American-born silent star of the British screen, originally trained as a dancer. Touted as being of Canadian birth for publicity reasons, she was most acclaimed for her titular role in
Mademoiselle from Armentieres (1927). Her other British hits included
Fanny Hawthorne (1927) and
Kitty (1929). Homesick, and determined to make a success back home in the U.S., she made an ill-advised stab at Hollywood, but finding opportunities scarce. She re-emerged as a character actress during the late 1940's, and in 1969 retired to live out the rest of her life on the island of Malta, where she died in June 1995 at the age of 95.
