This year’s Zurich Summit kicked off with a bang as a host of top industry execs gathered on stage to discuss one of the most challenging topics facing the independent film world today – how to finance an independent film in the streaming age?
The panel inevitably was drawn to the pros and cons of going down the streaming route.
Former Lionsgate film chief Patrick Wachsberger, who recently was a producer on Oscar-winning hit Coda, spoke at length about the challenges he faced when financing the project. The Pathé title was a project he helped develop at Lionsgate and took with him when he left the US studio. The film had pre-sold to a number of international territories but famously caused a stir when Apple came in and acquired the film at Sundance for 25M in a worldwide deal, causing the streamer to make buyback deals with those rights holders.

Let the Right One In started out as a vampire novel written by John Ajvide Lindqvist. This was a very different, unique, brilliant take on vampire lore, and the story has already been adapted twice as films. The first one was a wonderful Swedish film that came out in 2008, and the other was an Americanized take on the story called Let Me In, which was released in 2010.
About a year ago it was reported that A&E was developing the story into a TV series, but there hasn't been much news on the project since it was announced. Today we learned that TNT is in the process of developing a pilot for a potential series.
The original story is set in Sweden, and the U.S. film was set in New Mexico. This latest version will take place in Vermont, and this is the synopsis from the press release:

You may recall a time when we brought you news that Tomorrow Studios, undeterred by Matt Reeves’ own Hollywood remake, had snapped up rights to Let The Right One In, John Ajvide Lindqvist’s beloved horror romance novel.
That was almost a full year ago at this stage, but Deadline brings word that the small-screen project has now exploded into life, landing a pilot order at TNT. Criminal Minds and Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis remains attached at the helm of this new take, one that is aiming to tap into the core tents of Lindqvist’s acclaimed vampire love story. First published ten years ago, it’s a novel that is held in high regard for its ability to “combine elements of horror, revenge thriller and adolescent romance into an unforgettable and truly unsettling tale.”
Lindqvist later adapted Let The Right One In for Tomas Alfredson’s Swedish movie of the same name,...

Even as the first domestic deals begin to trickle out here, the European Film Market kicked off today in Berlin against a uniquely challenging economic and geopolitical backdrop. Currencies are in flux, but the first international market of the year could also be an opportunity for European studios to flex some muscle — if they can afford it.
Peppering the bumpy landscape here are the strong dollar, stuttering euro, record-low oil prices — and their impact on economies like Russia — fears over security in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris and, if that wasn’t enough, the possibility of Greek default and exit from the euro. The currency issues will impact buying, but international and domestic indie distributors need product to fill their 2016 slates giving this market potential. Plus, Harvey is already making headlines.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is in negotiations for drug thriller Snitch rewritten and directed by Ric Roman Waugh.
New Line has been developing this project for years (since 2006) based on the script by Justin Haythe, which follows a suburban dad who goes undercover to convict a drug dealer aiming to reduce his teenage son’s 30-year prison sentence. In the real version (Frontline documentary) of the story, 18-year-old Joey Settembrino was sentenced to ten years for which he was clearly not ready. He told his father,
I’m here, get me out, I’ll never be able to do 10 years.”
Nigel Sinclair, Guy East and Alex Brunner are producing and David Fanning and Gordon Gray are co-producing. The film is in the groove with Exclusive media.

Hollywoodnews.com: What would happen if you ran into a man who looked exactly like your late husband? Would you be attracted to this stranger? Could you possibly fall in love?
These are the burning questions that will fuel Arie Posin’s “The Look of Love,” which will star Diane Keaton as the widow and Ed Harris as the man bearing a striking resemblance to Keaton’s character’s deceased spouse.
Exclusive Films recently announced that the company has acquired all international sales rights to Posin’s romantic comedy drama (according to ComingSoon), and will distribute it later this year. Posin, who directed 2005’s “The Chumscrubber” with Jamie Bell and Glenn Close), will write and direct “Love.”

Debra Granik's Winter's Bone went two for four at the 2010 Gotham awards claiming Best Ensemble and the coveted, top prize of Best Feature beating out the much-liked other Sundance titles in Blue Valentine and The Kids Are All Right and Tiff titles Black Swan and Let Me In. I think many indie film insider would agree that this was Winter's Bone award to lose, and with tomorrow's Indie Spirit nominations unveiling (where we should expect more mentions) 2010 will have been quite the comeback year for Debra Granik, whose debut film Down to the Bone would critically do well but pretty much disappeared from the map straight-after. I’ve put up a lot on Let Me In already, but now that some good notes are coming back from Toronto, I have six more clips to share. Speaking of Toronto, I confusingly heard someone say it was, “too true to the original,” whatever that might mean. I suppose it could indicate the lack of necessity in creating something that was too close to the material it’s working from, but it struck me as odd.
At any rate, I’ve be hearing good press from those who have managed to take it in, and if you’ve seen the original, this is surely something that is on the top of the list of things to look forward to.
I’ve put the clips together into a playlist, along with the trailer and an earlier clip I had, so take them in and enjoy. And, let me know what you think.
