There’s a five or six year span somewhere around the late ’80s to early ’90s that has become known as a true Golden Age of sitcoms, and if the last two or three years can be said to have one absolute trend, it’s trying to update and recapture the formula that made those shows into the ratings behemoths they were. Not only are there interesting markers of public appeal like the fact that these Golden Age shows are becoming the staples of Nick-at-Nite and TV Land, but the surprisingly popular original programming on TV Land is clearly leading the way when it comes to this revival.
The bigger networks are adding their own efforts that, though decidedly updated in one way or another, aim to explore the possibilities still open by way of the general sensibilities and frameworks that worked so well for shows of the past.

The blueprint: Assemble familiar character actors into an on-screen family, then nail it to one of the last new series of the television season.
Premiering Wednesday, May 1, the ABC sitcom "Family Tools" revolves around a passing of the torch as a heart attack forces veteran handyman Tony (J.K. Simmons, "The Closer") to turn his business over to his ne'er-do-well son Jack (Kyle Bornheimer, "She's Out of My League"). Though his aunt Terry (Leah Remini, "The King of Queens") offers Jack encouragement, he has much to prove as he sets out to move the family trade forward.
"Family Tools" is based on the British show "White Van Man." Writer-producer Bobby Bowman ("Raising Hope") did the Americanization and defines that title term as a "sort of fix-it guy. The direct translation would be 'jack-of-all-trades'; that's why I named (the central character) Jack. The British version was Ollie. I don't know any Ollies.

Deception
When and Where: Mondays at 10 on NBC, beginning January 7th
What’s the deal: The mysterious death of a childhood friend, who also happens to be a modern-day wealthy socialite, causes Detective Joanna Locasto, played by Californication’s Meagan Good (Think Like a Man, Saw V) to go back undercover as a guest of the family she grew up with, as a servant’s daughter, to find out the truth. The cast for this includes Alias’ Victor Garber, The O.C. and Damages’ Tate Donovan, and Breakout Kings’ Laz Alonso. This series replaces the apocalyptic drama Revolution on NBC’s schedule during the latter’s extended hiatus and is created by Liz Heldens, who wrote for Friday Night Lights as well as the Us version of Prime Suspect.

Exclusive: ABC has cut the order of midseason comedy series Family Tools from 13 to 10 episodes. Sources close to the network say that the decision was made for scheduling reasons as Family Tools in slated to premiere in January and air Tuesdays at 8:30 Pm, bridging the two cycles of Dancing With the Stars. ABC brass estimated they only need the comedy for 10 weeks before Dancing comes back. Family Tools‘ companion in the Tuesday 8 Pm hour will be fellow midseason comedy How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life). The 20th TV series started production early and has already completed its 13-episode order. It is unclear what ABC will do with the 3 extra episodes. Meanwhile, ABC Studios-produced Family Tools started filming later, in part because of a showrunner change in August when veterans Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimiglia were brought in to replace Bobby Bowman, who...

Exclusive: There has been a change at the helm of the upcoming ABC comedy series The Family Tools. Bobby Bowman, who developed the adaptation of the British comedy White Van Man and wrote the pilot, has stepped down as executive producer/showrunner of the series. Veterans Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimiglia (That ’70s Show) have come in as executive producers and new showrunners. I hear the change stems from ABC and ABC Studios’ desire to have someone with showrunner experience steering the series. This is Bowman’s first series as a creator and/or showrunner. He previously worked as a key writer-producer on Greg Garcia’s three comedy series: Yes, Dear, My Name Is Earl and Raising Hope. I hear the network and the studio valued Bowman’s voice on the show and offered him to stay on staff but he chose to step aside and give the new showrunners a clean slate.

Diane Haithman contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. Last August, Leah Remini’s name was in the news as she was ousted from CBS daytime’s The Talk along with Holly Robinson Peete. Now she’s at ABC in the new comedy Family Tools. And at today’s TCA panel on the comedy, she was relentlessly upbeat about the change. “I do believe things happen for a reason, it’s a blessing”, she said. “I started at ABC in 1989 with Living Dolls. My mother said: ‘What part are you playing?’ Yeah”, she cracked. “But it is a blessing to be here, I love being back at ABC, I’d like to stay here and get comfortable”. Remini seems determined to deflect any negatives and called her ouster from the daytime talk program “a learning experience”. After the session, she acknowledged that in hindsight “there were a lot of things I wish I didn’t say,...

ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.
It’s tricky to get a solid feel...

After the high profile and, what Hollywood execs like to call “high concept” shows of last week’s article, this week I will be going through new pilots which follow two trends I like to call “remaking is breaking” and “Desperate Housewives is over and Grey’s Anatomy has got to end sometime”.
Grey’s Anatomy and Desperate Housewives have been big ratings pulls in the coveted demographic (18-49 if you don’t know) for ABC and have meant big advertising bucks. And, even though Grey’s prolific creator Shonda Rhimes, who will be show running three to five shows next season depending on pickups, has claimed that Grey’s will move past eight seasons, there is a general sense that the show is on the decline and, coupled with the loss of Desperate Housewives at the end of the current season, there is a definite hole in the market.

Peter Chernin's company has sold two more projects: multi-camera comedies at CBS.

Fox has "Fallen" for a vigilante drama from "Eagle Eye" co-writer John Glenn.
The project, produced by 20th and the Chernin Co., is described as a real-world drama that revolves around a group of vigilante "fallen" angels who take down the criminal and the corrupt in New York while falling in love, battling demons and seeking their own personal revenge.
Glenn is executive producing with Peter Chernin and Katherine Pope, the Chernin Co.'s TV head.

The most buzzed-about new comedies of the fall, ABC's "Modern Family" and NBC's "Community," are single-camera shows. And all major comedy-series Emmys for the past two years have gone to single-camera shows.
But multicamera comedies are hotter than they have been in years. They dominated early pitch sales in the summer, sparking heated bidding and landing major commitments.
Of the comedy projects with production commitments so far this season, only Greg Garcia's "Keep Hope Alive" at Fox is single-camera. A number of production commitments have gone to multicamera projects, including Mark Brazill's "The Rednecks & Romeos" at Fox, Matt Tarses' "True Love" at CBS and Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith's "18 Years" at ABC, with several more pending.
"Multicamera comedy is absolutely making a comeback this development season," said Glenn Adilman, head of comedy at Sony TV, which is behind a number of high-profile new multicamera projects, including "True Love" and "18 Years.

Fox has teamed with "My Name Is Earl" executive producer Bobby Bowman for a family comedy project.
The untitled show, which has received a premium script commitment, hails from 20th TV -- where Bowman has an overall deal -- and the Chernin Co.
It marks the first sale in what is shaping up to be a busy first year for former News Corp. president and COO Peter Chernin's recently launched company, whose TV division is run by former NBC Universal TV exec Katherine Pope.
Bowman's project, which he wrote and is executive producing, is a multicamera comedy that centers on an oddball kid trying to be normal in an eccentric home.
Fox, which had made finding a new live-action hit comedy a priority, has been stocking up on multicamera projects.
In addition to the Bowman comedy, the network also recently handed a cast-contingent pilot order to "The Rednecks & Romeos,...

My Name Is Earl executive producer Bobby Bowman has inked a new two-year overall deal with series producer 20th Century Fox TV.
Under the seven-figure pact, Bowman will continue on Earl, where he runs the writers' room and manages the show's writing staff, serving as an executive producer alongside creator Greg Garcia and director Marc Buckland. He also will develop new projects for the studio.
Bowman has spent the past eight years at 20th TV, working on Family Guy, Yes, Dear and Earl.
The studio's continuous collaboration with Bowman is "no coincidence," 20th TV chairman Gary Newman said.
"He can do it all -- animation, multicamera, single-camera," he said. "He's as versatile as it gets, and that's particularly important to this studio, which prides itself on being adventurous in our comedy development."
Bowman also joked about his "monogamous relationship with 20th."
"They do exciting shows and have great executives," he said. "Sure, I would prefer it if 20th were monogamous in return, and didn't feel the need to have multiple partners. But they're not going to change."...

Comedy writer-producer Bobby Bowman has inked a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. Under the seven-figure pact, Bowman will develop new half-hour projects for the studio and likely will join an existing 20th TV series. Bowman is no stranger to 20th TV, having worked on two studio comedy series in the past several years -- first on Family Guy and most recently Yes, Dear, on which he rose through the ranks to co-executive producer. The deal with Bowman is one in a slew of overall pacts 20th TV has inked in the past few weeks. It is part of the studio's strategy to "get ahead of the curve" and do "advance planning" ahead of the competitive writer market in June, 20th TV president Dana Walden said.
