Exclusive: Discovery Channel is launching new business format I Quit, with a slew of entrepreneurs risking it by giving up their jobs to follow their passions.
However, the business model behind the show, which launches Tuesday August 18, may be the real point of interest for producers.
The show comes from Shopify Studios, the television production and financing arm of the global online commerce service, and Wheelhouse Entertainment’s Spoke Studios. It was financed and produced by these companies before being picked up by the factual broadcaster, which unusually has just taken U.S. rights rather than full global rights to the format.
I Quit follows six sets of hopeful entrepreneurs as they leave their steady incomes and retirement plans behind, going all in on their dreams of launching their own businesses. Along the way, they will be mentored by three successful business leaders – Harley Finkelstein, COO of Shopify, Debbie Sterling,...

In “Rowe’d Trip,” Rowe and the original “Dirty Jobs” crew will travel together in a mini-rv and reminisce about the good old days — and the grimy gigs he took on in the name of entertainment.

Discovery has given an eight episode order to Revenge Of the Nerd (working title), a an hourlong hidden-camera prank show from Jimmy Kimmel and his Kimmelot banner. Would you challenge a grizzly bear to a game of tug-of-war? Discovery Channel is about to find out who would prevail in its new competition series “Man vs. Bear.”
Here’s how the show works: Each week, three grizzlies named Bart, Honey Bump and Tank will compete against three humans (men and women) in five challenges that test strength, speed and stamina. The bears have the home team advantage, as the competition takes place at the Utah sanctuary where they live, and the challenges play to the bears’ natural instincts and predatory skills. Besides tug-of-war, challenges include rolling giant logs using brute force alone, and other activities bears naturally do in the wild.
In the final round, the top two human competitors will go face-to-face with Bart the grizzly bear, who is 8-and-a-half feet tall and weighs 1,400 pounds. The human with the most points at the end of the episode will be crowned the winner.

Discovery has set a premiere date for “Undercover Billionaire,” a reality show in which real-life billionaire Glenn Stearns adopts an alias and attempts to start a million-dollar company — without using any of his existing wealth or connections.
“With just $100 in his pocket, Glenn will ditch his private jet and yacht and head to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he will assume the alias ‘Glenn Bryant’ — a regular guy who’s spent the last 30 years in corporate America but always dreamed to have a business of his own. To make things fair, he won’t use his real name, contacts or wealth,” Discovery said in a statement. “Along the way, he’ll share practical tips and the knowledge on how to build a fortune from his three decades in business. But in order to succeed, Glenn will need to come up with a million-dollar idea and find a team to help him build it.

Discovery Channel has given the green light to a second season of docuseries Cooper’s Treasure, from Ample Entertainment and Amblin Television, set for premiere this summer.

Cooper created the treasure map in secret over 50 years ago and shared it with his long-time friend Miklos before Cooper’s passing, in hopes his exploration would continue, and ultimately uncover treasures of the old world. If Discovery’s “Deadliest Catch” is in trouble, it’s climate change – not ratings – that may hasten the show’s demise.
Over the last year, temperatures rose about four degrees in the Bering Sea, which is 50 times the global average. As filming began for the 13th season of “Deadliest Catch,” which premieres Tuesday night, the show’s fishermen had to contend with a serious problem: With warming waters, the crabs have moved elsewhere.
“The first thing that you need in order to film a show about crab fishing are the crabs,” said executive producer R. Decker Watson, Jr. “If the crabs don’t show up, then we’re all out of business.”
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game sets an annual quota system on crab fishing, depending on a survey they take in the spring and summer. This past year, they found that half the crab was missing, and...
