From the first time I saw it until this moment, two days before what might just be the most important, potentially resonant (for good and ill) American presidential election since the days of the Civil War, no other movie has expanded in my view more meaningfully, more ambiguously, with more fascination than has Robert Altman’s Nashville. We often hear of movies which “transcend” their genres, or their initial ambitions or intentions, and often built into that alleged transcendence is a condescension to said genre, or those ambitions or intentions, as if the roots were somehow corrupt or unworthy, in need of reconstruction. If the form of Nashville transcends anything, it’s the shape and scope of the multi-character drama as we’d come to know it in 1975, which was dominated at the time by disaster movies and their jam-packed casts filled with old Hollywood veterans and Oscar winners. But...

The formative years of Britain’s most notorious gangsters are portrayed with brutal honesty in Rise Of The Krays, released on Blu-ray and DVD on August 31, 2015, courtesy of Signature Entertainment. In 1961 Ronnie and Reggie Kray began a reign of terror that would endure and define London’s East End right up until today.
The Kray ‘Firm’ consisted of ‘Colonel’ Ronnie Kray, his twin brother Reggie Kray, Ronnie Hart their cousin, Albert Donoghue, Ian Barrie, Pat Connolly, Big Tommy Brown, known as the Bear, Billy Donovan, Connie Whitehead, Sammy Lederman, Dave Simmonds, Nobby Clark, Scotch Jack Dickson, John Barry, Tony and Chris Lambrianou and Ronnie Bender.
The Firm worked on an information basis. The Krays would always help small time criminals who had just been released from prison or when they were down on their luck in return for favours in the future. From protection rackets to members clubs, from brutal...

Shatner, Nimoy, Dunaway, Johnny Cash and more. We take a look at some of TV detective show Columbo’s killer cameos...
Schlubby working class hero, Crime And Punishment’s Porfiry Petrovich for primetime, fatherly fighter of crime... I was introduced to the rumple-coated and rumple-faced one back in 1987, following an off-hand attempt from my mother to get five-year-old me to sit down and shut up for a few minutes. Desperately looking for something to grab my attention, and zeroing in on what ITV happened to be repeating that Sunday, her “Oh, look! Columbo! You like him, don’t you?” – “Huh?” – “He’s the one with the cigar and coat, you know him!” got me to sit down, be quiet, and puzzle over whether or not I did like him. She turned out to be right – I liked him a lot.

A film version of Flashman is in the works at 20th Century Fox.
The Victorian character was created for Tom Brown's Schooldays, before author George MacDonald Fraser continued the adventures of the bully as Sir Harry Flashman - a cowardly soldier.
Variety reports that the studio is in the process of developing the feature with Ridley Scott's Scott Free and Peter Chernin's Chernin Entertainment.
The book series ran as 11 novels and one short story collection between 1969 and 2005.
Fraser himself was also a script writer, working on screenplays for The Three Musketeers, Octopussy and Red Sonja.
Flashman was previously seen on screen played by Malcolm McDowell in Royal Flash.

Despite the admittedly disturbing topic this week, I really enjoyed Criminal Minds. Teri Polo did a fantastic job portraying a woman obsessed with "Teacher Love." She pretty much nailed the psycho thing. Even though, as we say nearly every week, we knew who the UnSub was straight away, there was still something interesting about watching the action unfold. Or maybe it's just our own morbid fascination with watching a train derail, who knows...
In "I Love You, Tommy Brown," the theme of teachers sleeping with their students - which splashes the headlines fairly often - came to the forefront. Even though most of us can't fathom ever entertaining such a setup, the writers did a solid job of explaining the maternal issues and Teacher Love syndrome that drove our villain to act so erratically.
But even though that part of the episode was explained, the thing that I found slightly...

Tonight on Criminal Minds: Are Those Wedding Bells We Hear?
There is a theme of marriage and family on tonight's Criminal Minds in both a professional and personal capacity. We also have a big spoiler relating to the season finale and the fate of Emily Prentiss (Paget Brewster) as we unfortunately know that she will be leaving the Bau team at the end of this year.
The team heads to Seattle tonight to investigate the murders of married couples, who all happen to be foster parents to young children. Teri Polo (Meet the Parents) is playing Maggie Hallman; a former teacher who has both maternal and murderous instincts and it is clear that she is targeting these couples because of the children involved. The promo below shows that it is the children that are what is important to this woman as she says "You're so lucky. A child's the...

If you are a fan of film you no doubt have heard of a little company with an expansive movie collection, whose sole purpose is to present films as they were meant by the director/film-makers. Not to mention an outpouring of special features that would satisfy any film fan, like behind-the-scenes, short films, essays from film critics, deleted segments and commentaries.
As has been reported on this very website several times before, there is the classic film Black Orpheus which, as it turns out, in its initial release, was a bare bones disc, but now is featured in a beautiful Blu-Ray transfer, with loads of extras, which sparked a thought.
But in hindsight, it’s the beginning of the year and for the past 5+ years or so, since I stumbled upon the pricey expensive discs, I started to realize a bit of a trend. Much of their work was a bit obtuse in vulgarity,...
