Today being international jazz day, there will be much celebrating of the greatness of its history. I’ve done that in the past; it is a great history. But it is not all back in historical times; jazz lives, and evolves, and continues to be great. Yet how many lists of the greatest jazz albums include anything from the current century?
That they do not is no indictment of them; only sixteen percent of the years when recorded jazz has existed (not counting the present year yet) are in the twenty-first century, after all, and some prefer to bestow the label of greatness after more perspective has been achieved than sixteen (or fewer, for newer releases) years.
Nonetheless, if people are to respect jazz as a living art form, a look back at the best of its more recent releases seems worthwhile. Here’s one man’s “baker’s dozen...

Broadway’s most exhilarating rock concert burst onto the boards earlier this year when Neil Patrick Harris stepped into the silky fishnets of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, earning a Tony for the role and ushering the East German rocker into the hands of a new generation of fans. After Harris departed the show in August, The Book of Mormon veteran Andrew Rannells was tapped to fill Hedwig’s high heels. To say his turn is electric, heartbreaking, and wholly different from Harris’ would still be underselling the performance.

A Clamour of Cabaret: A Volume of Vaudeville Varietals Dysfunctional Theatre Company Under St. Marks, 94 St. Marks Place Through August 16
The Dysfunctional Theatre Company's mission statement explains that the group considers the underperformed plays and twisted classics, which they present to be dysfunctional to show that "dysfunction isn’t a product of 21st or even 20th century life [but] a product of the human condition." A Clamour of Cabaret, hosted by bottle-wielding and genially bickering hosts F. Scott Fitzgerald (Rob Brown) and Edna St. Vincent Millay (Jennifer Gill), demonstrates the dysfunction within the narratives and other characteristic bits that leap to the nostalgic mind at the mention of "vaudeville" and "cabaret" performances, but it does so delightfully.
As characters struggle for control over the production -- the late arrival of Fitzgerald and Millay leads La Diva Chiara Tarabotti (Nicole Lee Aiossa, a dominant comic presence whenever she is on stage) to...

Will Neil Patrick Harris claim his first Tony Award this Sunday for his gender-bending turn in the musical revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Probably. Will fellow multiple-Emmy winner Bryan Cranston win for playing Lyndon B. Johnson in the biodrama All the Way? Count on it. But will it be the Carole King biomusical Beautiful or the murderously funny A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder that earns top honors as the Best New Musical of the Broadway season?
On that point, as on many other tight races in this year’s Tony contest, EW critics Melissa Rose Bernardo and Thom Geier are divided.

With the exception of a pair of Fox Searchlight titles (The East and Stoker), Warner Bros.’ Before Midnight and 6 hour mini-series from Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Premieres program is chock-full of acquisition friendly titles. Fourteen in all, the selection includes several returning filmmakers in Drake Doremus, David Gordon Green, Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman and Michael Winterbottom and Joseph Gordon-Levitt — all filmmakers that I accurately predicted would return with product and when we find cast names/star wattage we usually find quality – not surprisingly, four Blacklist listed projects The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (’07), A.C.O.D. (’08), Stoker (’10), The Way, Way Back (’10) (joining the previously announced Toy’s House and Spectacular Now) are among the announcements. And final note: the chances of bumping into either actors Dermont Mulroney or James Franco at a Park City party have now increased: Franco who brings his experimental directed film Interior. Leather Bar....

Sundance Film Festival 2013 is becoming more and more promising seemingly with each passing day.
Last week, we heard the brilliant first line-up, which included the likes of Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Kill Your Darlings, The Spectacular Now, Touchy Feely, and Crystal Fairy.
Then came the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier line-ups, which included Sightseers’ Us premiere, S-vhs, and We Are What We Are.
And tonight the festival has announced its line-ups in the Premieres and Documentary Premieres category, and they are somewhat amazing.
Topping the list is Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature directorial debut, Don Jon’s Addiction, which is all but guaranteed to be one of the best films of next year.
Also heading to Utah will be Zal Batmanglij’s The East, starring Ellen Page, Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgård, and Toby Kebbell, seeing the director re-team with Marling once more following the success of Sound of My Voice.

If you’ve been on the internet the past 12 hours, then you know that the prologue for Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises was screened for select press last night. Everyone else can see it in very select IMAX theaters next week with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, but Nolan & co. attended the screening last night and we have one major detail to report. You can look for brief write-ups of the actual footage around the web, but I’d personally want to wait to see it myself, so we won’t be sharing that.
EW.com talked to Nolan, who said they he never planned to shoot the film entirely in the IMAX format due to logistics, but he did have excellent news when it comes to how much footage we’ll actually see in the breathtaking format. Check out his quote below.
We shot about twice what we did last time [on The Dark Knight], at least.
