Ten years ago today, TMZ published an audio recording of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling saying racist things surreptitiously captured by his mistress, V. Stiviano. The recording led to his downfall, and changed the NBA forever.
If you’re not a basketball fan, you might not remember the story. But FX’s limited series “Clipped,” which just got its first trailer today, makes a case for the Donald Sterling saga as a “People v. O.J. Simpson”-style story about race, class, power, and that unique corner of America known as Los Angeles.
Per FX, “Clipped” “charts the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape’s impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league.”
“Clipped” stars Ed O’Neill as Sterling, a man who made his fortune building an L.

HBO had the Lakers, now FX has the Clippers. Will the series’ fates differ (as the real-life teams’ have), or will “Clipped” face the same quick, quiet end as “Winning Time”? We’ll find out this June, when FX’s latest ripped-from-the-headlines adaptation premieres exclusively on Hulu. The trailer was released Thursday, April 25 — just under six weeks prior to the premiere — and now you can watch the first footage below.
Set in 2013, the six-episode limited series stars Ed O’Neill as L.A. Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling and Laurence Fishburne as the team’s head coach, Doc Rivers. Formerly with the Boston Celtics (who won an NBA title in 2008), Rivers had just joined the Clippers when the owner’s racist comments went public, sending the organization into a tailspin and Sterling into a power struggle with Rivers, players, and the NBA at large. Peacock is hoping to drive some eyeballs to Pearson, the short-lived Suits spin-off, after the latter became a surprising hit on Netflix this summer.
The NBCUniversal streamer has added the show, which starred Gina Torres, to its service today. It is hoping that new Suits fans may discover the spinoff as well, which is not available on Netflix.
Pearson ran for one season on the cable network in 2019 but was canceled a month and a half after its season ended.
Toplined by mothership series alumna Torres, Pearson centered on her character, powerhouse lawyer Jessica Pearson, as she enters the dirty world of Chicago politics. It also stars Bethany Joy Lenz, Morgan Spector, Chantel Riley, Simon Kassianides, Eli Goree and Isabel Arraiza.
Pearson originated on Suits, whose Season 7 finale served as a backdoor pilot for the spinoff.

Review: Television series have long explored the worlds of serial killers and psychotherapy. Usually, killers are fodder for police procedurals and thriller series but every now and then there is a unique take on the subject that upends convention. From Dexter to Mindhunter to Hannibal, serial killers have often been portrayed as monsters or deviant human beings that the masses struggle to comprehend. The new limited series The Patient tries an angle of the expected serial killer story that somewhat succeeds thanks to the writing of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. Echoing the dramatic intensity of their riveting espionage series The Americans, The Patient is an unexpected twist on a familiar genre.

Echoing the dramatic intensity of their riveting espionage series The Americans, The Patient is an unexpected twist on a familiar genre.

While most showrunners are content to use Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” for soundtrack shorthand, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg prefer slightly deeper cuts from the Canadian singer-spiritualist.
The duo potently utilized “Who By Fire,” with its ties to the Hebrew “Unetaneh Tokef” prayer, at the climax of the fourth season of The Americans. They return to Cohen again with a song that I won’t spoil featured pivotally in their new FX limited series The Patient, which will air exclusively on Hulu.
It’s easy to see why Fields and Weisberg respond to Cohen (or why their music supervisor thinks their shows and Cohen’s songs are a good match). Like Cohen, Fields and Weisberg are engaged in their own blending of the profane and the sacred, using the trappings of pulpy genres as a delivery mechanism for richer, more haunted storytelling that...

Domhnall Gleeson channels Hannibal Lecter in the first trailer for “The Patient,” the upcoming FX limited series co-starring Steve Carell.
Created by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who previously worked together on the acclaimed FX drama “The Americans,” “The Patient” focuses on the relationship between Alexander Strauss (Carell), a well-regarded psychotherapist, and his new patient Sam Fortner (Gleeson). When Sam takes Strauss hostage, he reveals himself to be a serial killer, and asks the doctor to cure him of his murderous tendencies. As Strauss reluctantly begins treatment, the experience unearths demons and traumas of his own, blurring the line between the patient and therapist. The trailer begins with a normal therapy session between the two before fast-forwarding to the hostage situation, with Strauss trapped via chain in Sam’s house.
“Successful therapy requires a safe environment, without anything like fear hanging over every session,” Carell says in the trailer.

