Coming off another year marked by uncertainty and conflict, ordinary, unlikely heroes take center stage in a slew of new shows. While crime especially the Nordic-inspired kind is not going anywhere, and there are quite a few spectacles waiting around the corner, including Mipcom world premiere “Concordia,” intimate stories about families and friends butting heads but ultimately trying to come together continue to dominate the market stage. There are also more portrayals of strong, complicated women who dare to dream big today or in the past. The following is a list of some of the buzziest titles at Mipcom.

Britain’s leading lady of the TV action thriller, Keeley Hawes, is back.
The star of “Bodyguard” returns in “Crossfire,” another nail-biting thriller for the BBC in which Hawes plays a holidaymaker whose sunbathing session on her hotel balcony becomes a nightmare when shots ring out across the complex, turning her world upside down.
The scenario will remind audiences of her turn as the U.K. home secretary alongside Richard Madden’s bodyguard in the eponymous BBC drama, which became a global hit when it was picked up by Netflix.
The setting for “Crossfire,” however, is a far cry from London’s Westminster, instead set at a luxury resort in the Canary Islands.
Produced by Fremantle’s Dancing Ledge Productions (“The Salisbury Poisonings”), the drama is the first original series from author Louise Doughty, who previously adapted her novel “Apple Tree Yard” for a hugely popular BBC limited series.

Emily in Paris exec Lilly Burns has predicted more U.S. and UK production companies will co-produce together as she unearths how Jax Media and UK indie Dancing Ledge Productions came together to bring Disney+’s Wedding Season to screen.
The genre-bending action comedy is the first UK Disney+ original to launch and rolls out on adult-skewing vertical Star and Hulu in the U.S. from September 8.
Described by Burns as “Four Weddings and a Funeral meets Die Hard” and starring Canadian-American Alita: Battle Angel star Rosa Salazar and Irishman Gavin Drea (Vikings: Valhalla), Wedding Season is a rare co-production between a U.S. producer, Jax, and Chris Carey’s Fremantle-backed UK indie Dancing Ledge, which he runs with Laurence Bowen.
Jax worked with French production services outfit First Step on Netflix smash Emily in Paris and Burns said deep-pocketed streamer shows are “elevated” by having producers from different countries behind them.

Fremantle has sold out most major territories worldwide on the Martin Freeman-led BBC One smash hit “The Responder,” consolidating the acclaimed crime drama’s contention, even at this early stage, to become one of Europe’s top series of 2022.
Banner deals take in France (Canal Plus), Italy (Disney Plus), Germany’s (Magenta TV). Spain (Movistar Plus) and Russia & Cis (Viasat), all leading pay/SVOD operators.
The sales come as Fremantle, thanks to “The Responder,” “Cross Fire,” “Suspect” and “This Sceptred Isle” looks set to see an unprecedented four U.K. premium dramas finishing production in 2022. Led by “Fellow Travelers,” its English-language sales lineup for 2023 looks equally bullish.
In all, in 2022 Fremantle’s U.K. drama output will more than double compared to the previous year, said Jens Richter, at Fremantle’s global sales arm, Fremantle International, which he oversees as CEO.
That, however, is part of larger global surge.

Malaysian authorities have declined to approve the Chinese war movie “The Battle at Lake Changjin” for theatrical release after outrage emerged online that the film promotes Communism, which is banned in the country.
The film’s local distributor Mega Film Distribution said in a statement that it is considering submitting the title again for reconsideration by the Malaysian Film Censorship Board (Lpf), and expressed its regrets that the film which has grossed $890 million so far in China had not been green lit for its Nov. 18 release.
It denied that the film promotes communism, stating, according to local reports, that such accusations were “unfair [to] those who want to watch it.”
“We believe the audience can use this film to trace how the Chinese volunteer army fought in the extreme cold and harsh environment,” it said.

The Fremantle-distributed drama stars Anne-Marie Duff (“His Dark Materials”), Rafe Spall (“Trying”), MyAnna Buring (“The Witcher”) and Jonny Harris (“Jawbone”). It tells the story of the British city of Salisbury, which became the epicentre of one of the country’s biggest political events of the century when former double agent and spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned via a lethal nerve agent called Novichok, which can kill 20,000 people with just half a teaspoon.
Within four days, hundreds of traces were found across the city, and, when things were thought to be under control, a perfume bottle containing the nerve agent was discovered, throwing the investigation into disarray.

Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit) has jumped on board as a producer for an epic new series based on John Milton’s epic 17th-century poem, Paradise Lost. Freeman is currently an executive producer, but according to Variety, he may also have a role in the series.
The series is described as being like a "Biblical Game of Thrones, transporting the reader into an internecine world of political intrigue and incredible violence. At stake? The future of mankind."
The poem concerns the biblical story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton's purpose stated in Book I, is to "justify the ways of God to men".
Series producer Laurence Bowen had this to say in a statement:
“There’s never been a better time for big, original, bold drama series, and Martin and I...

As any fan of HBO’s smash hit series can tell you, the battle for the Iron Throne is nearing its end. Yes, Game of Thrones is gearing up to premiere its penultimate season in July and there’s not long left now until it reaches its conclusion. While spinoffs are being planned, there will probably never be anything quite like David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ tremendous show for a very long time. That doesn’t mean that other projects won’t try to emulate its success though, and already a couple of new series are firing up in hopes of becoming the next big fantasy hit.
One such effort is Paradise Lost, which is being described as a “biblical Game of Thrones.” An adaptation of John Milton’s epic poem “first published in 1667 and detailing the biblical story of the Fall of Man,” Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman is on...

Did you know that Orson Welles wrote a screenplay for Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness in 1939?
Welles not only wanted to to direct, but wanted to star as both Marlow and Kurtz. The screenplay was that bit too much for Rko Studios who shelved the project.
The story of course was used as the basis of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, which shifted the action to the Vietnam War and starred Martin Sheen as Marlow (renamed Willard) and Marlon Brando as Kurtz.
Welles's screenplay has been adapted into a radio play, with the action returning to the original 1890s setting.
It stars James McAvoy as Marlow, who reunites with his Macbeth theatre director Jamie Lloyd on the project.
Unmade Movies: Orson Welles' Heart of Darkness gets its first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on October 24.
The screenplay has been written by Lloyd with producer Laurence Bowen, with music by Ben and Max Ringham.
