Los Angeles (AP) — Michael Jackson's mother should pay more than $800,000 in trial costs to a concert promoter that she targeted in a failed negligent hiring lawsuit involving the death of her son, a judge said Monday. Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos issued the tentative ruling calling on the Jackson family matriarch to pay Aeg Live LLC after it won the case. The five-month trial ended in October with a jury determining that Aeg Live did not negligently hire the doctor convicted of causing Michael Jackson's death in 2009 as he prepared for a comeback tour. The ruling is expected to be finalized after Aeg Live submits an amended list of its costs for items such as court filing fees, court reporters and travel. Attorneys for the company and Katherine Jackson agreed not to argue Palazuelos' tentative ruling, but it might be appealed. Katherine Jackson's attorney Kevin Boyle said...

On the fourth day of deliberations, a Los Angeles jury found Aeg Live wasn't responsible for Michael Jackson’s death. The King of Pop’s family claimed the concert promoter was negligent in hiring the allegedly incompetent Dr. Conrad Murray to pump Jackson full of prescription painkillers, and disregarding the 50-year-old’s health in a pursuit of profits. Aeg Live defense attorney Marvin Putnam said the jury's decision “completely vindicates” his client, while Jackson lawyer Kevin Boyle told reporters the family is "of course not happy" and currently “exploring all options, legally and factually.” Reuters reports that the jury also found Murray – who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2011 for administering the propofol that killed Jackson — “not unfit for his job.” Jury foreman Greg Barden explained, “We felt [Murray] ... was competent to do the job of general practitioner," but added, "Now that doesn't mean that we thought he was ethical,...

Michael Jackson's family is understandably disappointed by what transpired in court today. "We think this was a very important case to bring for a lot of reasons," Kevin Boyle, an attorney for Katherine Jackson, told reporters after a jury determined that Aeg Live was not liable in Jackson's 2009 death of acute propofol intoxication, despite having hired the man who administered the fatal dose, Dr. Conrad Murray. "We think what we've done with this case is proved some things that are important for the Jackson family and for the concert industry and the sports industry with regard to treatment by doctors," Boyle said. "We, of course, are not happy with the result as it stands now, we...

Los Angeles — Michael Jackson could have earned $1.1 billion or more if he had performed a worldwide concert tour and created a Las Vegas show before his death, an accounting expert familiar with the singer's earning potential told jurors Monday.
Arthur Erk, a certified public accountant who conducts royalty audits for musicians, told jurors that Jackson may have earned $1.5 billion for the shows if he had charged higher ticket prices during later shows on the "This Is It" tour.
Erk said he was using conservative estimates to figure Jackson's earning potential if he had lived for several more years, completed a worldwide tour and created a Las Vegas show based on his music. The estimates took into account endorsements and royalties that Jackson could have earned and are heavily dependent on the idea that Jackson would have performed a 37-month, 260-concert world tour.

As Paris Jackson continues to recover from her suicide attempt earlier this week, the inevitable armchair guesswork continues. What would spur her to take such a dark and drastic step? The loss of a father is an obvious blow to any child, and mourning in a white-hot spotlight can't help, especially when you're 15.
If we're going to speculate about stressors in Paris's life -- and we are -- we shouldn't overlook that ongoing wrongful death trial. In 2010, Jackson family matriarch Katherine Jackson sued concert promoter Aeg, insisting the company was negligent in hiring Conrad Murray, the doctor responsible for Michael Jackson's Propofol overdose. Paris and her two brothers are named as co-plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
As part of its defense strategy, Aeg subpoenaed Paris, and about two months ago, she submitted a deposition. Ever since then, the media have speculated that she would appear during the trial.

Telltale Games’ executive producer Kevin Boyle and the studio’s co-founder Kevin Bruner have hinted that the second season of The Walking Dead might allow PlayStation 3 save files to transfer over to the upcoming PlayStation 4.
One of the most disappointing bits of news that Sony confirmed during their PlayStation 4 reveal last month, was that PS3 game saves would not be compatible with the PS4. While this would be little more than an inconvenience for most PS3 games played via the PlayStation Cloud on the next-gen console, it would be a deal breaker for future episodes of The Walking Dead, which are heavily tailored by player choice.
Speaking to IGN at the BAFTA Game Awards, Boyle suggested there might be good news on the question of PS3 game saves, saying:
“Season 2 will read what you did in Season 1 and that will tailor some of the things that happened in Season 2. They...

Los Angeles — A judge has dismissed all but one count in a civil lawsuit by Michael Jackson's mother against concert giant Aeg Live, which hired a doctor who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer's death.
Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos' ruling Thursday means that Katherine Jackson will have a trial on her claim that Aeg negligently hired and supervised former cardiologist Conrad Murray. The ruling dismisses claims that Aeg could be held liable for Murray's conduct and breached its duty to properly care for the pop superstar.
Aeg Live was promoting a series of comeback concerts by Michael Jackson in London titled "This Is It." Jackson died in June 2009 while in final preparations for the shows after Murray administered a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol in the singer's bedroom.
Katherine Jackson's attorney Kevin Boyle was not immediately available for comment but argued at a hearing...

Los Angeles — A jury should decide whether the promoter of Michael Jackson's final concerts negligently hired and supervised the physician convicted of causing the singer's death, a judge tentatively ruled Monday.
If the ruling stands, it will allow the case by Jackson's mother, Katherine, to go forward and present the theory that concert giant Aeg Live controlled the physician who gave the superstar a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol.
Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos' tentative ruling however eliminates some of Katherine Jackson's claims and an attorney for Aeg predicted the company would win at trial.
It is unclear when the ruling will be finalized, or whether the judge will change it. She heard two hours of arguments about the case on Monday but didn't indicate whether her mind had been changed.
Aeg attorney Marvin Putnam said he was pleased with the ruling and reiterated his belief that...

British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has paid tribute to a former protege who was found dead three months after going missing.
Kevin Boyle appeared on the star's 2002 U.K. TV show Jamie's Kitchen, which saw Oliver give 15 unemployed youngsters the chance to work at his Fifteen Restaurant in London.
Boyle disappeared in October and his body was discovered in land near his home in south London last week (ends22Jan12), and Oliver has now spoken of his heartbreak after hearing the terrible news.
In a statement, he says, "I'm deeply saddened by this tragic news. I am proud to have been able to call Kevin a friend for 10 years.
"He was also a constant supporter of Fifteen and all the apprentices and graduates who came after him through the course. I last saw him in September 2011 at the graduation ceremony for the ninth group of apprentices and he was on good form, which makes this news even harder to take. My thoughts are with his family at this incredibly difficult time."
A Scotland Yard spokesman adds, "The death is being treated as unexplained at this stage. A post mortem will be arranged in due course."...