There are a whopping 237 submissions for Best Drama Directing on the 2022 Emmys ballot, which will yield seven nominees. As a reminder, last year’s winner was “The Crown” (“War” by Jessica Hobbs) and the other nominees were “Bridgerton” (“Diamond of the First Water” by Julie Anne Robinson), “The Crown” (“Fairytale” by Benjamin Caron), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (“The Wilderness” by Liz Garbus), “The Mandalorian” (“Chapter 9: The Jedi” by Jon Favreau) and “Pose” (“Series Finale” by Steven Canals).
The only eligible returnee out of this bunch is “Bridgerton,” which entered three episodes of its second season for consideration. It may have a harder time getting back in as “Ozark” and “Succession” will be back to reclaim their crowns, having prevailed in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Winner Jason Bateman is back on the ballot for the “Ozark” series finale, after being absent for the third season, and joining him will be his co-star Laura Linney for her directorial debut,...

HBO is juggling multiple television shows for a shot at the Primetime Emmy Awards, which could make them a dominating force in all categories, particularly for directing and writing.
Just wrapping its season finale, “Barry” is expected to match, if not exceed, its previous 18 nomination haul last time. Actor and producer Bill Hader will be among the “locks” for outstanding comedy series and lead actor (comedy). Still, with two previous Emmy noms for directing, he’ll be in the running again with the episode “710N,” the sixth episode that finds the titular hitman attacked by Traci’s gang. Three “Barry” episodes will also vie for attention in the writing categories: “710N” (by Duffy Boudreau), “candy asses” (by Liz Sarnoff) and the finale “starting now” (by Hader and Alec Berg).

This weekend is a big one for Oscar watchers, with two awards ceremonies that often predict key categories. Sunday marks the biggest night of the year in British film, with the BAFTAs, whose winners often mirror those of the Oscars, taking place. But first, the biggest names in directing came out for the Directors Guild of America Awards. Judd Apatow returned to host the DGAs, which honor outstanding achievement in directing film, television, and commercials.
The feature film nominees at the DGAs were almost identical to the Best Director nominees at the Oscars, with winner Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) competing against Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”), Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”), and Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”. The only difference is that the DGAs swapped in Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (“Drive My Car”).

The Directors Guild of America’s 74th annual DGA Awards are under way at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, with Judd Apatow on tap as host. The ceremony returns to an in-person event this year, having gone virtual in 2021, and is part of a busy weekend on the kudos gauntlet that also includes the BAFTA, Annie Awards and Critics Choice events.
This year in the motion pictures category, the group nominated Kenneth Branagh for “Belfast” (Focus Features), Jane Campion for “The Power of the Dog” (Netflix), Paul Thomas Anderson for “Licorice Pizza” (MGM/United Artists Releasing), Steven Spielberg for “West Side Story” (20th Century Studios) and Denis Villeneuve for “Dune” (Warner Bros).
Campion has already made history as the second woman ever to receive a second nod from the Directors Guild (following “The Piano” in 1993).

Jane Campion has been named the best feature-film director of 2021 by the Directors Guild of America for “The Power of the Dog.” She is the second consecutive female director to win after Chloe Zhao’s victory last year for “Nomadland,” and the third overall after Zhao and Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”), who won in 2010 and was also on hand for the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“I’m here because I care about women having voices,” Campion said in her acceptance speech. She had been the prohibitive favorite going into the DGA Awards, just as she is in the Best Director category at the Academy Awards — and the fact that she won even at the end of a marathon DGA ceremony during which one person after another had paid homage to her fellow nominee Steven Spielberg suggests that the rest of awards season will be smooth sailing for her.

The all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the Best Director Oscar. The world as they know it might be crumbling for Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman Roy (Kieran Culkin), but everything’s coming up roses for “Succession.” The HBO drama about a dysfunctional New York media family made history in January when it became the first drama series to sweep the Directors Guild of America Award nominations. After any awards body announces its nominations, the question at hand immediately becomes, “What’s the big takeaway here? What insight have we gleaned from this information, be it about a larger awards race or the vibe of the industry in general?” That’s the case, at least, if awards analysis is your job. Often, it’s difficult to differentiate wheat from chaff. But that’s not the case for this year’s Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award TV nominations. Not in the slightest.

The Directors Guild of America announced the television, commercial and documentary nominees for the 2022 DGA Awards and one film dominated the Dramatic Series category. The other categories were thankfully more varied (sort of).

Winners of the 74th annual DGA Awards will be rewarded on March 12, 2022 in a ceremony that also honors motion pictures (those noms will be announced on Jan. 27). Read on for the complete list of 2022 Directors Guild Awards nominations for TV, which includes a nice mix of freshman series (like “Hacks” and “The White Lotus”) and established fare (like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso”).
SEEReminder: Here’s who won last year’s DGA Awards
This year’s drama series line-up is filled out by a single show: “Succession.” That’s right, the HBO family drama earned all five spots in the category, an historic first for the guild. As for the comedy series nominees, Apple’s “Ted Lasso” earned three spots while HBO Max’s “Hacks” and HBO’s “The White Lotus” scored one apiece.

