is a high compliment. The answer to ‘who needs to see this? is that a lot of people have been born since 1987.

Troubling fact: the great director Otto Preminger's worst film is not Skidoo. Three physical misfits form an alternative family as a defense against the world. It's a good idea for a movie, but the writer and director do just about everything wrong that a writer and director can do. How does one make a movie about a hot-button political topic that's divided the nation for sixty years? And if the facts of the case aren't fully known, how can one be sure that some news revelation won't reach back and make your well-meaning film play like a stack of lies? E. L. Doctorow and Sidney Lumet found a way. Daniel Olive Films Savant Blu-ray Review