It’ll be a case of Succession-on-Succession violence at the 74th annual DGA Awards. The Directors Guild revealed its TV nominations Wednesday, and all five nominees for Dramatic Series are episodes of HBO’s juggernaut starring Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox.
On the Comedy Series side, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso is a triple nominee alongside HBO Max’s Hacks and HBO’s The White Lotus.
Today’s nominations for the DGA Awards, which will be handed out March 12, also cover documentaries and commercials. See the full list below. The guild’s film nominations will be revealed Thursday.
The Movies for Television and Limited Series categories is chock-full of big names: Barry Jenkins for Amazon’s The Underground Railroad, Barry Levinson and Danny Strong for separate episodes of Hulu’s Dopesick, Hiro Murai for HBO Max’s Station Eleven and Craig Zobel for HBO’s Mare of Easttown.

Call it now: “Succession” will win the DGA Award this year for drama. That’s because it’s the only nominee this year for drama: Five episodes of the series’ third season filled all five nominated slots for this year’s DGA Awards category for dramatic series.
The “Sucession” sweep comes as the Directors Guild of America has revealed this year’s TV nominees for its 74rd annual DGA Awards, including achievement in drama, comedy, limited/TV movie, variety, reality, children’s and commercials. Also announced on Wednesday were the nominees for this year’s directorial achievement in documentaries.
On the comedy side, “Ted Lasso” led with three of the five DGA Awards nominations in the category, along with episodes of “Hacks” and “The White Lotus” (which somehow landed in the comedy field there).
Last year, top TV prizes went to “Homeland” for drama series and “The Flight Attendant” for comedy series,...

The Directors Guild of America has announced its nominations in its television categories, with “Succession” sweeping the drama-series category by landing all five nominations for different episodes.
The last time a single series swept all the nominations in the category was 1983, when “Hill Street Blues” took every slot in a category that at the time only consisted of three nominations. No program, drama or comedy, has ever swept all five nominations in a DGA Awards series category.
In the comedy series category, “Ted Lasso” took three of the five slots, with “Hacks” and “The White Lotus” taking the remaining two.
In the category devoted for TV movies and limited series, the nominees were Barry Jenkins for “The Underground Railroad,” Barry Levinson and Danny Strong for separate episodes of “Dopesick,” Hiro Murai for “Station Eleven” and Craig Zobel for “Mare of Easttown.”

Domhnall Gleeson will star opposite Steve Carell in the upcoming FX limited series “The Patient.”
In addition, Linda Emond, Laura Niemi, and Andrew Leeds have also joined the show’s cast. Chris Long has come onboard as executive producer and will also direct the first two episodes. Kevin Bray and Gwyneth Horder-Payton will also direct episodes of the 10-episode series.
In the half-hour series, a psychotherapist (Carell) finds himself held prisoner by a serial killer (Gleeson) with an unusual request: curb his homicidal urges. But unwinding the mind of this man while also dealing with the waves of his own repressed troubles creates a journey perhaps as treacherous as his captivity.
“The Patient” was originally ordered to series at FX in October. Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg will write and executive produce the series, with Carell executive producing in addition to starring. Caroline Moore and Victor Hsu will also executive produce along with Long.

A review of this week’s Succession, “Retired Janitors of Idaho,” coming up just as soon as I let the rabbit eat a bagel…
Succession is a comedy.
Yes, it submits as a drama at every awards show, and has done quite well with that strategy. But some of that is about eligibility rules and some of it is about strategy (the Emmy drama categories have become much easier in recent years as the industry’s focus has shifted to miniseries), in a kind of gaming of the system that...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Succession” Season 3, Episode 5, “Retired Janitors of Idaho.”]
What do the Roys have against janitors? A few episodes back, when Greg (Nicholas Braun) thought he was picking out a gift from Kendall (Jeremy Strong), the watch salesman told his prospective client, “Your phone is a widget — every janitor in America has one.” Long before that demeaning reference, Roman (Kieran Culkin) tortured a janitor and his family, dangling a check for $1 million if his young son could hit a home run during a “fun” family softball game. Then this week, everyone’s favorite Slime Puppy bemoaned entrusting a leadership vote to the company’s shareholders, aka “the retired janitors of Idaho.”
From the beginning, “Succession” has painted the Roys as out of touch, but Jesse Armstrong’s ruthless family portrait always goes beyond that rather obvious (if necessary) reminder, to illustrate how their bubbled lives create havoc and suffering for anyone outside.
